Our Virtue
of the month:
LOVE
God wants us to serve
and to see goodness in
everyone we meet.
A loving person …
 Wants the best for
others
 Is willing to make
sacrifices for the good of
others
 Knows that we are
all lovable
 Prays for others
God has given us many
people in our lives to
show us examples of
LOVE.
Our families,
teachers and friends show us their love everyday.
Love can be seen in the simplest acts of kindness,
such as sharing a pencil, playing a game, or even by
saying “thank you”. We should always show love for
others because love is about seeing the good in
people even when they make us angry. Sometimes
the greatest acts of love happen when we are angry,
such as not hitting our sibling back or not screaming
at our friends. Jesus is always with us and we should
always try to remember His most important lesson,
the lesson of love, because love is not about us - it is
about looking out for the good of others.
What does love look like to you?
Our Daily Prayer for April
Let us now pray...for the virtue of love so that we
will never be satisfied until all are satisfied. AMEN.
CATHOLIC EDUCATION OUR CATHOLIC HERITAGE
What has been the history of Catholic
education in the Dufferin-Peel Region?
Catholic schools were fundamental in the early
development of our region. With the support of
local parishes, bishops and parents, Catholic schools
were formed as an expression of a world view
differing from other schools. In 1837 in Mono
Township (Dufferin County), a school was dedicated
and housed at St. Cyprian Church. Later, a log church
housed a local Catholic school at St. Patrick’s in
Melanchthon Township.
In 1864, the first formal Catholic school was developed in
Melanchthon Township. In Peel, Catholic schools were
formed well before confederation as an expression of the
Catholic communities developing in our region. A more
detailed history of our Catholic education in our region can
be found in the book entitled Catholic Education in DufferinPeel - A Story Worth Telling.

VINCENT DE PAUL
BUNDLE UP CLOTHING DRIVE
APRIL 9 AND 10,
2016
Our next St. Vincent de Paul Society Bundle Up Sunday
will be the weekend of April 9/10. If you have any
clothing at home which children have outgrown, there is
a large population of needy families who are locally
supported by this organization. They are collecting gently
used clothing and household items such as: Coats, Boots,
Shoes, Household Goods, Baby clothes and items,
Children’s wear, Toys, Drapes, Ladies’ & Men’s clothing
and Accessories. A truck will be in the St. Joseph’s
Church parking lot for you to drop off any gently used
clothing or household items.
They DO NOT accept: appliances, baby furniture,
books or mattresses.
Thank you in advance for your generosity.
HAPPY EARTH
MONTH TO
EVERYONE!
April is Earth Month and the Eco Team has lots of
exciting activities planned for the month:
VESEY’S BULB FUNDRAISING
Please look over the Vesey’s Bulb catalogue that your
child brought home from school. We hope you find
something you will want to plant in your garden this
summer. Don’t forget to pass it around to your family
members too! All orders (order forms and collections
envelope) are due back to the school by April 13 with
cheques made payable to St. Gregory School. We will be
using the money raised to create a pollinator garden.
ECOKIDS BATTERY BUSTERS SPONSORED
BY “CALL2RECYCLE” BATTERY
RECYCLING CHALLENGE
St. Gregory School is collecting all kinds
of used batteries including alkaline
(AAA, AA, 9V etc.), rechargeable
(lithium), nickel cadmium and nickel zinc
batteries. In addition, we are collecting used cell
phones and cell phone batteries. We are pleased to
be diverting these dangerous items from landfills. Please
send in all of your batteries and cell phones before the
end of April, when our total collection will be weighed
and entered into a competition.
LITTER CHASE
All classes at St. Gregory School will be challenged to
participate in a litter chase on our school property, or
neighbouring public property, during the month of April.
We continue with our ongoing projects which include:
magic maker recycling, “Last out, light out” campaign,
litter free lunches, paper recycling, and GOOS paper
bins.
Eco team out, and saving the Earth!

SAFETY IN THE SCHOOL YARD
Everyone wants a peaceful school yard full of students who
play nicely with each other and show kindness and
acceptance to all. As parents you want your children to be
respected and to show respect to others. Throughout the
year we focus on
many activities that
will assist children in
playing safely and
respectfully.
At
regular meetings our
staff is in-serviced on
active school yard
supervision: they are
alert to activities that
indicate unsafe play.
The school staff is diligent in watching for bullying
behaviour, unsafe play or yard conditions and playful activity
that may lead to aggressive behaviour.
Given all of this, it is recognized that children are children
and do not always make safety conscious decisions. Be it at
home or at school, accidents can happen and the best of
children can sometimes place themselves in harmful
situations.
Like you, the staff of St. Gregory want children to have fun
at recess while practicing safe, active and appropriate play.
In order to achieve this goal we share with you some of the
many practices we reinforce during announcements, within
our classrooms and while on recess supervision. Your
assistance in reinforcing these rules will help in keeping all
the children safe while at school - and maybe while playing
in your neighbourhood as well.

- checking or hitting someone
- scratching, pinching, spitting, biting
Throwing unsafe objects: snowballs, ice, rocks,
sticks, sand, etc.
Playing unsafe or rough games: wrestling, tackling,
red rover, play-fighting, etc.
FRIENDSHIP STRATEGIES
Parents can be helpful in addressing positive behaviours
that will allow their child to build lasting friendships.
Helping children understand how to treat one another
and how to value and make friends are important,
positive steps in eliminating isolating behaviours.
THE TOP TEN WAYS TO KEEP YOUR
FRIENDS
1. Show them kindness and respect.
2. Stick up for them.
3. Be supportive when your friends need help and
advice.
4. Tell the truth, but be kind about it.
5. If you hurt a friend, say you are sorry.
6. If you make a promise, keep it.
7. Put some effort into friendships: otherwise your
friends might feel neglected.
8. Don’t try and change your friends; accept them the
way they are.
9. If a friend hurts you and apologizes, accept the
apology.
10. Treat your friends the way you want them to treat
you.
FUN TIPS FOR MORE ACTIVE CHILDREN
As a parent, it can sometimes be challenging to find ways
to help your kids get the physical activity they need
everyday. So we’ve (Participaction) put together this
guide with some simple tips to help get you started.
INTRODUCE PHYSICAL ACTIVITY INTO
YOUR CHILD’S LIFE EARLY
Choose a day care that spends plenty of time outside, in
the park, or at the playground. Select a preschool or day
care within walking distance of your home and leave the
car at home every day. You and your child will both
benefit from the walk.
BE A GOOD ROLE MODEL
Your kids are watching you, even when you’re watching
TV! Keep TV viewing in moderation. Make sure you live
an active life. It is important that your child sees you
running, walking and playing sports.
BALANCE SCREEN TIME WITH FUN TIME
Remove TVs and computers from your child’s bedroom.
Let your child choose two shows or computer games
they can watch or play a day.
SPORT PARTICIPATION IS PART OF THE
EQUATION
Sign your children up for sports groups and teams at the
earliest opportunity, so they can start learning important
skills. Make sure to keep it fun though. It’s the physical
activity that counts - not the competition. Volunteer to
help out with your child’s team or club.
FAMILY TIME IS FUN TIME
Try an active vacation destination, with a hiking trail or
hotel pool nearby. Go for a family walk, bike ride or
swim, take karate lessons or learn to throw a Frisbee
together, or even challenge the neighbours to a baseball
game.

Flexible Boundary Procedure
A reminder to parents/guardians of students that are at St.
Gregory under Flexible Boundary, grades 1 - 8.
This procedure is reviewed annually. Permission is granted
under the following conditions:
i) Transportation is your responsibility. The Board will not
provide either transportation or additional supervision for
students admitted under this procedure.
ii) This permission for attendance will be reviewed by the
Principal, annually.
iii) The student admitted under this procedure does not
automatically become eligible for the secondary school
serving this school. If it is not the secondary school he/she
would normally attend, application for Flexible Boundary
consideration will have to be made to the secondary
school principal at the appropriate time.
If you would like to continue to be granted permission
under this procedure for the 2016 - 2017 school year,
please put your request in writing by April 29, 2016.
Confirmations for Flex Boundary will be sent out in May.
STUDY TIPS
Everyone has different strategies and tips that help them
study and complete assignments. Whether your children
thrive on pressure or carefully plan everything in advance,
the tips outlined below will help your students achieve
their ultimate studying potential.
THE BASICS
 Encourage your children to keep up with readings and
assignments.
 Encourage your children to create a ‘to-do’ list to
keep organized and eliminate unnecessary stress.
 Encourage your children to take careful notes during
class. Review or rewrite them after class.
 Encourage your children to study in chunks of 20 to
50 minutes, then take a five-to-ten minute break. This
will give their brains time to absorb the information.
 Give your children plenty of time to research and
write essays.
 Encourage your children to ask for help at the library.
The staff can teach research skills that can save a lot of
time!
 Encourage your children to ask someone to review
their work before handing it in. Getting rid of typos
and awkward phrasing is an easy way to improve
grades.
