EQAO Provincial Assessments Virtue of the Month—Love Administration of the Grade 3 and 6 Assessment of Reading, Writing and Mathematics, 2009-2010 will be held May 31 to June 11, 2010. Specific dates will be forthcoming. We ask that parents/ guardians do not book any doctor or dentist appointments during this time to ensure that your child is present during test taking. This month we will celebrate the virtue of love. 1 A Loving Person… Wants the best for others Is willing to make sacrifices for the good of others Learns from the heroic lives of saints and holy people Knows that we are all lovable Prays for others Punctuality Planning for September 2010 In order for the school to plan effectively for September, we will be arranging students into tentative class groupings in the near future. We group children so that there are a variety of academic levels in each class. Teachers meet by grade level with the school administration and support staff to review the needs of each student. Some of the criteria are: Balance of girls and boys Health concerns Teaching styles Learning styles Enrichment needs Remedial needs Social factors If you have a request based on the above considerations, please forward it in writing to your child’s teacher by April 30, 2010. Requests for specific teachers will not be honoured. All staffing and class placements are tentative until September enrolment is finalized. Please keep in mind that combined grade classes are a fact of school life and all students will have this experience from time to time. Changes in staff can take place between now and September. School begins at 8:30 a.m. It has been noted that there are a number of students who arrive late to school. Whenever a student is not here in time to line up with their class during entry, they are considered late. It is also a disruption to the class if students walk in after class has started. Whenever a student is late she/he must go to the office to obtain a late slip. Arriving on time is a life skill which our students need for future success. Please ensure students arrive on time. 2010-11 School Year Calendar The school year calendar for 2010—2011 will be included in one of our newsletters, following ministry approval. Homework is a key way for your child to learn independent, lifelong skills. Giving answers regularly or doing homework for your child does not help him or her to understand concepts or develop skills. As well, it prevents the teacher from understanding where your child may require further support back in the classroom. If your child demonstrates signs of frustration with the homework being assigned, it is important to discuss this with your child’s teacher as soon as possible. Please continue to check out our website www.dpcdsb.org/LENRD. Some of our teacher’s are piloting classroom homework pages. We have the third most frequented site in the school board. If you are interested in receiving mail electronically, please contact the school office. We have 237 of 360 students currently receiving electronic mail. Join the movement—go green... Bussing Eligibility for 2010—2011 The board has implemented a new software to determine eligibility for bussing. The link is on the school website in the right column on the main page listed under ―Bussing Eligibility‖. Please check your ―Transportation Eligibility‖ in the summer to see if you are eligible to ride next year (just because you qualified this year does not mean you qualify next year). Please note: the school board will not allow any courtesy rider seats until October. Flex Boundary A reminder to those parents who do not live within the boundaries of St. Leonard that you must request ―Flex Boundary‖ permission each year. Please send your request letter to Mrs. Lunn by April 30th.
