Brandeis National Committee PHILANTHROPY LEARNING COMMUNITY Introduce a friend, neighbor or family member to our local chapter and share Brandeis today The Somerset Chapter Programs for May – August 2016 1 IDEAS FROM IRIS Spring is upon us! The trees and bushes lost their leaves over the winter and now begin to grow new leaves and flower. As in nature, it is time for Somerset Chapter of BNC to grow and flower. To help do this, I will be stepping down as president as of July 1, 2016. With your help we have grown in numbers, experienced fabulous trips, and learned from study groups and programs. We did this meeting our financial and membership goals as well as using the abundant Study Group materials provided by National. We won several Louis D. Brandeis Awards because of these accomplishments. While we were helping Brandeis and ourselves, we also provided help for many local agencies. It is now time for others to share their expertise, talents and energy in order for us to continue to grow, learn and achieve even more. Doing this we should not lose sight of our financial goals to help Brandeis University and the local organizations. I am proud to acknowledge that while we were improving our minds, and making new friends, we financially supported research at Brandeis University, especially the latest endeavor, Sustaining the Mind, (research to find a cure for NeuroDegenerative diseases, such as ALS, MS, and Alzheimer’s Disease). We also support the Libraries of the University as well as help to attract the best and the brightest students. Volunteer and nominate new members, not only to better your own lives but also to enrich the lives of others and further the growth of our Chapter. Without your help and generosity, the success we have achieved would not be possible. I look forward to continuing being an active member and remaining in close contact with you all. Thank you for your help with BNC and especially for the immense outpouring of HELP in every sense of the word during my difficult time three years ago. Your devotion and prayers helped my recovery and for this I will be forever grateful. Love, Iris 2 MISSION STATEMENT Brandeis National Committee is dedicated to providing philanthropic support to Brandeis University, a distinguished Liberal Arts and Research University founded by the American Jewish Community. Our members are driven to make a difference to both shape the future and help those in current need. At Brandeis University, social justice is a way of life – students are constantly involved in volunteer efforts and outreach. BNC chapters find the social justice program a way to link to Brandeis and promote its values. Our Somerset Chapter has engaged in social justice efforts with two local agencies that make a difference in our area. They are JFS (Jewish Family Service) and AECDC (Anshe Emeth Community Development Corporation). At JFS our members have volunteered as mentors to the home-bound, elderly, and young families. There are a myriad of services that JFS provides and many ways they can utilize our BNC volunteers. JFS has an outstanding and intensive training program which is given prior to beginning volunteer work. The AECDC, another local social service agency, provides community-based social, legal, educational, and health-related services to people in financial difficulty. Our BNC members have helped by supporting their B-FED and HELP programs. Donations of diapers and baby formula are always welcome. CDC can immediately use any extra childrens’ diapers and sealed baby formula. Donations of unneeded health equipment can be used by someone who can’t afford it.
