Plot – identify the main events that occur in the chapter than are MOST significant -walking up the mountain -hunt a pig -finally get to the top of the mountain -Jack saw beastie first -Ralph went up with him -the 2 boys both saw the beastie together Themes – write out quotations that significantly develop important themes (civilization to savagery, loss of identity, destruction of innocence and idealism, the power of fear, power and authority, etc.) Loss of innocence, violence, treachery, betrayal, savagery, loss of civilization, transformation, change, lust for power, realization, conflict, primitivity, fear, youth, survival This chapters shows the transition into the savage life that the boys are now living. It also puts the pressure on Ralph as the leader, even more than before. Because of the tension between Jack and Ralph, Ralph has to make better decisions not just for him, but for the better of the entire group “the ground was turned over near the pig run and there were droppings that steamed. Jack bent down to them as though he loved them.” On page 112, this shows loss of civilization because it shows how they are becoming less civilized and they now find things normal that once would not want to do. CHAPTER Character Development - write out any significant quotations that reveal a change in character. Indicate what the change is and how it is relevant to the text. “”I hithim,” said Ralph indignantly. “I hit him with my spear. I wounded him.”” This quote from Chapter 7, page 116, shows that even Ralph, who is one of the remaining civilized boys, can unleash your inner savage. In the quote Ralph says that he wounded the pig and by hunting with the savage boys we is wounding the little bit of civilization within him. “That was a good game.” In chapter 7, page 117, Jack says this and it shows how low their state of mind is at this point in the novel. They do not value the lives of animals and it foreshadows that they will not value each others lives later in the book. Says “It was a good game.” The character start to not value animals lives and it foreshadows that they will stop valuing human lives. “the desire to squeeze and hurt was overmastering” page 117, shows that Ralph is starting to become like the hunters, he is not with piggy, joins in their “game”, when he is in a different environment, the temptation of him losing civilization becomes stronger “they were dirty... the skin of the body, scurfy with brine” page 112 transformation of the boys becoming savage “he would like to have a pair of scissors and cut his hair” represents civilization Literary Devices and Symbols – identify and write out sentences that contain SIGNIFICANT devices that contribute to mood, irony, or might act as foreshadowing, e etc. 7 Z. “Kill him! Kill him” on page 117, Robert was struggling to kill the pig, symbolizesforeshadowing bc later on they kill simon and piggy “And the darkness and desperate enterprise gave the night a kind of dentist’s chair unreality.” On page 124, they compare the night as to being in a dentist chair. In a child’s perspective, they would usually dread going to the dentist and feared the dentist itself, so it shows that the boys were scared A symbol that we found in Chapter 7 is the pig. It symbolizes their innocence or civilization that the boys are trying to kill, which creates a solemn/somber mood
