Dear Family: As the partnership between home, church, and school is valued and important, this letter is written to inform you that our Grade One classes will begin lessons as part of our Family Life program that will provide additional opportunities for students to practice a range of life skills. Within this context, students will also be learning about different kinds of touch. The purpose of this research-based program called I Matter! is to build and strengthen the skills and abilities that lessen children’s vulnerability to abusive situations. The Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops in their document “Breach of Trust - Breach of Faith” speak specifically to the role of the Catholic school in teaching children about child abuse prevention within the context of curricula that addresses the broader subject of human sexuality and life values. The I Matter! unit consists of supplementary lessons which will be presented by your child’s teacher. The Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board is implementing this program in Grade One beginning 20132014. The material will be taught in an age-appropriate manner within the context of the “Fully Alive” Family Life program and the Ministry of Education’s Health curriculum expectations. Using a series of children’s picture books, the basic concepts covered are: self-esteem communication making choices respect different kinds of touch how and where to get help Recognizing that you, the parents and/or guardians, are the primary educators of your child(ren), you are always encouraged to discuss the learning in the classroom with your child(ren).
