Conscience is the voice of God within us. Our conscience reminds us how to act towards other people and how to be good to others. Sometimes it is hard for us to do the right thing, but we must always remember that the right thing to do is not always the easy thing to do. delivering food throughout the year. Last year we delivered over 10,000 pounds of food. Food staples are very much appreciated such as tuna and salmon, peanut butter, beans, rice, baby food, cereals, pasta, canned vegetables, soup. On behalf of the St. Vincent de Paul Team at St. Joseph’s Parish - Best Wishes as you prepare for a Joyous Christmas Season! ALL SAINTS’ DAY PARISH NEWS All Saints Day, celebrated on November 1st, reminds our community of those men and women (both known and unknown) who lived faithful lives in the Church. On this day we remember our saints in our prayers and ask for their prayers and intercessions. The historical roots of this celebration have to do with those martyrs who died in the early Church. Later in 837 A.D., Pope Gregory VI declared this day to be the date we remember all who lived and died for their faith. EDGE NIGHT ALL SOULS’ DAY Calling all youth from grades 6 to 8 ! You are invited to join us for Edge Night at St. Joseph Church every 1st and 3rd Sunday of the month. It takes place from 7:00 - 8:30 p.m. following the 6:00 p.m. Mass. Edge is a ministry that is designed to meet the educational, spiritual and social needs of young adolescents like You! Bring a friend and see you there! All Souls’ Day, November 2nd, is a Roman Catholic day of remembrance for friends and loved ones who have passed to shift the focus from those in heaven to those in purgatory. It is celebrated with masses and prayers in honour of the dead. While the Solemnity of All Saints is a day to remember the glories of Heaven and those there, the Feast of All Souls reminds us of our obligations to live holy lives and that there will be purification of the souls of those destined for Heaven. THANK YOU! FROM THE ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY OUR CATHOLIC SCHOOL HERITAGE Thank you for your generous donations during our annual Thanksgiving Food Drive. All food donated was given to the St. Vincent de Paul Society at St. Joseph Church. They filled their pantry and have stored excess for future ongoing needs. Through your generosity many families in our community are able to enjoy many meals together in challenging times. St. Gregory is a very giving, caring community. We are proud of our school’s accomplishments. CHRISTMAS HAMPER PROJECT A message from the St. Vincent de Paul Society: Once again, St. Gregory School will be participating in the Christmas Hamper Project. The St. Vincent de Paul Society realizes that the gift of giving to others is great modelling for children. We would request you endeavor to give gifts that are educational, gifts that kids can learn and grow on, such as: books, school supplies, puzzles, strategy games, art supplies and craft kits. Alternatively, we urge you to consider gift cards. The older kids do like making purchasing decisions for themselves and younger kids may take great pleasure in being able to pick for themselves something that they truly want. We recommend gift cards of no more than $25 for Wal-Mart, Target or Square One (unfortunately Erin Mills charges a minimal fee for this service). We are targeting to ensure that each person in a family receives a value of $50 each - which includes food, food vouchers and gift cards. Our clients generally shop at No Frills so the best food gift cards are Loblaws. Please note a huge part of our work is Were these four obstacles removed? Yes. The United Legislature of Canada East and Canada West in 1853, 1855 and 1863 removed all four hindrances. There was no more double taxation. It did not matter if there was a Catholic teaching in the common school. The separate school board did not need the permission of the common school board to open a new or additional separate school. The number of Catholic heads of family to establish a separate school was lowered from twelve to five. As a result, the number of separate schools grew considerably. What effect did the Canadian Constitution, create in the British North America Act (1867) (entitled either the Constitution Act or the Canada Act), have on separate schools? When the Fathers of Confederation came from New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Canada East and Canada West to meet in Charlottetown and Quebec, they quickly concluded, in the words of one of the Fathers, Sir Charles Tupper, that “Without this guarantee for the rights of minorities begin embodied in that new constitution, we should have been unable to obtain any Confederation whatever.” What guarantee for separate schools does the Canadian Constitution still contain? In 1867 the fathers of Confederation made section 93 (1) part of the Constitution. It states: Nothing in any such (provincial legislative) Law shall prejudicially affect any Right or Privilege with respect to Denominational Schools which any Class of Persons [i.e. separate school supporters] have by Law in the Province at the Union. AROUND THE HALLS SPORTS CROSS COUNTRY Congratulations to all the junior and intermediate students who participated in many cross country practices throughout September and October. Your efforts certainly paid off with great success at the Family and Board meets. Mrs. Moreira, Ms. West, Ms. Kelly, Ms. Roberto and Mrs. Herter would like to thank the students for their hard work and dedication during the season. We look forward to participating in the Board Meet. Go Grizzlies Go! REMEMBRANCE DAY During the month of November, let us remember those who so courageously gave their lives for our freedom. Let us remember the soldiers who are currently stationed around the world, working so hard to protect our safety. On November 11th, at 10:45 a.m., the whole school will reflect on the theme of Peace in honour of Remembrance Day. We also have a Hallway of heroes banner. Feel free to commemorate the life of a soldier who died in the line of duty by writing their name on our banner. Our students will be doing the same. Parents/guardians and grandparents are welcome! HEALTH AND SAFETY MEDIC ALERT Please note that St. Gregory School is enrolled in the Medic Alert “No Child Without” program. Medic Alert provides students with a custom engraved bracelet or necklet with your child’s medication information, at no cost. For more information, please pick up a brochure in the school office. PEDICULOSIS Although it may seem early in the school year, we would like to bring to your attention a problem which occurs from time to time in each school. The problem is infestation by head lice (Pediculosis). Unfortunately, in recent years, head lice have become increasingly common throughout North America. They are parasites which have been common among human beings for centuries. They are not connected in any way to dirt or neglect. Anyone can be infested. In order to control these pests, we shall follow these procedures and request your full cooperation. If cases are found in the classroom, we shall inform parents in that class. We would request that you check your own children and if you find them to be infested, we would ask that you inform the school, and the Peel Public Health Department for treatment information. If your child does become infested by head lice, we will ask you to keep your child out of school until after they have been treated with the correct shampoo and their hair is entirely clear of both lice and nits (eggs). Students will not be permitted to return to class until they have been checked by the office. If we all cooperate in these procedures, we may not entirely escape outbreaks, but we will be able to bring them under control more quickly. For additional information, guidance, and any questions, please contact Peel Public Health Department at 905-799-7700. As well you may find the following website useful www.headlice.org. INDOOR SHOES The weather is beginning to change and we remind everyone of our school procedure, which encourages an extra pair of running shoes to be kept at school for indoor use. Not only does this promote good health and comfort, it helps keep the classroom floors dry and clean, for everyone’s benefit. KISS ’N RIDE We are always looking for dedicated parent volunteers to make our Kiss ‘N Ride program run smoothly. We want to ensure a safe arrival and departure for our students. We want to thank the parents that use the Kiss ‘N Ride for following the guidelines as set out in the September newsletter. Please note that the morning Kiss ‘N Ride program will not begin before supervision begins in the yard at 8:45 a.m. Please note that it is extremely important that parents drive slowly and cautiously while on school grounds. The lane closest to the curb is for BUSES ONLY. The Kiss ‘N Ride land is the middle lane. Please follow the procedures outlined below when using the Kiss ‘N Ride lane: Drive your vehicle in this lane and proceed to the furthest point closest to the orange Kiss ‘N Ride traffic cone. STOP Children must exit and enter your vehicle by the passenger door(s) Drive to the end of the Kiss ‘N Ride lane and cautiously proceed into the Drive-Thru lane Do not park or idle in the Kiss ‘N Ride lane. Do not walk across the Kiss ‘N Ride lanes. If you need to enter the school, please park your vehicle in the school parking lot or on the street. PICTURE RETAKE DAY Picture retakes will take place on November 3rd. If your child was not at school on Picture Day, they will have their individual pictures taken on November 3rd. Also, if you were not satisfied with the pictures taken on Picture day, you may have your child’s /children’s pictures retaken. SMILE! Many resources are utilized from our regional health units. A reminder, as well, that communicable diseases can be contracted in public places throughout the year. For example, coldrelated viruses, such as Enterovirus, are transferred from person to person through hand contact. Cold and flu viruses typically peak from December through February, but can start as early as October. Regional Health Unit Resources Please assist us by reviewing good hand washing procedures, as well as other preventative measures, as outlined in the various Peel Health and Wellington Dufferin Guelph (WDG) resources available to you through their websites. As always, children who are unwell, should be kept at home. Flu Clinics Also available on the Peel Health and WDG websites, are the schedules of local Flu Clinics. ELEMENTARY PROGRESS REPORTS For more information, visit the health unit websites: Elementary Progress Reports will be sent home on Tuesday, November 17th. The Elementary Progress Report is designed to show a student’s development of learning skills and work habits during the fall of the school year, as well as a student’s general progress in working towards the achievement of curriculum expectations in all subjects. The Progress Report is not a formal Report Card. Students will not be receiving letter grades indicating achievement of overall expectations. As a result, an interview with parents is not mandatory during the Progress Report period. First term report cards will be sent home on February 2nd and first term interviews will take place on February 4th. It is expected that all students will be participating in the interview process at that point. Reminders and Resources: Cold and Flu Season As cold and flu season approaches, the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board continues to be vigilant in ensuring that our schools are clean and that our school communities are educated regarding good hand hygiene and cough etiquette. These practices are promoted on an ongoing basis, but as the prevalence of colds and flu increases, our board increases the cleaning of contact surfaces, as well as reminds TERRY FOX RUN/WALK UPDATE This year, once again, St. Gregory School students and staff organized and participated in the annual Terry Fox Run/Walk. We are very pleased to report that we raised $2700.00 in donations brought in through the school office. In addition, funds may have been raised through online donations! We thank you all for your support of this worthy cause. Terry would have been proud! CATHOLIC SCHOOL LEARNING PLAN (CSLP) Each year schools are required to set goals in each of the school board’s 5 Shared Priorities (Key areas): Catholic Community Culture and Caring, Pathways, Teaching and Learning, Professional Learning and Leading and Outcomes (progress for all learners). These 5 key areas aim to reduce gaps in student achievement, increase overall student achievement and increase public confidence in education. Our St. Gregory staff have set goals in each of these key areas. Numeracy, specifically the expected practice of the 3 part math lesson, and further developing our Catholic Community, Culture and Caring are our main focuses. Please visit our school website to view the entire CSLP. As all of us know, bullying awareness and prevention efforts are items of great concern and play a large part in the life of Dufferin-Peel Catholic school. A list of activities that will be held will be sent under a separate cover. WOWBUTTER Please keep in mind that sending peanut butter substitutes to school where students have peanut allergies is discouraged for the following reasons: 1) If a child with a life-threatening peanut allergy sees it, they may experience anxiety and/or physical panic reaction as a result of visually seeing the WOWBUTTER, or at minimum, the child and his or her family members may have safety concerns about the product being in school; 2) It can create significant challenges for teachers, and especially students, to identify real peanut butter from the substitute; 3) If one student sees another with WOWBUTTER, they may believe it is peanut butter and may take the message home that it is acceptable to bring peanut butter and may bring their own peanut butter to school as a result; and, 4) The presence of this look-alike can create potential circumstances of bullying/threats toward student with lifethreatening peanut allergies. Thank you for your attention to this important matter. ST.
