DEFINITIONS OF TYPES OF STARTS
Warm Start – If the aircraft has flown within the last hour or two and the
engine oil on the dipstick is warm or hot to the touch then the engine is
warm.
First Start of the Day – If the engine is cool to the touch and the oil on the
dipstick is cool to the touch then the engine will need to be primed for the
start. This would be typical of an aircraft that has just been pulled out of
the hangar for the first flight of the day.
Cold “Cold Soaked” Start (winter operations) – If the aircraft has been
sitting in temperatures of ≤ 20° F (-7° C) for a period of more than two
hours then the engine is “Cold Soaked” and will need to be primed at least
10 seconds and then boost for the start. Be sure the oil pressure comes up
within 60 seconds after start. If it doesn’t, shut down the engine and
inform maintenance. If the engine fires but fails to start and the firing
diminishes in strength, the spark plugs have most likely become frosted
and the aircraft must then be preheated to alleviate this problem.
Flooded Start – If you have primed the engine and the presence of fuel
under the aircraft is visible then you most likely have a flooded engine.
Over priming is also evident by weak firing and puffs of black smoke from
the exhaust stack. A flooded engine could possibly cause an engine fire on
start. You should review the “Engine Fire During Start” checklist before
continuing with a flooded start.

If engine fires, retard throttle and slowly advance the mixture to full
rich. As the engine begins to run advance the throttle slightly to keep
the engine running.

climb as you turn on course to at least

Lost Procedures
The following are basic guidelines to consider in the event of becoming
lost:
1.
Maintain Positive Aircraft control at all times.
2.
Check heading indicator with the magnetic compass. Reset heading
indicator as necessary (if applicable to aircraft).
3.
Maintain original heading, or circle present position over a prominent
landmark.
4.
If at low altitude, climb to a higher altitude.
5.
Using GPS: Navigate to nearest airport
6.
Using the sectional chart, attempt to locate and identify any
prominent landmark.
7.
Using available Navaids (VOR triangulation, GPS) to determine
position.

If unable to determine position, commit to the six C’s:

CONFESS – Admit to yourself you are lost.
CLIMB – Climb to avoid obstructions, gain better visibility and
radio reception.
CIRCLE – Pick a nearby landmark and stay in the general vicinity of
the landmark.

IN-FLIGHT INTERCEPT PROCEDURES
If you are intercepted by a U.S. Military or law enforcement aircraft, immediately:
1. Follow the instructions given by the intercepting aircraft. (See chart below)
2. Notify ATC, if possible
3. Attempt to communicate with ATC on the emergency frequency 121.5 MHz, giving the identity and
position of your aircraft and the nature of the flight.
4. If equipped with a transponder, squawk 7700, unless otherwise instructed by ATC. If any instructions
received by radio from any sources conflict with those given by the intercepting aircraft by visual or
radio signals, request clarification while continuing to comply with the instructions given by the
intercepting aircraft.

A) Route.
(1) Route ASSIGNED in the last ATC clearance received
(2) If being VECTORED, by the direct route from the point of radio
failure to the fix, route, or airway specified in the vector
clearance.
(3) In the absence of an assigned route, by the route that ATC has
advised may be EXPECTED in a further clearance.
(4) In the absence of the above, by the route FILED in the flight plan.
B) Altitude. At the highest of the following altitudes or flight levels for
the route segment being flown
(1) The MINIMUM ALTITUDE for IFR operations
(2) The altitude ATC has advised may be EXPECTED in a further
clearance.

IFD - SYSTEM FAILURE
1. Stand-by instruments ................Reference to maintain aircraft control
In the unlikely event of an IFD failure, the pilot does not lose the ability to
control the autopilot through the remaining IFD controls. If this
malfunction occurs, the pilot may continue flight using remaining IFD and
operational autopilot.

If attitude data is not available on the remaining IFD
a. Autopilot GPSS Mode ................................................... ACTIVATE
b. Autopilot Altitude Hold................................................. ACTIVATE

If failure occurs while flying in IMC ................................ EXIT IMC
