RUN-ON SENTENCE EXERCISES

EXERCISE 1

Directions: Put a period at the end of each complete thought. Start the next complete thought with a capital letter.

1.

The spaghetti sauce wasn't very good the meat was burned the garlic was too overbearing.

2.

Janice was afraid to go visit the dentist she had terrible memories of the root canal he'd done on her last visit.

3.

Cardinals are territorial birds they take up residence in a certain area they don't allow other cardinals to nest in the same territory.

4.

Cindy was afraid to step on the scale at her health club she knew she'd gained five pounds over the holidays.

5.

Charles studied his class notes for two hours every day after school that way he'd avoid having to cram for tests.

EXERCISE 2

Directions: Correct the following run-ons and splices by using a comma and a short joining word/coordinating conjunction. Be careful l) to punctuate the sentence correctly, and 2) to choose a logical joining word.

1.

Suzanne desperately wanted to buy a new pair of designer jeans she didn't have the money to get them.

2.

Thelma did not do well on today's Chem 12 quiz, she hadn't studied at all for it.

3.

You can clean up your room you can't go out and play golf.

4.

I walked into the new record store there I found the new Run/DMC album I was looking for.

5.

Bruce didn't have the nerve to ask someone to the senior prom he sat at home that night wishing he had more courage.

EXERCISE 3

Directions: Now make your own coordinated sentences. On a separate sheet of paper, write seven compound sentences (that's what this type of sentence is called) using each of the coordinating conjunctions once. Underline the coordinating conjunction in each sentence and make sure that you have an independent clause on either side of it.

EXERCISE 4

Directions: Choose from the list of long joining words a word or phrase that shows a logical relationship between the two ideas in each run-on. Then, on a separate sheet of paper, correct the run-on, punctuating the sentence according to the rules you've just learned.

Mary was in the kitchen all afternoon cooking a fantastic Sunday dinner, her husband Joe sat with his feet propped up in front of the football game on TV.

Nancy wanted to buy a new VCR so that she could tape All My Children her bank account wasn't large enough.

3.

Defensive linemen should be tall they can't see over the offensive linemen when they stand up.

4.

House plants can add beauty and warmth to any home, they provide a good source of oxygen.

EXERCISE 5

Directions: On a separate sheet of paper, combine the following sets of sentences using subordination. You may use either subordinating conjunctions or relative clauses. Just don't rely on the same means in each sentence.

1.

The Sundance Kid's girlfriend was actually a prostitute in Fanny Porter's

Sporting House. Hollywood portrayed the Sundance Kid's girlfriend as a school teacher.

2.

The hamburger's history began in the middle ages in Russia. The Tartars ate chopped raw meat seasoned with salt, pepper, and onion juice.

3.

Every day thousands of Americans eat Kentucky Fried chicken. They like their chicken "finger lickin' good."

4.

I got my first college English paper back. The teacher had written on the bottom, "How did you get this far without getting gonged?"

5.

The Autobahn was built by Hitler to transport tanks and troops to

Germany's borders in World War II. The Autobahn is still one of the world's finest highway systems.
