We, parents, students, teachers, administrative and support staff – walk and grow together in the faith which we received at our Baptism. And it is the “together” that we grow. And as we learn from nature, growth relies on sun and water and nutrition. Otherwise, it may fade away and even die. Our growth is primarily a relationship with God, who at our Baptism, called us by name. But the response of each of us to that growth is both personal and communal. We grow in our faith in the nurturing atmosphere of our Catholic community be that of our local parish, our home, or our Catholic school community. Striving for Excellence Our school community will celebrate Catholic Education Week, May 4-8, 2015. Students will be involved in a variety of activities throughout the week. Parents are welcome to join us on: Monday May 4 – Liturgy @ 9:50 Wednesday May 6 – Poetry Presentations @ 12:45 pm Thursday May 7 – Grade 8 Confirmation @ St. Ignatius Loyola Parish – 7 pm Parish Information – St. Ignatius Loyola Catholic Church Sacramental Dates Grade 8 Confirmation – Thursday May 7, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. (Church) Grade 2 First Communion Congratulations to our Grade 2 students who received the Sacrament of Holy Communion on Sunday April 19, 2015! Many thanks to Mrs. McDonald, Mrs. Wickham and Mrs. Grattan for preparing our students. Thank you also to Mrs. MacPherson, Mrs. Wickham, Mrs. Zanchetta and Mrs. Barlow for leading the St. Clare choir at First Communion. A special thanks to the parents and volunteers who were able assist with our Grade 2 First Communion Retreat. May Virtue - Acceptance / Conflict is Inevitable, Bullying is Not This month we will celebrate the virtue of Acceptance. One of the great wonders of the world we live in is that no two people are exactly alike. The virtue of Acceptance describes our ability to look at the attitudes and actions of those around us and then just stop to consider without judging them. The virtue of Acceptance means that we look beyond what we see and see a person created and loved by God. We would appreciate your support in discussing this virtue with your child and encouraging behaviours that would demonstrate this virtue An Accepting Person… Is friendly and open to all God’s people, regardless of of age, beliefs, gender, culture or ability Sees the positive traits in all people even if he / she disagrees with them Avoids judging or stereotyping others Understands that there may be more than one way to do things Safe School Initiatives Kiss and Ride Many thanks to everyone for following the Kiss and Ride Reminders! Please continue to do so to ensure the safety of our students each morning. Punctuality and Attendance Regular attendance at school is not only required by law but also ensures your child develops good work habits and time management skills while maximizing learning potential. Punctuality is equally important. A number of students continue to arrive late on a daily basis. Lates are recorded as part of each student’s attendance profile. When a child is late, they miss valuable teaching time and cause disruption to the other students. Let’s work together to encourage regular attendance and punctuality for all students. Thank you for your attention to this request. Bicycle Parking With the beginning of nicer weather, students who ride their bicycles to school are asked to park and lock their bicycles along the fence at the Kindergarten yard. Thank you. Activities and Events… Track and Field 2015 Track and Field Day will take place on Friday May 15, 2015 for our students in Grades 4 to 8. Students will be competing in running and field events to determine who will represent St. Clare Catholic School at the Family Track and Field Meet on Tuesday June 9, 2015. A permission letter will be sent home. Eco Angels: Shepherds of a Greener Earth April showers bring May flowers! Spring is here and we will be concentrating on rejuvenating the green space in the front garden. Weeds will be removed, plants will be re positioned and more soil will be added. The Eco-Team led a variety of activities leading up to Earth Day to help bring awareness to a variety of issues related to our environment. Students learned about the importance of reducing our waste, reusing our resources and recycling. We plan to continue to monitor our energy use for the rest of the year. We will also continue to encourage students to walk, bike or roll to school, especially with the nice weather approaching. Be Cool! Walk to School! Intermediate Boys and Girls Basketball Go Cougars Go! Our intermediate students had a great basketball season. All players demonstrated great skill and improvement in all areas. We have these rehearsals for precautionary purposes only, so that in the event of an actual emergency, students will be prepared to respond in a safe and responsible manner. Warm Weather Dress Code We will begin the process of developing class lists and staffing for the 2015 - 2016 school year. Please be aware that we will need to develop a number of combined classes – a reality in all schools in the province. St. Clare Catholic School Yearbook Thank you to Mrs. Ross, Mrs. Flagg and Mrs. Banovic, who have been working on our school yearbook. A letter was sent home to parents regarding orders and payment. If you have not submitted your order and/or payment please do so by Wednesday, May 6, 2015. The yearbook will be distributed to students at the end of June. Board Policy states that all students are expected to dress in clean, neat and practical attire. Appropriate attire is the criterion for acceptable dress that most often reflects our attitude toward any given situation. The expectation is that we avoid such recreational wear as tank tops, halter tops, muscle shirts, strapless tops, spaghetti straps, bare midriffs, short shorts, cut offs, and shirts with inappropriate logos/symbols. The items are contrary to both the philosophy of our Catholic schools and the standards that we set as parents and educators. 6th ANNUAL HATS OFF 2 KIDZ On Wednesday, May 20th at 9:00 a.m., St. Clare Catholic School will be participating in the 6th Annual Walk-a-thon in support of Hats Off 2 Kidz, Leukemia Research at Sick Kids Hospital. Hats off 2 Kidz is a charitable organization in the support of Leukemia Research for the Hospital for Sick Children and Sick Kids Foundation. To date, Hats Off 2 Kidz has raised over $ 800,000.00. Are You Moving? On Event Day, the children are asked to wear a baseball cap as a sign of support for children living with leukemia and the effects of chemotherapy. We are beginning the process of planning classes and staffing for September, 2015. Remember Ontario Educational Re Mindsets are the assumptions and expectations we have for ourselves and others. These attitudes guide our behavior and influence our responses to daily events. - Dr. Robert Brooks Probability: A number from 0 to 1 that shows how likely it is that an event will happen. Tips for Fostering a Growth Mindset: Tip # 4. Be mindful of the goals you set for your children and the messages they send. Work with your child to set goals that are reasonable and desirable for both of you. All goals should emphasize growth – the development of a skill or the expanding knowledge. Grades 7 & 8: Continuing the Conversation About Your Money Decisions! Big Bi Ideas Let’s discuss “Money in the News”… Have your child monitor the news in all its forms (T.V., on-line…) to watch for stories about money. Talk with your child about some of the stories or items they have heard about in the news (e.g., how could this ‘news story’ impact our community and/or family financially?) Probability from 4-6 Experimental Probability (a real-life experience): Suppose we have three pairs of socks in a drawer, one blue pair, one green pair, and one red pair. What is the probability of getting a matching pair if we reach into the drawer and, without looking, pick two socks? Theoretical Probability (based on analyzing what could happen): Suppose you have three pairs of socks in the laundry, one blue pair, one green pair, and one red pair. Now suppose that somehow four socks disappear. Which is more likely: that the two socks that are left will match or that they will not match?
