Prayer of Thanks
O loving God, we give you thanks for this autumn season.
We accept with joy the gifts of this year’s harvest.
We praise you for sunshine, for rain, for cold winds, for all that these days hold.
As Earth now begins its season of waiting, we too wait upon your ever ‐ faithful care for us.
We pray for ourselves and for all people in our world in need.
Amen.
Virtue of the Month: Empathy
During the month of October we will focus on the virtue to empathy.
God has given us the ability to form connections with each other – to live together.
Empathy helps us to connect and live together in safe, caring, inclusive communities.
We understand empathy to mean the ability to identify with and feel other people’s concerns.
We believe that in a faith community we are nothing without relationships.
An empathetic person believes that we all share one Spirit; that we are many parts of one body because we are all created in the image and likeness of God.
An empathetic person …
Listens attentively
Watches people’s body language
Notices and respond when someone is upset
Can name her/his feelings
Can see a situation from another person’s point of view
Knows that different people may feel differently about the same thing

As is tradition at Cardinal Newman School, we once again will hold our annual Thanksgiving Food Drive.
As a school community, we will collect non ‐ perishable food items to help those who are in need from our own local community.
Non ‐ perishable items can be placed in boxes in the front entrance of the school.
WORLD’S FINEST CHOCOLATE FUNDRAISER
Our annual fundraising campaign will run from October 2 nd to October 20 th .
The “Kick Off” assembly will be on Thursday, October 2 nd .
Students participating in this fundraising initiative will bring a box of chocolates on Thursday, October 2 nd .
ATTENDANCE VERIFICATION
Important Information for your child’s safety
Daily attendance and punctuality are very important.
On the days that your child will be absent, we ask that you please contact the school.
The number is 905 ‐ 792 ‐ 2268, press ‘1’ for the attendance voice mail.
It is the parent’s responsibility to call the school in the event of an absence.
The school is responsible for attendance verification, not an attendance check.
This is a safety precaution.
Please provide your child’s name, grade, teacher and reason for the absence.
Thank you for your support in keeping our children safe.
PROGRESS REPORTS
As per Ministry of Education guidelines, students in Grades 1 ‐ 8 will receive progress reports on November 11 th , 2014.
Interviews for
students requiring them, will take place on November 13, 2014.
STUDENT’S EMERGENCY INFORMATION
Your child will receive a copy of the Student Verification form which contains your address, phone numbers, emergency contacts and health information as it currently exists in our computer.
We ask that you take a few minutes and look over the information to ensure that it is accurate.
Please make any changes needed directly onto the sheet and return it to your child’s teacher as soon as possible .
It is very important that we have accurate phone numbers and emergency contacts.
Additionally, please consider including your email address (at the bottom of the form) in order that we can send you newsletters and other information in a timely and environmentally manner.
MEDICAL CONCERNS
We have a number of students in the school with health conditions requiring specialized medication or supervision.
In order for
students to have access to medicine on a daily basis or for us to store medication in the school, your doctor MUST complete the required form.
All medication of this sort is to be stored in the school office.
We take this precaution so that medication does not fall into the wrong hands.
If your child has a medical condition, please notify the school office.
LUNCH HOUR
During the lunch hour, all students who stay for lunch are expected to remain at school, and all students who go home for lunch are expected to go home for lunch.
If there is a change in the regular lunch hour procedure for your child, parents/guardians are asked to provide the teacher with a note explaining the change.
Student safety is essential at
Cardinal Newman School.
For this reason, students staying for lunch at school will not be permitted to go to the local plaza.
We would like to remind you that the school is not equipped to provide lunches to students who are sent to school without a lunch.
Please ensure that your child has a suitable lunch, every day.
If you plan to deliver your child’s lunch to the school, please ensure
that it is delivered before 12:15pm and is left on the table outside the main office.
NUT/PEANUT/OTHER ALLERGY ALERT
If your child has a severe allergic reaction to peanuts, peanut byproducts, bee/wasp stings etc., please let the school know as soon as possible.
It is essential that the information you provide is accurate, and up to date.
There are various forms which need to be completed by you and your family doctor if it is necessary to store an Epi ‐ pen at school.
There are some students in our school with a severe, life threatening allergy to peanuts and nuts.
This is a medical condition that causes severe reaction to certain allergens that can result in death within minutes.
Although this may or may not affect your child’s class directly, we require your continued cooperation in sending foods to school with your child that are free from peanuts, nuts or their byproducts, and nut substitute products .
We cannot guarantee that any classroom is nut free, but we are attempting to minimize exposure and keep everyone as safe and healthy as possible.
We appreciate your help and support in this important issue.
We ask you to please refrain from sending birthday and special occasion edible treats into your child’s class.
Instead, perhaps you could recognize a special event by sending in a non ‐ edible treat e.g., pencils, stickers, notebooks .
LUNCHES BROUGHT TO THE OFFICE
Please consider having your children bring their lunches with them in the morning as the new safe schools access protocol may cause delays in your child receiving lunch.
If you are bringing a lunch for your child to pick up from the office, please ensure that it is labelled with your child’s name, teacher’s name and room number.
Please instruct your child to come to the front lobby and pick it up from the lunch table.
In keeping your child’s safety at heart, students will not be permitted to go out of the building to get their lunches.
In order to avoid interruptions to instructional time, students will not be called from class.
PIZZA AND SUB DAYS
Pizza Days continue this month on Tuesdays.
All pizza orders are taken ahead of time so that the proper amount of pizza is ordered.
There will be no orders taken after the final classroom collection .
Cost for pizza is $2.00.
All profits from pizza days go to support school initiatives (classroom student libraries, buses for sports events, fees for tournaments, replace outdoor recess equipment, etc.)
Mr.
Sub will be supplying our subs again this year.
Our first sub day will be Thursday, October 16th.
We will have sub day on the 3rd
Thursday of the month.
Order forms will be sent home.
PAPERLESS SNACKS/LUNCHES
Students and staff are encouraged to be environmentally friendly by reducing the amount of paper and plastic waste from lunches and snacks.
Last year we received GOLD level standing ECO school certification.
Snacks will not be
permitted in the playground .
Wasps, bees and birds continue to be a problem in the schoolyard.
As a result, students will have an opportunity to eat snacks before or after recess.
BREAKFAST CLUB
The Cardinal Newman C.E.S.
Breakfast Club will be running again this year.
More details to follow as these become available.
EQAO ASSESSMENTS 2013/2014
Last spring, the Primary and Junior Division Assessments of Reading, Writing and Mathematics were administered at all publicly funded elementary schools in Ontario by the Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO).
The primary assessments are written by children in grade 3 and the junior assessments are written by children in grade 6.
These assessments are conducted by EQAO and provide an indication of each student’s achievement of the knowledge and skills at key points in their primary and junior education.
Detailed results of student achievement on 2013 ‐ 2014 EQAO can be viewed at www.eqao.com
.
We are very proud of our students and of our teachers who have worked very diligently.
The following percentages represent students at or above the provincial
standard: Grade 3 Reading 67%, Writing 78% and Mathematics 59%.
Grade 6 Reading 67%, Writing 64% and Mathematics 34%.
Our
EQAO results show growth in 5 out of 6 areas.
Grade 3 Reading up 1%, Writing up 1%, Mathematics down 1%.
Grade 6 Reading up
16%, Writing up 5%, Mathematics up 16%.

BEFORE SCHOOL SUPERVISION
For your child’s safety, we request that students not be on school property until supervision begins at 9:00 a.m.
Last year, many students were left at school in the morning before school supervision begins and remained at school long after school dismissal times.
This is unsafe and leaves children vulnerable.
Please make sure that you make the necessary arrangements for your children before and after school.
Parents will be contacted if children are left unattended before or after school.
If you need information about local
babysitting facilities or our Before and After School Program, please contact the school office.
BEFORE AND AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM
PLASP operates Before and After School Programs at this school in Room 28 .
This is a change in location from last year.
Those involved in this program must use the regular entrance doors for access to this program.
Use of the classroom’s side door into the parking lot is prohibited for reasons of safety.
The Before School Program runs from
7:30 a.m.
until school begins.
The After School Program runs from the end of the school day until 6:00 p.m.
Fee assistance is available.
Register your child with the PLASP Staff before or after school.
For further information, call 905 ‐ 890 ‐ 1711
or visit the website at www.plasp.com
VISITORS AT THE SCHOOL & SAFE SCHOOLS ACCESS
All visitors and parents are requested to enter the building through the front door and check in at the office.
Please sign in, and obtain a pass if you plan to remain in the building for any reason during school hours or in the playground while the children are outside.
Please understand that during instructional time, teachers are not available to meet
with you or to take phone calls.
All messages or deliveries for students will be handled through the front office.
KISS AND RIDE
The school’s Kiss and Ride Program is located at the front of the building.
The “Kiss and Ride” lane is for stopping to drop off your child.
It is NOT for parking in the morning.
If you need to come into the school, please park in a designated parking spot.
The parking authorities frequently make visits to our school and many members of our community have been ticketed with very expensive fines.
For parents who wish to walk their child to the
Kindergarten area, please park your car in the parking area.
Please do not park in the Kiss and Ride area or the reserved parking spots.
TRANSPORTATION
BUS LOADING ZONE
Please be reminded that the front of the school is designated as a “Bus Loading Zone”.
Parents are not permitted to pick up or drop off students in this zone.
The safety of the students is our priority.
Please
drop off or pick up students in the designated school parking lot or the “Kiss and Ride” area.
We would like to remind you that bus stops have been assigned by the transportation department and that any changes to the assigned stop must be handled through the school office.
Requests for changes can take up 10 days to be implemented.
Please ensure your child is only getting on and off the bus at the stop that has been assigned .
It is also important to remind parents and caregivers that all students in JK, SK and Grade 1 must be met at the bus stop.
Any child not met at the bus stop will be returned to the school and parents will be required to make arrangements to pick them up from the school.
Only students who have been issued a bus tag, which must be attached to their backpacks in a highly visible location, will be permitted to ride the bus .
Beginning mid ‐ October, students who have requested courtesy seats will be informed by Mrs.
Castro if/when a seat becomes available.
Please check the
Region of Peel’s Transportation Department’s websites ( www.stopr.ca
and https://businfo.stopr.ca/ ) to check for delays and
cancellations.
All concerns and complaints regarding bus transportation are to be made directly to the S.T.O.P.R.
at 905 ‐ 890 ‐ 6000.
SCHOOL BUS SAFETY EXPECTATIONS:
Ensuring your child’s safety is a very important goal for all those working with him/her.
You are asked to carefully review the following expectations for students while they are riding on school buses .
Students not following these rules may lose the privilege
of riding on a school bus.
Students are required to:
Travel to school and return home on the assigned bus according to the transportation address registered at the school
Carry their bus card at all times if issued by the school
Be at their stop 10 minutes before pick ‐ up time
Listen to the driver when getting on and off the bus, especially when a road must be crossed
Go directly to their seat and stay seated until they are let off the bus
Follow all instructions from the bus driver, especially about where they put their belongings
Not eat or drink, fight, swear, smoke or other types of poor behaviour
Not open or close windows unless the driver permits it
Not damage the bus seats (students will be held responsible)
Respect private property while waiting for their school bus
Not talk to the bus driver while the bus is in operation unless it is necessary

Kindergarten area, please park your car in the parking area.
Please do not park in the Kiss and Ride area or the reserved parking spots.
RECESS BREAKS
Recess breaks serve a special purpose in the daily life of a school.
If your child is sick, he or she should be at home recuperating and not spreading their flu, cold, etc.
There is no indoor supervision at recess for students as staff members are occupied elsewhere or on duty outside.
SHERIDAN COLLEGE JUSTICE MENTORS
Sheridan College is once again offering the Justice Mentor program at Cardinal Newman C.E.S.
Students seeking careers as police officers will be volunteering in our school on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoons beginning October 14 th .
These students meet the board requirements for volunteers working in the school and have been assigned to work in various classrooms under the
direct supervision of the respective classroom teacher.
An after ‐ school program will start in November.
Permission forms will go home shortly.
SPECIAL ASSIGNMENT TEACHER
Again this year Dufferin ‐ Peel will have a Special Assignment Teacher (SAT) visiting each school in the system to assist with curriculum.
Our SATs, Mrs.
Kastoris and Mrs.
Wadden, will be working in partnership with classroom teachers to support our school plan.
These teachers may be working in your child’s classroom from time to time throughout the year.
Mrs.
Kastoris and Mrs.
Wadden come to us with experience in the area of curriculum planning.
STUDENT ACCIDENT INSURANCE COVERAGE
As required by the Education Act and Ministry of Education, the Dufferin ‐ Peel Catholic District School Board annually provides parents with information about cost effective student accident insurance coverage.
Although enrolment is voluntary, the Board encourages parents to take advantage of the inexpensive insurance coverage.
All students wishing to play on school sports teams should have
insurance.
Please take some time to read over the pamphlet sent home with your child.
EMERGENCY EVACUATION
During each term, staff and students will be practicing emergency evacuation procedures with their students.
These will include fire evacuation and lockdown procedures.
HEAD INJURIES
Even when it may appear to be insignificant, we try to inform parents of all reported head injuries at school, either by a phone call or by telling you of the incident in your child’s journal.
We do this in recognition of the potential danger of any injury involving the head area.
Our interest is not to alarm you, but to keep you informed.
Please remind your child to let a staff member know if they bump their head or if they get hurt at school.
PEDICULOSIS – HEAD LICE
Pediculosis is not considered a health problem because it is not a communicable disease.
However, from time to time incidents of
pediculosis occur in any school.
It is recommended that parents inspect their children’s hair, especially if persistent itching and scratching of the scalp is noticed .
Please inform the school if you discover an infestation.
Your pharmacist may suggest treatment information.
Remind your child that it is not appropriate to share other children’s combs and/or headgear, hats, etc.
INDOOR/OUTDOOR SHOES
The students should have a pair of indoor shoes to wear at school in class and for gym.
Outdoor shoes/ boots will be kept for outdoor use only and out of the classrooms in order to reduce the amount of dirt and mud brought indoors.
This will assist our custodial staff in keeping the school clean.
Thank you for your co ‐ operation.
STUDENT USE OF SCHOOL MATERIALS
The school will provide your child with the regular school materials such as pens, pencils, workbooks and textbooks.
Therefore, it is not necessary that you purchase any such materials.
However, it is important that children learn to make proper use of these materials and with this in mind, your child’s teacher will explain our expectations about this matter to the children.
One of our expectations is that students will be responsible for the replacement of lost books or damaged materials including texts or library books , which are expensive.
BOARD POLICY – PERSONAL ELECTRONIC DEVICES (PED)
The general definition of a PED: Personal Electronic devices are Wireless and/or Portable Electronic Handheld
Equipment that includes, but are not limited to, existing and emerging Mobile Communication Systems and Smart
Technologies (cell phones, smart phones, walkie talkies, pagers etc.), Portable Internet Devices (mobile managers, mobile messengers, Blackberry handsets etc.), Handheld Entertainment Systems (video games, CD Players, compact DVD players.
MP3 players, iPods, etc.), digital or film cameras, digital or analog Audio Recorders or Video Recorders (tape recorders, camcorders, cam phones, etc.).
The Dufferin ‐ Peel Catholic District School Board acknowledges that the dignity of the human person, as promoted by the Catholic Church, may be compromised by the potential invasion of personal privacy made possible by the inappropriate use of PEDs on school premises.
Also, the unregulated use of PEDs may pose a risk to the individual safety of students, staff and visitors in our schools.
In some cases, unregulated use of PEDs may facilitate illegal activities in the school environment or during school sanctioned activities.
It is the policy of the Dufferin ‐ Peel Catholic District School Board that
PEDs (personal electronic devices) are to be kept out of sight, turned off and not used within the school premises.
Failure to comply with this policy will result in the confiscation of the PED and/or disciplinary action.
This current policy is under review and we will
communicate any changes as they are presented.
EXCURSIONS AND FIELD TRIPS
Classes occasionally take educational trips to extend learning opportunities in curriculum areas.
Teachers need to follow appropriate
Board procedures.
A limited number of trips may be planned by teachers.
By Law the school must have on file permission forms,
which must be signed by the parents/guardians.
If, on the day of the excursion, your child has not returned his/her forms, and the parent/guardian cannot come into the school to sign
the permission form, the student will remain at the school.
Students will be reminded by their teachers about this policy prior to the trip taking place.
CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECKS
All volunteers having direct contact with students are required to provide a CBC (Criminal Background
Check) .
The new board policy has been expanded and includes volunteering on class trips, in classrooms,
Catholic School Advisory Council, etc.
If there are any community members wishing to volunteer, please visit the school office to pick up the necessary volunteer criminal reference check paperwork.
COMMUNICATION AND SCHOOL WEBSITE
It is a vital concern that the school and home should be in close communication.
Throughout the school year, we will be sending home newsletters and various communiqués and we ask that you read these in order to obtain information concerning school matters.
Please keep in mind that the monthly newsletter will be sent home with the youngest and only child in the family.
Please consider the option of having our newsletter emailed to you by completing and returning the attached CANADA’S ANTI ‐ SPAN LEGISLATION
CONSENT FORM.
This ensures you receive the newsletter, and other information, in a timely and direct manner.

HEARING AND VISION SCREENING
School Screening Association will be visiting our school this year on February 2, 2015 to conduct their clinic.
Your child’s hearing and vision should be screened every year.
Growing children are very susceptible to middle ear problems and one of the best ways to prevent hearing loss is early
detection of middle ear function issues.
A visit to an audiologist costs upwards of $50.00
and is not covered by O.H.I.P.
However, if your child is referred to a hospital clinic by your doctor, the cost is covered by O.H.I.P.
Your child’s hearing is not being monitored unless they are being seen by an Audiologist or and E.N.T.
A Free vision screeing is included with the Hearing Clinic.
Eye Examinations are covered by OHIP.
A fee of $15.00
is collected to help offset the cost of bringing this clinic to our school.
A permission form will be sent home with your child, approximately 2 weeks before the clinic date.
Please fill out the form, include $15.00
fee and return to the school prior to the clinic date.

The recent release of EQAO results for Grades 3 and 6 reading, writing and mathematics, Grade 9 mathematics, and the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT), show that Dufferin ‐ Peel has, once again, matched or exceeded the provincial averages in each assessment area.
This marks the sixth consecutive year in which the percentage of our elementary students achieving or exceeding the provincial standard has equalled or exceeded the provincial averages.
The Grade 9 test results and the
OSSLT results represent the fifth straight year in which our secondary students exceeded the provincial performance.
In fact, the Dufferin ‐ Peel secondary results were between 4% and 13% higher than the
provincial averages.
These results speak highly of our students and of you, their parents and guardians, who support their education.
They are also a clear reflection of the high degree of professionalism and dedication of our teaching and support staff, the commitment of our administrators and of the board of trustees towards supporting all students and ensuring their well ‐ being and continuous achievement.
In addition, they speak to the high level of collaboration, which to us, is reflective of a caring and committed Catholic school system.
EQAO assessments and the OSSLT are just two forms of measurement.
In the context of the goals of the
Ontario Catholic School Graduate Expectations, no single assessment provides a complete picture of student well ‐ being and/or achievement.
However, as EQAO is used throughout the province to indicate student success, we take great satisfaction in our collective efforts to honour results that demonstrate
that extraordinary lives are indeed growing with a great Catholic Education here in Dufferin ‐ Peel.
And, while we reflect with pride on our success, we continue to be collectively committed to our moral purpose of supporting each and every student, from early years to vocation, through the goals outlined in our Strategic Plan, System Strategic Direction, Catholic Board Learning Plan and Catholic Board
Corporate Plan.
Congratulations to all on these very positive results and to the ongoing well ‐ being and success of our
students.
Thank you to all parents and guardians for choosing a Dufferin ‐ Peel Catholic education and for your contribution and support as we work towards the continued success and well ‐ being of all students.
