Prayer Before the Thanksgiving Meal
Blessed are you, Lord our God, creator of heaven and earth and Father of our Lord
Jesus Christ:
We praise you for your glory and thank you for your goodness to us.
We praise you for your generous gifts and for bringing fruitful results to our labours.
And we rejoice in your kindness, we pray also for those who are in need. Open our
hearts to them and teach us to be as generous to others as you are to us.
Bless this food we are about to eat and those who have prepared it.

FAITH LIFE
Virtue of the
Month: Empathy
This month we will focus
on the virtue of Empathy.
Judge your neighbour’s
feelings by your own and
let every matter be
thoughtful. To live the
virtue of empathy is to
not judge people because
we never know what
others are holding in
their hearts. Always try
to be a good friend to
others. An empathetic
person listens when
people speak, notices
when someone is upset
and tries to help, can see
a
situation
from
another’s point of view
and accepts that others
have
different
perspectives.
Judge your neighbours’
feelings by your own and let every matter be thoughtful.
There are days in our lives that we may see others come
to school sad, afraid, frustrated or even angry. To live the
virtue of EMPATHY is to not judge those people because
we never know what others are holding in their hearts. In
your everyday life try to remember that you may not
always understand what others are feeling, but you can
always be a good friend.
“...for I was hungry and you gave me food. I was thirsty and
you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you
welcomed me, I was naked and you gave me clothing, I
was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you
visited me.” Then the righteous will answer him: Lord,
when was it that we saw you hungry and gave you food, or
thirsty and gave you something to drink? And when was it
that we saw you a stranger and welcomed you, or naked
and gave you clothing? And when was it that we saw you
sick or in prison and visited you?” And the kind will answer
them, “Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least
of these who are members of my family, you did it to me.”
Matthew (25: 35-39)
If you can’t feed a hundred people, then feed just one.
Mother Teresa
Life’s most urgent question is: what are you doing for
others?
Martin Luther King, Jr.
Can you think of a time when your friend came to school sad
and you helped to make them happy?
OUR CATHOLIC SCHOOL HERITAGE
Was there opposition to separate schools before
Confederation?
Yes, as now, there were advocates of one school system.
Protestant spokespersons believed in the adequacy of the common
(now public) school’s basic non-denominational Christianity, which
constituted an important element of the common school’s religion
lessons and their readers. They held that beliefs specific to certain
religions should be taught in the churches and homes.
Why did Catholics find the non-denominational
religious education of the common school
unsatisfactory?
Catholics wanted separate schools where all the beliefs of the
Catholic Church would be taught, where the pupils would live
their faith in a sacramental and community manner in proximity to
the parish church and priest, and where religion would permeate
the reading, literature and history curriculum. Furthermore, as
modern times arrived, the multiculturalism of the public school’s
student body necessitated the eradication of the teaching of
Christianity.
What sacrifices did Catholics have to make to
send their children to separate schools?
Because the United Legislature of Canada East and Canada West
roughly had consisted of members advocating non-denominational
common schools and half were in favour of them, separate school
legislation, for about fifteen years, contained three obstacles to
their existence:
A) Catholics could establish and support a separate school, but
had to continue paying common school taxes. Thus, they paid
tuition for their children in the separate school;
B) The separate school had no permanence of existence. If the
local common school board hired a Catholic as one of its
teachers, then the separate school ceased to exist. Separate
schools kept opening and closing in the early years;
C) In the cities the separate school board required the
permission of the common school board to open a new or an
additional separate school. Sometimes the permission was not
forthcoming.
The legislation required twelve Catholic heads of family resident
within a city, town or township common school section. The
townships’ common school sections were so small that often there
were not twelve resident Catholic families.
ON CARE FOR OUR COMMON HOME
LAUDATO SI - POPE FRANCIS
Pope Francis’ latest Encyclical on the environment invites us to be
‘Stewards of the Earth’.
(Excerpt)
“Now , faced as we are with global environmental deterioration, I
wish to address every person living on this planet.” With these allencompassing words, Pope Francis lays out his vision in On Care
for Our Common Home (Laudato Si), his encyclical on the
environment and interconnectedness of all creation.
The pope speaks to the “ecological crisis” of our time
but also reminds each of us that “hope would have us
recognize that there is always a way out, that we can
always redirect our steps, that we can always do
something to solve our problems.”
OFFICIAL CHURCH TEACHING
An encyclical is a “circular letter” containing
authoritative papal teaching. Laudato Si is a social
encyclical, meaning that it teaches about the state of
society, building on a tradition that began with Pope Leo
XIII’s Rerum Novarum in 1891. What’s new in Laudato
Si is that Pope Francis says that concern for the
environment is no longer “optional” but is an integral
part of the Church teaching on social justice.
OUR COMMON HOME
Pope Francis pulls no punches when he writes that the
earth “cries out to us because of the harm we have
inflicted on her”, saying that “the earth, our home, is
beginning to look more and more like an immense pile
of filth.” He laments atmospheric pollution, a warming
climate, a lack of clean water as well as the privatization
of water, a loss of biodiversity, and an overall decline in
human life and breakdown of society. “Never have we
so hurt and mistreated our common home as we have in
the last two hundred years,” he adds.
He is equally critical of responses to the crisis made
from a position of privilege and comfort, which often go
hand in hand with a “green” rhetoric. One example is to
reduce poverty and the
ecological crisis by reducing
the birthrate. Another is the
belief that “ecological problems
will solve themselves simply
with the application of new
technology and without any
need for ethical considerations or deep change.”
To be continued…

STUDENT AGENDAS
All students in grades 1 - 8 have received a student
agenda. This is an excellent tool to help keep your
child organized and on track with all homework and
assignments.
Students should be bringing their
agenda home nightly and maintaining it on daily basis.
The St. Gregory School Council has generously
provided agendas for all grade 1-8 students. We
thank them for supporting this valuable organizational
tool for our students. Please
read the information pages in
the front of the agenda and
sign the area designated for
parent signature.
The
replacement cost will be
$5.00 each.
KISS ‘N RIDE
For those parents who use the Kiss ’N Ride program
we would like to review the process. The traffic flow
through our front parking lot is one-way only. The
entrance is clearly marked with three lanes. The lane
closest to the building is restricted for school buses
only. The centre lane marked: Kiss ‘N Ride is
reserved for the delivery of students. The third lane
is reserved for free flowing traffic. When the
program is in operation, a large orange cone will be
present beside the Kiss ’N Ride lane to indicate
where to stop your car and let your child(ren) out.
This lane is for parents who, without getting out of
their vehicle, wish to drop off their child(ren).
Children must have their knapsacks and belongings
with them, they should not be getting things from the
vehicle’s trunk, as this is not only unsafe, but also
slows down the Kiss ‘N Ride
process. Children must exit from the right side of
the vehicle, on their own, and proceed towards the
school on the walkway.
Following afternoon
dismissal, parents who wish to pick up their children
should enter the Kiss ‘N Ride lane and wait in their
car for their child to board their vehicle from the walkway
beside the Kiss ‘N Ride lane. Again, as a safety measure,
students must enter the vehicle from the right side only. If
your child is delayed in leaving the school, please continue
along the Kiss ‘N Ride and park your car on the road. You
may then enter the school and locate your child. There is
no teacher supervision for the afternoon Kiss ‘N Ride. If
you are using the Kiss ‘N Ride in the morning or the
afternoon, it is imperative that you never leave your car
unattended. As an ECO School, we are asking that you do
not idle your car. Please note that the morning Kiss ‘N
Ride program will not begin before the yard supervision at
8:45 a.m.
If you are interested in volunteering during the Kiss ‘N
Ride, please let the office know. Parents please do not
leave your car unattended in any of the three Kiss ‘N Ride
lanes at any point in the school day, most especially at lunch
time. If you are dropping off a lunch for your child please
park in a designated parking spot or on the street. A
reminder that the gate will be closed from 8:45 - 9:00 a.m.
and from 3:30 - 3:45 p.m. each day. There will be no access
to the north parking lot or the Daycare at these times. The
gate is for the safety of all our students.
EARLY TO BED...EARLY TO RISE
Getting enough sleep is crucial to school success with
academics, attitude, behaviour, social adjustment, effort,
contentment and well-being.
Research indicates that
consistency in this routine is extremely important for
success at school.
AFTER SCHOOL SECURITY
Students must be diligent in gathering all materials prior to
the end of the school day. Once dismissed, there is no
supervision provided to the students. Students/parents
must not be returning to school after school hours to
retrieve books/belongings. In order to ensure the safety of
the workplace, no students or parents will be able to enter
any classroom after school.
Thanksgiving Food Drive
As we approach Thanksgiving, St. Gregory School is
holding its annual food drive. Thanksgiving is a very
special time of the year when we as a school community collect non-perishable food items to help
those who are in need in our own local community.
We will be collecting these items between October
1st - 16th. Please be generous with your donations.
It is important for all of us to be grateful for all we
have to show this by acknowledging those less fortunate.
God bless!
MANY, MANY THANKS!
To our gardener, Mrs. Mark, for her diligence, talent
and perseverance in maintaining our front gardens
and keeping them looking their best! You are truly
an example of a “Good Steward of the Earth”.
Thank you for all your efforts!
AROUND THE HALLS
REPORTING ABSENCES
If your child/children are going to be absent or late
for school, we ask that you call the school office and
leave a message (905) 814 - 5237. Please press 1 for
our attendance line. Let us know on a day to day
basis if your child will continue to be absent. As a
safety precaution we will always try to contact
parents by phone if we have not received any
messages. Your continued cooperation is greatly
appreciated.
STORAGE OF MEDICATION
We would like to remind all parents who had
medication stored at the school for their child to
send in new medications and the proper forms for
storage will need to be filled out for the new school
year.
WEBSITE
Please visit our website! The
site is
www.dpcdsb.org/grego. All school information,
all forms, and parent information are updated
regularly. All previous and current newsletters are
on the site. Every month you will find exciting events
and information posted. Our web-site is another
excellent tool to keep parents connected to what is
happening at school.
TERRY FOX WALK
On September 30th the St.
Gregory community participated in
our annual Terry Fox Walk. This
year commemorated the 34th
Anniversary of the Terry Fox
Walk.
When the students
returned to the school, the
students received an apple
provided by our Catholic School Council. This year,
we raised over $2 700. Thank you for your
generosity.
CROSS COUNTRY
The St. Gregory Cross Country Team for 2015 has
been finalized. They will compete at the Mississauga
Brampton Central Family Meet at the end of
October at Terry Fox Park (previously known as
Chinguacosy Park) on October 16th. The Board Cross
Country Meet will take place at Centennial Park on October
26th. Thank you to our coaches: Mrs. Herter, Ms. Kelly, Ms.
Moreira, Ms. West, Ms. Pizzardi and Ms. Roberto. Go
Grizzlies Go!
SPECTATORS AT GAMES
A reminder that only students who are directly supervised by
their parents or another adult will be
allowed to be in the gym during our
scheduled games. Students may not
bring in notes granting permission to
watch these events. Our coaches are
present to coach the students on the
team and are not responsible for
supervising other students. We welcome all spectators to
cheer on our teams within the parameters of the policy.
HEALTH AND SAFETY
SCHOOL YARD SAFETY
Thank you to all parents who have been so conscientious in
dropping off and picking up their children in front of the
school. It is important for us to know all the adults who are
in the schoolyard. To all children, other than your own, you
are a stranger. All parents, siblings attending other schools or
any other visitor must report to the office upon arrival at the
school. Never go directly to your child’s classroom without
having checked in at the office. All students are dismissed
from the entrance doors that exit to the school playground.
Student supervision begins at 8:45 and students must not be
dropped off at the school before this time.
ANAPHYLACTIC SHOCK
Please be aware that there are a number of
students at St. Gregory with a
food allergy (anaphylaxis) to
peanuts, nuts and fish. This is a
medical condition that causes a
severe reaction to certain
allergens and can result in death within minutes.
Although this may or may not affect your child’s class directly,
please send foods with your child that are free from peanuts,
nuts and/or fish. Thank you for your understanding. Students
are not allowed to take any food or drinks out for recess
because of the possibility of bee/wasp stings.
MEDICAL CONCERNS
If your son/daughter has any medical concerns, please ensure
that you inform the school . Information may be shared
directly with the classroom teacher or with the office. All
information is held in confidence. Parents are responsible for
ensuring that all medication and forms are updated annually
for any students who require medication to be administered
at school. If your child requires medication, please have the
necessary forms (including R.E.A.C.T.) completed and returned, along with any medication to the office as soon as
possible. This is Board policy. Thank you for your cooperation.
SIDE GATE
A reminder that the gate to the Best Start Daycare and
side parking lot is closed everyday from 8:45 - 9:00 a.m.
and from 3:30 - 3:45 p.m. NO vehicles will be allowed in
or out during this time period. The safety of our student is our number one concern!
EMERGENCY PROCEDURES
We have a detailed fire/emergency evacuation policy. We
will be practicing evacuation procedures 3 times during
the fall and again 3 more times in the spring. In addition,
we be reviewing and practicing “Lock Down” procedures.
Students are reminded that they must wear shoes in the
school building at all times. If the fire alarm goes off, students will not be permitted to stop to put on shoes,
coats, hats, etc. Their safety is our first priority.

LITERACY AND NUMERACY FOCUS
PUPIL ACCOMMODATION REVIEW POLICY PUBLIC CONSULTATION
The Ministry of Education released the new Pupil Accommodation Review Guideline (PARG) in March 2015. This
guideline sets expectations for all school boards on managing and reviewing underutilized school space, including
potential school closures, and for the greater coordination and sharing of planning related information between
school boards and other community partners.
The guideline requires all school boards in the province to
develop or revise Pupil Accommodation Review Policies
and to invite public input into the policy before it is finalized.
A survey to collect feedback on the Dufferin-Peel Catholic
District School Board’s draft amended Policy 6.51 Pupil
Accommodation Review will be available for review and
comment on the Board’s website at until 4:30 pm on Friday, October 16, 2015. Supporting documents will also be
available for reference and review. Please consider reviewing and providing input on this policy.

EMERGENCY PROCEDURE DRILLS
In accordance with Ministry regulations, we will conduct
three fire drills this fall. While we hope that a real fire
never occurs, this practice helps prepare students in the
event of a real fire. In addition we have scheduled a
lockdown practice that will take place the third week of
November. This procedure is intended to prepare students should a high risk incident occur on school property or in the near vicinity.
EMERGENCY EVACUATION CENTER
Students have been involved in emergency evacuation
procedures/fire drills practices at the school. You may
want to review rules and practice evacuation procedures
with your family at home. Our emergency evacuation
center is Britannia School. Please ensure that the office
always has the most up to date home and work phone
numbers, addresses and emergency contact names and
phone numbers.
As part of our Catholic School Learning Plan, two of the
main areas we will continue to focus on this school year
will be literacy and numeracy. We have our Special Assignment Teacher: Mrs. Secko-Voutianitis working with
our primary staff on literacy and numeracy assessment
and three part math lesson. Over the course of the
school year, all teachers will continue to incorporate cooperative problem solving into their daily literacy and
numeracy blocks.
LUNCH POLICY
We have a large number of students eating lunch at
school and often children need to be reminded of proper behavior while eating. We ask for the parents’ cooperation in reinforcing with your child(ren) appropriate
lunchtime behavior.
Students are expected to:

Remain seated while eating

Not to share food (Sabrina’s Law re: allergies)

Chat quietly with their friends

Dispose of all garbage/recyclables and clean prior to
leaving
Following these rules will make eating at school safe and
enjoyable for all.
