Directed by: Mr. M. Burnham & Mrs. N. Gabriele Directed by: Mr. M. Burnham & Mrs. N. Gabriele Jean-Paul Sartre , (1905-1980) born in Paris in 1905, studied at the École Normale Supérieure from 1924 to 1929 and became Professor of Philosophy at Le Havre in 1931. With the help of a stipend from the Institut Français he studied in Berlin (1932) the philosophies of Edmund Husserl and Martin Heidegger. After further teaching at Le Havre, and then in Laon, he taught at the Lycée Pasteur in Paris from 1937 to 1939. Since the end of the Second World War, Sartre has been living as an independent writer. Oscar Fingal O'Flahertie Wills Wilde was born in Dublin on 16 October 1854. His father was a successful surgeon and his mother a writer and literary hostess. Wilde was educated at Trinity College, Dublin and Magdalen College, Oxford. While at Oxford, Wilde became involved in the aesthetic movement. After he graduated, he moved to London to pursue a literary career. Wilde was an Anglo-Irish novelist, playwright, poet and critic, and a celebrity in late 19th century London. 1854-1900 Sartre is one of those writers for whom a determined philosophical position is the centre of their artistic being. Although drawn from many sources, for example, Husserl's idea of a free, fully intentional consciousness and Heidegger's existentialism, the existentialism Sartre formulated and popularized is profoundly original. Its popularity and that of its author reached a climax in the forties, and Sartre's theoretical writings as well as his novels and plays constitute one of the main inspirational sources of modern literature. In his philosophical view atheism is taken for granted; the "loss of God" is not mourned. Man is condemned to freedom, a freedom from all authority, which he may seek to evade, distort, and deny but which he will have to face if he is to become a moral being. The meaning of man's life is not established before his existence. Once the terrible freedom is acknowledged, man has to make this meaning himself, has to commit himself to a role in this world, has to commit his freedom. And this attempt to make oneself is futile without the "solidarity" of others. Biography The conclusions a writer must draw from this position were set forth in "Qu'est-ce que la littérature?" (What Is Literature?), 1948: literature is no longer an activity for itself, nor primarily descriptive of characters and situations, but is concerned with human freedom and its (and the author's) commitment. Literature is committed; artistic creation is a moral activity. While the publication of his early, largely psychological studies, L'Imagination (1936), Esquisse d'une théorie des émotions (Outline of a Theory of the Emotions), 1939, and L'Imaginaire: psychologie phénoménologique de l'imagination (The Psychology of Imagination), 1940, remained relatively unnoticed, Sartre's first novel, La Nausée (Nausea), 1938, and the collection of stories Le Mur (The Wall and other Stories), 1938, brought him immediate recognition and success. They dramatically express Sartre's early existentialist themes of alienation and commitment, and of salvation through art. His central philosophical work, L'Etre et le néant (Being and Nothingness), 1943, is a massive structuralization of his concept of being, from which much of modern existentialism derives. The existentialist humanism which Sartre propagates in his popular essay L'Existentialisme est un humanisme (Existentialism is a Humanism), 1946, can be glimpsed in the series of novels, Les Chemins de la Liberté (The Roads to Freedom), 1945-49. Sartre is perhaps best known as a playwright. In Les Mouches (The Flies), 1943, the young killer's committed freedom is pitted against the powerless Jupiter, while in Huis Clos (No Exit), 1947, hell emerges as the togetherness of people. Biography: http://www.nobelprize.org/nobel_prizes/literature/laureates/1964/sartre-bio.html Drama and tragedy marred Wilde's private life. He married Constance Lloyd in 1884 and they had two sons, but in 1891 Wilde began an affair with Lord Alfred Douglas, nicknamed 'Bosie'. In April 1895, Wilde sued Bosie's father, the Marquis of Queensberry, for libel, after the Marquis has accused him of being homosexual. Wilde lost and, after details of his private life were revealed during the trial, was arrested and tried for gross indecency. He was sentenced to two years of hard labour. While in prison he composed a long letter to Douglas, posthumously published under the title 'De Profundis' . His wife took their children to Switzerland and adopted the name 'Holland'. Wilde was released with his health irrevocably damaged and his reputation ruined. He spent the rest of his life in Europe, publishing 'The Ballad of Reading Gaol' in 1898. He died in Paris on 30 November 1900. His output was diverse. A first volume of his poetry was published in 1881 but as well as composing verse, he contributed to publications such as the 'Pall Mall Gazette', wrote fairy stories and published a novel 'The Picture of Dorian Gray' (1891). His greatest talent was for writing plays, and he produced a string of extremely popular comedies including 'Lady Windermere's Fan' (1892), 'An Ideal Husband (1895)' and 'The Importance of Being Earnest' (1895). 'Salomé' was performed in Paris in 1896. . The Cast Nicole Smieja Michael DiLella Lane (Manservant) Erin Crook & Stacey Bondareva Merrimen (Maids) Michael Brijeski Rev. Gabriele Directors Stage Crew I am so thrilled to have the opportunity to play the role of Lady Bracknell during my second show with Gonzaga Players. It has been an enormous amount of fun playing such an insufferable character and acting mean! I have learned so much throughout the last few months; it has been a truly remarkable experience getting to know this wonderful cast and creating so many memories with them. I would like to thank Mr. Burnham, Mrs. Gabriele, Mr. Eagles and Mrs. Gomes for the many hours they spent giving us directions, making our costumes and bringing this show to life. I hope you all enjoy the show as much as we do performing it. As I am in grade 9, this is my first opportunity to work with the Gonzaga Players and being a part of a play. I have had a lot of fun growing as an actress and this experience has allowed me to get to know the amazing cast and all the teachers involved in the production. I have learned so much and I am so thankful to have been part of this production. It is an experience I will never forget! Thank you to Mr. Burnham and Mrs. Gabriele for all of your hard work and dedication. This is my second time as a Gonzaga Players, and I have enjoyed being able to grow as an actor and work with these amazing students. We have all become great friends, and they have made this year and experience so enjoyable. I have learned a lot from my fellow cast members, and they have helped me improve as an actress. I would like to thank Mr. Burnham, Ms. Gabriele, Ms. Gomes, and Mr. Eagles; without them this play would have not been possible. Their guidance and advice will stay with us for years to come! Being a member of the Gonzaga Players in my final year of high school will be one of the greatest memories of this journey. Without the dedication of Ms. Gomes, Mr. Eagles and the entire crew, I know this production would not have been possible! The stage feels like my home and I am honoured to share it with such talented actors. I would like to recognize Mr. Burnham and Ms. Gabriele, for their countless acting and life lessons. Thank you for all of your effort and helping me make this year so unforgettable. I learned a lot throughout my experience with Gonzaga players. It has been a great and fun experience playing the character of Joseph Garcin. A great thanks is due to my fellow cast members, we have grown together as great friends and have learned a lot from each other. I also want to thank all the teachers that were involved in the production of this play, without their advice we would be nowhere. I know that being involved with the Gonzaga Players this year will be a high school memory I will never forget. Being a member of Gonzaga Players this year has been a huge honor. With this being my first year, I have learned a lot that I know that I will use in the future. The memories that have been made this year are simply said … priceless! I hope the audience enjoys this year’s production. I would especially like to thank Mr. Burnham and Mrs. Gabriele for their advice, Ms. Gomes for our fantastic costumes and to our families and friends for all of their support. Working on has been a great experience and I’d like to thank all the teachers who helped put this production together and for their advice throughout the year. The Gonzaga Players has given me the opportunity to be part of something that I am so passionate about. As a member of this talented group of actors, it really has made my time at Gonzaga so memorable and has enhanced my education. I like to thank my fellow cast members, family, and friends for all of your encouragement and support. My experience as a Gonzaga Player has been wonderful. Throughout this year we have all grown as a cast and had a lot of fun during the process. This is my second time being involved with the Gonzaga Players and it was just as great as my first time. These past six months have helped me grow as an actor, with this new role I had as Chasuble. I had a great time working with a very dedicated cast, and a special thank you to Mr. Burnham, Mrs. Gabriele, Mrs. Gomes and Mr. Eagles who made this show possible. I have never had as much fun in my whole life as being a part of the Gonzaga Players. It was an experience I know that I will remember for the rest of my life. Not only have I obtained a further understanding of acting, but I have also learned how important and necessary teamwork is in achieving success. I’d like to especially thank my parents and sister who encouraged me to audition, and to Mr. Burnham and Mrs. Gabriele whose guidance has helped us all to make. I have made friends, learned, and above all…had fun. These are three things that are crucial to making anything worthwhile. Thank you so much, and please enjoy the show. Gonzaga Players has got to be one of the best choices I have made by far throughout my entire time of high school. At first, drama never really stood out to me and I was always a little scared to perform in front of an audience. But luckily one of best and closest friends, convinced me to take drama in grade 10 and ever since it has become a huge part of my life. I would never have imagined that I was going to be a member of an actual production and more so have been given such an important role. I know that all the hard work that our entire cast has put into has paid off and I hope that what we show can really show what we have to offer in terms of acting. Quite honestly, I have grown so much closer with each and every one of my fellow cast members this year and the friendships I have made and developed over the last few months I will remember for the rest of my life. As this is my first year in Gonzaga Players, I really hope all the work and effort will translate into great performances on the stage. I want to thank the teachers that have made all this possible, our fantastic directors - Mr. Burnham, Mrs. Gabriele, and Mr. Eagles for all of their moral support and guidance we needed during rehearsals. Special thanks to Mrs. Gomes for putting together our amazing costumes. It is truly an honour to be in this year’s play and will be something that I never forget it. Thank you and now enjoy the show! I cannot even express how amazing experience this opportunity was and having the chance to get to know the entire cast is something that I will always remember! I feel like the cast has grown so close and we have all became like family! I want to thank Mr. Burnham, Mr. Eagles, Ms. Gabriele, and Ms. Gomes and everyone else who was involved in the production of The Importance of Being Earnest and giving us the chance of being part of the Gonzaga Players. This amazing experience, however, would not have been possible without the direction and guidance of Mr. Burnham and Mrs. Gabriele, who helped us bring this play to life. I would also like to thank Mr. Eagles for his charisma and support, Mrs. Gomes, for creating these beautiful costumes, and of course, my fellow Gonzaga Players for making this year so incredible!
