Research Projects
EU MIDTAL/WATER
Project Specific Research Interests & Roles
MIDTAL (Microarrays for the Detection of Toxic Algae) Research Project: The
project has developed a microarray for the rapid detection of a suite of toxinproducing microalgal (phytoplankton) species and their key toxins. The microarray
has been trialed across Europe including locations along the Irish coast where
harmful blooms are known to occur.
WATER (Warning of Algal Toxin Events) Research Project: The project demonstrates
the suitability of a suite of commercially available kits for the detection of biotoxins
in shellfish. The project is designed to assist shellfish producers in rapidly assessing
the quality of their product, particularly in the peripheral regions of northern
Europe.
International Activities
GEOHAB (Geography, Ecology and Oceanography of Harmful Algal Blooms).
Nominated onto the Scientific Steering Committee in 2003; chairman 2006-2010.
Senior guest editor Deep-Sea Research II special issue on Harmful Alga Blooms in
Stratified Systems.
Programme Advisory Group of the NERC Shelf sea Biogeochamistry Programme
(2012-2017)
