In December the liturgical season of Advent is here, the time in our faith that tells us all to prepare for the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ. Alternative School # 905-890-0708 Press 7 then 54200 During the four weeks of Advent we prepare our hearts and our lives so that we may be able to fully celebrate Christmas. The Advent wreaths are a point of gathering in our school and a candle is lit before our morning school prayers. When you are going to be away call the school each day On Friday December 10 we gathered as a school community to celebrate the Eucharist at our school Advent mass. The choir sang and the students read the words that “Christ is born!” We are indeed a very special school community comprised of supportive parents and families. This together with our dedicated students and a devoted staff give us much to be grateful for. But we know that among this community there are some of us who are not as blessed as others but we are all part of God’s family and this school community. Tradition continues with our Canadian Tire coupon for toys program and Christmas food drive. I am aware of the names of families with children who will benefit from our blessings and generosity and because of that I know will have a brighter Christmas. Our recent Christmas concerts were like an extra present under the tree for all who were able to join us. May the joy and peace of Advent and Christmas be with you and your family today and all through the year. Mr. Romanet PAGE 2 Attendance Verification The flu season is here. We need your help in making our attendance verification program work effectively. Please call and leave a message on the answering machine or call the secretary if your child will be absent. This will assist us, as the secretary often has difficulty reaching parents or guardians to confirm absences. Your co-operation is greatly appreciated. Call the tape at 905-846-2086 to leave your absence information. PLEASE NOTE: WHEN BUSSES ARE CANCELLED WE STILL NEED TO ACCOUNT FOR YOUR CHILD—PLEASE CALL THE SCHOOL IF THEY ARE STAYING HOME Winter Safety in the School Yard In order to avoid injury and to help ensure student safety, students are reminded regularly to play safely in the school yard. Students are reminded not to throw snowballs, or kick snow, as well as to stay off snow hills and off any ice patches. Play fighting and contact sports are not allowed. Students are reminded to report problems to the teacher, Operation Christmas Child Operation Christmas Child is a fun and simple, hands-on project of Samaritan’s Purse that anyone can participate in. Each gift-filled shoe box is used to bless the life of a child living in a desperate situation. This year St. Leonard students filled 27 boxes to send overseas to children in fifteen countries. Thank you to Mrs. MacCormack’s class for organizing the shoe box drive and to the parents and students for so graciously giving of themselves to this worthy cause. Thank you to the School Council for paying to ship the boxes overseas. In December we will learn about the Virtue of Hope. We’ll learn about how a person of hope keeps working for a more peaceful world even when we feel discouraged, and helps others to feel positive and hopeful, instead of negative or afraid, which is particularly meaningful during Advent. Winter Weather At times we receive requests to allow student to stay indoors when they have a cold, flu, etc. Please note that we are unable to comply unless we have received a doctor’s note since we do not have the staff or facilities to supervise these students. If a child is too ill to go outside for recess, we request they remain home until they are healthy enough to join in the regular activities of the school. On extremely cold days, when the wind chill equivalent temperature is minus 20 degrees Celsius or lower, students will stay inside as per Peel Health Department guidelines. Punctuality School begins at 8:30 a.m. It has been noted that there are a number of students who arrive late to school. Whenever a student is not here in time to line up with their class during entry, they are considered late. It is also a disruption to the class if students walk in after class has started. Whenever a student is late she/he must go to the office to obtain a late slip. Arriving on time is a life skill which our students need for future success. Please ensure students arrive on time. Junior Kindergartens already attending St. Leonard do not have to re-register. Campbell’s Labels for Education We continue to collect labels from various Campbell’s products. The UPC labels, or lids are collected in a special container in the main foyer of the school. We thank you for your continued support. For a full list of eligible items, please check out the School Council section of our webpage. On behalf of the Staff and Students of St. Leonard School we wish you the peace and joy of the Christmas season PAGE 4
