Moving Reminders Monday, May 23rd is Victoria Day— there is no school for students Monday, June 13th is a Professional Activity Day—there is no school for students. Phone Troubles From time to time our phone lines go down due to computer troubles. If you are unable to reach us using our normal number, please contact us 905-890-0708 ext 54200 1 If you will be moving at the end of the year and your child/children will be attending a different school, please call the office as soon as possible and request transfer papers. You will need to take transfer papers when you register at your new school. This will also assist us, as well as your new school in making plans for accommodation and staffing of the school. Sun Safety Virtue of the Month—Acceptance The effects of the sun can be detrimental. We encourage parents to have their children wear sunscreen and hats during the sunny weather. Lightweight protective clothing, which covers the skin, is suggested by the Health Department. The virtue of acceptance describes our ability to look at the attitudes and actions of those around us and then just stop and consider without judging them. The virtue of acceptance means that we look beyond what we see—a person’s skin colour, ethnic background, religion, age, gender, sexual orientation, and see a person created and loved by God. Toys/Games/Cell Phones/IPODs, Etc. Please be advised the school is not responsible for valuable items brought to school. Anything of value should be kept at home. If your child brings a ball to school, please make sure their name is clearly marked with a permanent marker. A reminder that as per school board policy, if a parent wishes to have their child bring their cell phone to school, the cell phone must be off and out of sight at all times. The school and the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board assume no responsibility for any PED brought onto school property. Playground Equipment Safety Every spring and fall, the creative playground equipment in the school re-opens for student use. As with all activities, we remind students regularly about safe practices while playing in the yard. Please review the following safety tips with your children who may be using our playground equipment, or park equipment. Remove drawstrings/lanyards No sitting on top of the monkey bars Stand clear of others Slide feet first Slide sitting upright Wait your turn Use two hands when swinging or climbing Tie shoelaces Do not take skipping ropes to the playground equipment area No flip flops No pushing or rough play Report problems to staff Do not use the creative playground if no supervisor is present The Region of Peel compiled these safety tips. You can access more information on their website: www.region.peel.ca Punctuality School begins at 8:30 a.m. It has been noted that there are a number of students who arrive late to school. Whenever a student is not here in time to line up with their class during entry, they are considered late. It is also a disruption to the class if students walk in after class has started. Whenever a student is late she/he must go to the office to obtain a late slip. Arriving on time is a life skill which our students need for future success. Please ensure students arrive on time. 2 Summer Dress Code Campbell’s Labels for Education Warm weather has arrived. We would like to remind everyone of our dress code. As a Catholic school, we believe that there must be a commitment to high standards of modesty, neatness, cleanliness and clothing, which is appropriate for the school-learning environment. The school is our workplace. Therefore, while halter tops, tube tops, short short skirts, muscle shirts and similar clothing may be acceptable for beach wear, they are not appropriate for classroom instruction. Shorts should be a reasonable length. Any tops that expose bare midriffs are inappropriate. Due to numerous injuries to feet and toes, we ask that students do not wear flip flops. We ask for your support in assisting students to make appropriate clothing choices. Your co-operation is asked if we need to contact you in the event your child is required to change their attire. Suggestive or inappropriate language or violent symbols/slogans are not permitted on clothing. We continue to collect labels from various Campbell’s products. The UPC labels, or lids are collected in a special container in the main foyer of the school. We thank you for your continued support. For a full list of eligible items, please check out the School Council section of our webpage. Lunch Hour Rules Students who stay for lunch are supervised as they eat in their classrooms and then play outside on the yard. It is our expectation that students remain on school property. Students in Grade 7 and 8 who bring a parental note may leave the property. It is expected that these students conduct themselves in an appropriate manner while off the school grounds. Students must not bring food back for siblings or friends to eat on the school grounds. Students who do not represent St. Leonard Catholic School well will have the privilege of leaving at lunch hour removed. If students leave the school without permission, parents will be notified and consequences will be given. Parents are requested not to allow students below Grade 7 permission to go to the local mall at lunch hour. Safety is a concern as Sandalwood Parkway is extremely busy and younger children without supervision may be at risk. Your cooperation in this matter is greatly appreciated. Note: Clothing that is acceptable for a primary age student may not be appropriate for a junior/intermediate student. A little more latitude is given to younger students. (A flyer outlining specific Dress Code Guidelines is posted on our website in the General Information section) Safety-Bicycles, Skate Boards, Scooters & Roller Blades Bicycle season has arrived and we remind students of the importance of following all traffic safety rules. Students are reminded that bicycles must be walked onto the school grounds and parked at the bicycle rack. All bicycles should be chained and locked at the rack. Unfortunately even bicycles can be quickly removed by determined thieves. It is suggested that expensive/hard to replace bikes remain at home as the school cannot be responsible for stolen or damaged bikes. Also, a reminder to parents that the law requires that all children wear proper bicycle helmets. Scooters, skateboards, and roller blades are not permitted on school property. Popsicle/Ice Cream Orders Popsicle orders are due to the office by 9:00 a.m. on Friday May 27th. Please make sure to write your child’s name and teacher’s name on the order form (we omitted a spot for that). Popsicles are for each of the Fridays in June, the 3rd, 10th, 17th and 24th. 3 First day of classes elementary and secondary schools Last day of classes Semester 1 Secondary (Semester Schools Only) First Day of classes Semester 2 Secondary (Semester Schools Only) School Year ends Elementary and Secondary Schools Number of school days for the 2011 – 2012 school year Number of Instructional Days in Elementary Schools Number of Instructional Days in Secondary Schools Number of Professional Activity Days in Elementary Schools Number of Professional Activity Days in Secondary Schools Tuesday, September 6, 2011 Tuesday, January 24, 2012 Friday, February 3, 2012 Friday, June 29, 2012 194 188 188 6 6 School Holidays for the 2011-2012 School Year Every Saturday and Sunday Labour Day Thanksgiving Day Christmas Break (inclusive) Family Day Mid-Winter Break Good Friday Easter Monday Victoria Day Monday, September 5, 2011 Monday, October 10, 2011 Monday, December 26, 2011 to Friday, January 6, 2012 Monday, February 20, 2012 Monday, March 12, 2012 to Friday, March 16, 2012 (inclusive) Friday, April 6, 2012 Monday, April 9, 2012 Monday, May 21, 2012 Elementary Schools – Professional Activity Days 1.
