Papaloni And Mary said: “My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed, for the Mighty One has done great things for me - holy is his name. His mercy extends to those who fear him, from generation to generation. He has performed mighty deeds with his arm; he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts. He has brought down rulers from their thrones but has lifted up the humble. He has filled the hungry with good things but has sent the rich away empty. He has helped his servant Israel, remembering to be merciful to Abraham and his descendants forever, just as he promised our ancestors.” Luke 1:46-55 Principal: J. Krolewicz H. Secretary: P. Sometimes in life bad things happen to us that we cannot explain. During these times we tend to get mad at God for putting us through so much pain. We forget God is always there for us and He does not want to hurt us. When you feel sad and alone, remember to never lose HOPE, pray to Jesus and things will get better. What kinds of things can you say to bring someone hope? OUR CATHOLIC SCHOOL HERITAGE Exactly what separate school rights does section 93 (1) guarantee? Section 93 (1) protects all the provisions of the last separate school legislation passed before Confederation, the Separate School (Scott) Act of 1863. Among others, the Act provided the following rights: (a) to form a separate school board with five or more Catholic heads of family resident in a public school jurisdiction; (b) To receive government grants equitable with those of the public school system; commented that the 1871 Act did not affect separate schools. The separate school boards operating secondary school carried on, receiving funding from grants and taxes. However, early in the twentieth century the government passed legislation which forbade a separate school board from offering education beyond grade ten if its boundaries fell partially or fully within the boundaries of a high school district. Thus, all but one separate school board (in Dublin) lost their ability to receive tax or government grant financing beyond grade ten. Furthermore, if a separate school board chose to continue operating grades nine and ten, it received only elementary school grants for them. PARISH NEWS Youth in Ministry EDGE (for those in Grs 6-8) meets every 1st and 3rd Sunday of the month at 7 pm, after the 6 pm Mass. LIFE TEEN (for those in Grs 9-12) meets every 2nd and 4th Friday of the month from 6:30 to 8 pm. MASS IN THE EXTRAORDINARY FORM - A SOLEMN HIGH MASS IN HONOUR OF: The Immaculate Conception of Our Blessed Virgin Mary Will be held at St Joseph Parish on Monday, December 8, 2015 at 7pm. The Mass will be celebrated according to the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite (Missal of 1962). (c) To receive equitable funding; (d) To have separate school boundaries enlarged; (e) To elect separate school trustees with all the powers of public school trustees. Once section 93 (1) was enacted, why did Ontario’s separate school supporters continue to suffer financial hardship? The Separate School (Scott) Act of 1863 did not anticipate the creation and/or growth of corporations and public utilities in Ontario, or the creation of public high schools. These two omissions caused over 100 years of financial hardship and inequity for separate school supporters. Why did Catholic parents and students have to pay tuition to attend a Catholic high school after grade ten? In 1871 the Ontario government passed an Act to Improve the Common Schools and Grammar Schools of Ontario. This Act abolished common and grammar schools and created public schools for grades one to ten and high schools for grades nine to thirteen. The highest official with the Department of Education, Egerton Ryerson, Jubilee of Mercy in the Archdiocese of Toronto The Jubilee of Mercy was announced by Pope Francis as a year to be lived intensely in each local Church throughout the world, allowing every person to encounter the mercy of God. The most evident sign of this pastoral care is the chance to open a Door of Mercy in every diocese. These doors, analogous to the Holy Doors of the Papal Basilicas in Rome, will allow people who cannot travel to Rome to make a Jubilee pilgrimage. After the solemn inauguration of the Holy Year – marked by the opening of the Holy Door of Saint Peter's Basilica on December 8, 2015 – all locally-designated Churches Designated churches for the Jubilee with a Holy Door throughout the world will open their own Doors of Mercy of Mercy: in communion with the Church of Rome as part of the Eucharistic celebration of the Third Sunday of Advent or Gaudete Sunday. The Holy Father has asked that special indulgences be available for the Faithful throughout the Year of Mercy (December 8, 2015 – November 20, 2016). Jubilee churches in Rome, that is certainly an option. Otherwise, Cardinal Collins has designated seven churches within the Archdiocese of Toronto as Jubilee St. Patrick's Parish 131 McCaul Street, Toronto Merciful Redeemer Parish 2775 Erin Centre Blvd., Mississauga St. Anthony of Padua Parish 940 North Park Drive, Bramalea St. Patrick's Parish 11873 The Gore Road, Brampton St. Theresa's Parish 2559 Kingston Road, Scarborough The Martyrs' Shrine 16163 Highway 12 West, How to obtain the Jubilee Indulgence: For those able to make a pilgrimage to one of the St. Paul's Basilica 83 Power Street, Toronto Midland Churches, each with a Holy Door of Mercy. Going through one of these Holy Doors is a spiritual journey that shows, as the Holy Father said, "the deep desire for true conversion." In addition to passing through a Holy Door, each pilgrim is to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation, receive the Holy Eucharist while reflecting on God's great gift of mercy, make a profession of faith (recite either the Apostles' or the Nicene Creed), and pray for the Holy Father and for his intentions (an Our Father and a Hail Mary are recommended). For those who are elderly, confined and the ill, Pope Francis said that they may obtain the indulgence by "living with faith and joyful hope this moment of trial" and by receiving the Eucharist or by attending Mass and community prayer, "even through the various means of communication" (for instance, a Mass offered on television). For those in prison, they may obtain the indulgence in their prison chapels. Indulgences may be obtained for the dead by the carrying out of these same acts by the Faithful with the intention of offering the indulgence for someone who is deceased. And finally, for all Catholics, this jubilee indulgence may also be obtained when a member of the Faithful personally performs a spiritual or corporal work of mercy. BOARD OF TRUSTEES Dufferin-Peel’s Catholic schools are overseen by a board of 11 elected trustees. Trustees serve as system leaders of publicly funded education in their communities and province. They work collaboratively with their community to shape a vision for the board that is reflective of the input of parents, students and community members. Trustees advocate for excellence in education and act as role models to engender confidence in publically funded education. In addition, Catholic school trustees have a clearly defined role as stewards and guardians of Catholic education. Two student trustee representatives, elected by their peers, also sit with the board in a non-voting capacity. Regular meetings of the board are held on the fourth Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. in the Catholic Education Centre at 40 Matheson Boulevard West in Mississauga. Mario Pascucci acclaimed chair of Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board Thomas Thomas, Mississauga Ward 5 trustee, elected vice chair At the Organizational meeting of the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board held Tuesday, December 1, Mario Pascucci, trustee for Mississauga Wards 1 & 3, was acclaimed chair of the 11-member board. During his 32 years as a trustee, Mr. Pascucci has served in various leadership capacities, including five previous terms as chair of the board. He has also served as chair of the Board’s Administration and Finance Committee, Audit, and Faith and Program Committees. Thomas Thomas, trustee for Mississauga Ward 5, was elected vice-chair. Mr. Thomas has also served in various leadership capacities during his 11 years on the board. “I am humbled to be chosen as chair by my fellow trustees,” said Mario Pascucci. “I will do my best to represent this board and the community we serve. We have an awesome responsibility, both individually and collectively, and we look forward to continuing to spread the good news of Catholic education in Dufferin-Peel wherever we go.” The meeting opened with the annual address to the board by Director of Education, John B. Kostoff, who recognized and thanked system partners, including employee groups, trustees and staff at all levels for their commitment and dedication to Catholic education. Director Kostoff outlined another successful year for the board, recounting a list of achievements and accomplishments. John Kostoff, who is retiring in January, referenced the words of Pope Francis, who declared the Jubilee Year of Mercy beginning on December 8, “Let us seek and grant forgiveness to all who come to our door.” He added, “I can only image the impact this statement and the coming year will have on our students. Let us all, whatever our role, continue our mission in the tradition of our faith, to educate, guide and support all who come through our doors.” The Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board is one of the largest school boards in Ontario with approximately 83,000 students in 149 schools located throughout Mississauga, Brampton, Caledon and Orangeville. The board is also one of the largest employers in the region with approximately 11,000 employees. We owe a great debt of gratitude to our veterans of all wars and conflicts. We are blessed to live in this great country and with the events of the last weeks we continue to value freedom and resolve to always stand for and protect that freedom. Thank you to all of our administrators and teachers for their hard work. It shows again and again and as ever, in our 2015 EQAO scores. And while we can always improve we know that we can be assured that our students are reaching the goals that have been set for and by us. Each school will continue to develop their own plans for improvement. Results can be found on our Dufferin -Peel web site. During this Advent season many of our schools will be taking part in Advent Masses, liturgies, concerts, breakfasts with Santa and many other activities. EARLY TO BED...EARLY TO RISE Getting enough sleep is crucial to school success with academics, attitude, behaviour, social adjustment, effort, contentment and well-being. Research indicates that consistency in this routine is extremely important for success at school. SCHOOL ATTENDANCE Arriving late for class means that a pupil misses a very important part of the day - the time when instructions for the day’s activities are given, discussed and teaching begins. Entering a classroom late is embarrassing for a child. It interrupts the lesson for both the teacher and the other pupils. The habit or custom of punctuality is one that should be established very early in a child’s school life. School attendance and punctuality are legal requirements. We ask for your cooperation in ensuring your child’s regular attendance by arriving before 9:00 a.m. Please note if your child or yourself arrive during prayers/announcements, you will be denied entry until opening procedures are completed. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation. HAT/MITTEN/SCARF TREE We are continuing with sponsoring our Hat/Mitten/Scarf tree to help those in need this winter. Any kind of warm clothing will be accepted. We will continue to give our gifts of warmth to those in need through St. Joseph Parish contacts, specifically St. Vincent de Paul Society. COLD AND FLU SEASON Please use discretion in keeping your children home to recover if they are ill. A child who is coughing, wheezing, etc. is not in a state to learn and will only infect others. It is important to keep in mind that these results are a snapshot of student achievement, and must be considered along with a variety of assessments which occur in the classroom. This school year was unique in that not all students participated in the provincial assessments because of labour action in the English-language public school system. As a result, there is no provincial-level information. The new center will be modelled after St. James Catholic Global Learning Center in south-east Mississauga. Like the St. James Catholic Global Learning Centre in Mississauga, the learning experience to be offered at the proposed Catholic Global Learning Centre North embraces a global focus. Modelled after an internationally recognized program, the Catholic Global Learning Centre North will teach the Ontario Curriculum via an integrated, inquiry-based approach aligned with the Ontario Catholic School Graduate Expectations. All students attending this school will participate in this program. Once the program has been established, the plan is to apply for formal certification as an International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Program and Middle Years Program site. Between November 22 and December 5, parents/guardians in all Dufferin-Peel communities north of Highway 401 will be asked to complete an on-line survey about their interest in having their child/children attend such a program at a site located north of Highway 401. Information regarding the survey will be shared through school newsletters, on school websites, through school offices and on the Board website. Participation in this survey is voluntary and parents may choose to stop completing the survey at any time. Parents will not be asked to identify themselves or their child/ children. The information collected through the survey is for planning purposes only and will be used to inform recommendations about the potential site and more details which will follow at a later date. Board Policy 24.00 Access to Elementary Regional Programs of Choice The process for accessing elementary regional programs of choice must be equitable for all eligible pupils within the Board’s jurisdiction. If applications received by the due date exceed the available pupil places allotted to the regional program, a lottery process specific to the regional program will be activated to fill available pupil places. All eligible applicants, including siblings of pupils currently registered in the regional program, will participate in the lottery process. ECO TEAM NEWS The St. Gregory Eco Team is up and running again this year with student representation from Grades 1-8. The goal of our team is to make our world a better place, starting with our own community of St Gregory school and families. We meet frequently at lunch time to plan and carry out our projects for the year. As always, we will be working to reduce our waste production by continuing to recycle plastic, metal, glass and paper, and limiting our garbage. Families can help by packaging student lunches in reusable containers and sending reusable water bottles to school every day. We are also working to keep our energy use at a minimum by turning lights on only when rooms are occupied. We will continue to recycle markers this year so please send any used markers to school. Our new project this year is battery recycling and we look forward to receiving lots of used batteries that can be diverted from the garbage. We have lots of other awesome projects planned for the year, so check the newsletter for our updates. Eco Team out, and saving the earth! ST. MARCELLINUS GUITAR ENSEMBLE AND BAND VISIT ST. GREGORY SCHOOL Congratulations to our Secondary school music program for entertaining us and putting on a great show. The students were introduced to the various musical instruments and how they sound. The band and ensemble put us in the mood for Christmas. It was nice to see graduates of St. Gregory displaying their musical talents. A special thank you to Ms. Zullo for directing the music program, and to Mr. Horvat and Mr. Devine for their leadership. Wishing You And Your Family A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year 2016! From the staff and students of St. Gregory School
