Communication binders will be coming home daily. It really helps when you fill them out.
Use the newsletter to expand on our school day by asking what your child did. When they say
I don’t remember you can use the information in the newsletter to guide answers.

Welcome to Westlake Class of 2029! Westlake Schools' Kindergarten Information Session will
be held Tuesday, Feb. 2, 6:30pm in each neighborhood elementary school building. Plan to
attend at your neighborhood elementary building:

years old on or before Aug. 1, 2016, to be eligible to enter kindergarten.
For those AM students who have mastered the identification of their first name (and can
identify the letters) we are finding our seat in circle by locating our last names! I evaluate if
they can identify the letters of their name by showing them the letters in random order. I
have found that sometimes they memorize the order of the letters but can’t really identify
them. The PM students are finding their seat by their addresses.
Reminder: Library is on Wednesdays.
No school Monday January 18th in observance of MLK Day. No School on Tuesday January
19th due to teacher records day.
Teddy Bear Party Thursday, January 21st. Please have you child wear their pjs and bring
their favorite teddy bear to class.

We will be exploring winter in many different ways. We will learn about what some animals do
during the winter (hibernate). We will explore what special activities we do during winter. We will
also explore the concept of opposites winter/summer, day/night, sun/moon.

Large Group/Language Activity: The Way I Fell by Janan Cain. Find words that share
the same beginning sounds. During reading we will look at the vocabulary words
shaking, soaring, frown, growl, and drags.
Small Group Activity: bear patterning
Tuesday:
Pawsitive Tuesday! Wear your Big 3 shirt or green or white.
Circle Time: calendar/weather/review jobs, discuss our day, choose a song from song
chart, review class rules, & choose a play area. Play “Where is Teddy?”
Large Group/Language Activity: Read Frozen Noses by Jan Carr List all the activities
that can be done in winter. We will graph our favorite winter activity.
Small Group Activity: matman
Wednesday: Circle Time: calendar/weather/review jobs, discuss our day, choose a song from song
chart, review class rules, & choose a play area. Read The Honeybee and the Robber by
Eric Carle. The story will first be presented by reading the book and then reread
using props. The students will be evaluated using story sequencing cards.
Large Group/Language Activity: Read All About Hibernation by Tori Kosara. We will
develop our own definition for hibernation.
Thursday:
Circle Time: calendar/weather/review jobs, discuss our day,
choose a song from song chart, review class rules, & choose a play area. Hibernateyes/no chart.
Large Group/Language Activity: Miss Karen’s Language Lesson
Small Group Activity: matching alphabet mittens

measure each of our teddy bears and compare. Hibernate-yes/no chart.
Large Group/Language Activity: Miss Karen’s Language Lesson
Small Group Activity: measure our bears
