The Junior Girl’s basketball team had a very
successful season. In the Family mini tournament the girls ended up in first place with 3
wins in regular play. They lost a close championship ending up in second place. The girls
worked very hard and showed determination
and enthusiasm.
The Junior Boys basketball team are having an
awesome season. The boys won the Family mini
tournament with 5 wins. The Boys moved on to
the Family Tournament played on Tuesday, April
26th. The boys were silver medalists, qualifying
them for the Board finals to be held in May. We
wish them the best of luck.

On April 22 St. Leonard’s Green
Team lead the student body through a
Liturgy to thank God for the beautiful
world he created for us, and to
remind us that we must do our part to
be good steward’s of the land. Along
with prayers, the students performed
songs and skits that they wrote, and
dropped pebbles into water to
symbolize the simple things we can do
to take care of the earth. After the
Liturgy the Green Team members
planted seeds.
On April 23 Green Team members
sold ice cream sandwiches to raise
money to sponsor four endangered
animals through WWF Canada. The
Green Team would like to thank all of
the teachers, students and families
who supported the ice cream
sandwich fundraiser. It was a great
success because St. Leonard students
are committed to making a difference!

ensure that your child is present
during test taking.

Moving
Playground Equipment Safety
If you will be moving at the end of the year and
your child/children will be attending a different
school, please call the office as soon as possible
and request transfer papers. You will need to take
transfer papers when you register at
your new school. This will also
assist us, as well as your new
school in making plans for accommodation and staffing of the
school.
Every spring and fall, the creative playground equipment in
the school re-opens for student use. As with all activities, we
remind students regularly about safe practices while playing
in the yard. Please review the following safety tips with your
children who may be using our playground equipment, or
park equipment.
Remove drawstrings/lanyards
No sitting on top of the monkey bars
Stand clear of others
Slide feet first
Slide sitting upright
Wait your turn
Use two hands when swinging or climbing
Tie shoelaces
Do not take skipping ropes to the playground equipment
area
No flip flops
No pushing or rough play
Report problems to staff
Do not use the creative playground if no supervisor is
present
The Region of Peel compiled these safety tips. You can access more information on their website: www.region.peel.ca
Sun Safety
The effects of the sun can be
detrimental. We encourage
parents to have their children
wear sunscreen and hats during
the sunny weather. Lightweight
protective clothing, which covers the skin, is suggested by the
Health Department.
Toys/Games/Cell Phones/IPODs, Etc.
Virtue of the Month—Acceptance
Please be advised the school is not responsible for valuable
items brought to school. Anything of value should
be kept at home. If your child brings a ball to
school, please make sure their name is clearly
marked with a permanent marker. A reminder that
as per school board policy, if a parent wishes to
have their child bring their cell phone to school,
the cell phone must be off and out of sight at all times. The
school and the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board
assume no responsibility for any PED brought onto school
property.
The virtue of acceptance describes our ability to look at
the attitudes and actions of those around us and then
just stop and consider without judging them. The virtue
of acceptance means
that we look beyond
what we see—a person’s skin colour,
ethnic background,
religion, age, gender,
sexual orientation,
Welcome to Kindergarten
Parents of students entering Junior Kindergarten in
September 2010 and their registered child, are invited to
join us for a Welcome to Kindergarten orientation session. This session will help your child prepare for school.
Participants will also receive a kit of learning materials
that will assist in their child’s preparation for the upcoming school year. This session will be held at the school
on Tuesday, June 1st
(new date) from 6:30 to
7:30 p.m.
Grade 8’s to Ottawa
Our grade 8 students will be
touring the capital on May 5, 6
and 7th. We wish our students
a safe and enjoyable trip.
Thank you to Mrs. LaFontaine, Ms. McQueen and
Ms. Downey for organizing the trip.

Punctuality
Summer Dress Code
School begins at 8:30 a.m. It has been noted
that there are a number of students who arrive
late to school. Whenever a student is not here
in time to line up with their class during entry,
they are considered late. It is also a disruption
to the class if students walk in after class has
started. Whenever a student is late she/he
must go to the office to obtain a late slip.
Arriving on time is a life skill which our students need for future success. Please ensure students arrive
on time.
Warm weather has arrived. We would like to remind
everyone of our dress code. As a Catholic school, we
believe that there must be a commitment to high standards of modesty, neatness, cleanliness and clothing, which is appropriate for the school-learning environment. The school is our workplace.
Therefore, while halter tops, tube
tops, short short skirts, muscle shirts
and similar clothing may be acceptable for beach wear, they are not appropriate for classroom instruction. Shorts should be a
reasonable length. Any tops that expose bare midriffs are
inappropriate. Due to numerous injuries to feet and toes,
we ask that students do not wear flip flops. We ask for
your support in assisting students to make appropriate
clothing choices. Your co-operation is asked if we need
to contact you in the event your child is required to
change their attire. Suggestive or inappropriate language
or violent symbols/slogans are not permitted on clothing.
Safety-Bicycles, Skate Boards, Scooters & Roller
Blades
Bicycle season has arrived and we remind students of the
importance of following all traffic safety rules. Students
are reminded that bicycles must be walked onto the school
grounds and parked at the bicycle rack. All bicycles
should be chained and locked at the rack. Unfortunately
even bicycles can be quickly removed by determined
thieves. It is suggested that expensive/hard to replace
bikes remain at home as the school cannot be responsible
for stolen or damaged bikes. Also, a reminder to parents
that the law requires that all children wear proper bicycle
helmets. Scooters, skateboards,
and roller blades are not permitted on school property.
Note: Clothing that is acceptable for a primary age student may not be appropriate for a junior/intermediate
student. A little more latitude is given to younger students. (A flyer outlining specific Dress Code Guidelines
is posted on our website in the General Information section)
Lunch Hour Rules
Students who stay for lunch are supervised as they eat in
their classrooms and then play outside on the yard. It is our
expectation that students remain on school property. Students in Grade 7 and 8 who bring a parental note may leave
the property. It is expected that these students conduct themselves in an appropriate manner while off the school grounds.
Students must not bring food back for siblings or friends to
eat on the school grounds. Students who do not represent St.
Leonard Catholic School well will have the privilege of leaving at lunch hour removed. If students leave the school without permission, parents will be notified and consequences
will be given. Parents are requested not to allow students
below Grade 7 permission to go to the local mall at lunch
hour. Safety is a concern as Sandalwood Parkway is extremely busy and younger children without supervision may
be at risk. Your cooperation in this matter is greatly appreciated.
