A MESSAGE FROM THE TRUSTEE
A MESSAGE FROM THE PARISH PRIEST
Thank you for Choosing a Dufferin-Peel Catholic
Education
Dear students, parents, guardians, staff, administration
and friends of our school communities here at St. Patrick’s.
Greetings and blessings to all of you.
A few more weeks of school left, and another academic
year is over. I give thanks to God for all that this past
year has entailed. The joys that have been shared. The
learning that has occurred. The friendships that have
been created. Yes, even the challenges that have been
faced and overcome thanks to the love and care of
friends and neighbours.
No doubt we are all the wiser, thanks to what the school
year has provided for us. Our end of the year mass with
each of the schools will help us focus on the most important
of all lessons we can learn in life: the love of Jesus for
each one of us. With a special reflection on the Sacred
Heart of Jesus, that the month of June invites us to consider
(especially Friday, June 12 this year, Feast of the Sacred
Heart), each child will receive a medal of the Sacred
Heart of Jesus. We hope and trust they will treasure this
little gift as a reminder of how much God loves us. As the
various schools inform you of the date and time for their
final school mass of the year, I hope many of you will join
us in worship.
As I wish you a blessed, joyful and safe Summer, it is my
hope that these months ahead will provide for us an
opportunity to enjoy family, friends, and lots of fun. I look
forward to continue seeing you at our Sunday liturgies.
For those who may not be aware of our Sunday Mass
schedule, here it is again:
 Saturday, 5 p.m. English Mass
 Sunday, 8:30 a.m. & 10:00 a.m. English Masses
 11:30 a.m. Italian Mass
 1 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. English Masses
Dear Parents and Guardians:
It seems that, all of a sudden, summer weather is upon us
and so, incredibly, is the end of the 2014-15 school year.
As we reflect back over the year, we can see that it was,
in fact, a very successful year for Dufferin-Peel students in
terms of achievement, success and well-being. With
steadily rising EQAO scores, matching or surpassing the
provincial standard and averages in most assessment
areas, and graduation rates that are among the highest in
the province, this board continues to be defined, in part,
by our high levels of success and achievement. Yet, we
are much more than that. Our commitment to helping each
student fulfil their potential, through the Ontario Catholic
School Graduate Expectations, means that our students
graduate with the tools to become good, solid contributing
members of the communities in which they will live.
As trustees, we see the contribution of dedicated teaching
and support staff, administrators and senior management
working together with trustees facilitate conditions that we
can to facilitate success. We also see, firsthand, the
important role of our parents/guardians, working in
concert with the school and the parish in fostering
conditions for success and well-being.
So, as we complete the final leg of the journey that is the
2014-15 school year, we thank parents/guardians for
choosing a Dufferin-Peel Catholic education for your child
(ren) and for entrusting them into our care. It is a
responsibility for which we are grateful and one that we
cherish very much. To our students, thank you for all you
have done to contribute to the life of your school. For
those who are graduating and moving on to postsecondary education or the world of work, may God
continue to go with you and bless you on your journey. To
our returning students and families, we look forward to
seeing you in September.
Blessings and best wishes for a peaceful and restful
summer.

In July I will be leading a pilgrimage to the shrine of Our
Lady of Lourdes in France with a large number of
parishioners. There I promise to remember you, your
families and your needs, in my prayers.
Blessings to all,
Fr. Vito.

OFFICE PRO PLUS FOR STUDENTS
What Did You Teach Me Today?
When you pick me up in the bus zone,
In a hurry to be on your way,
Or tell me to j-walk across the street,
What did you teach me today?
When you stop your car in the middle of the street,
So I’m on time for school that day,
And disregard the school patrollers,
What did you teach me today?
Microsoft Canada has released a program for our
students giving us the capability to download the
Microsoft Office Suite entirely free of charge. As a Board
that is eligible for this program, students can download
the full Office product across PCs and Macs, iPads,
Android tablets, iPhones and Android phones as no cost
for use at home and in the classroom.
This process is entirely supported by Microsoft and given
the value of this initiative to students we hope you will
make full use of the program.
Microsoft has taken this step to build on a longstanding
commitment of Microsoft to education and helping equip
students in and outside the classroom to realize their full
potential and benefit of these tools. Also, Microsoft
recognizes that in today’s environment, barriers that
separate students from such tools – whether they be
technical or financial – have to be overcome. By making
Office for students free of charge, the barrier is being
removed and allowing students to select the technology
platform they want based solely on preference.
By providing access to the tools our students have what
they need to succeed both at learning and preparing
them to enter the workforce.
SPORTS ZONE
Good luck to our students who are competing in the Track
and Field Meet at St. Marcellinus on June 11, 2015.
Thank you to Mrs. Marsi, Mrs. Sasso, Mr. Sette and Ms.
Trentin for organizing, supervising and coaching our
school Track & Field events.
Good luck to the girls and boys on our soccer teams who
will compete in the family tournament on June 9 and 16,
respectively. Thank you to Mrs. Stewart and Mr. Talamo
for coaching the teams.
When you park in the handicap stall,
To get “the parking spot of the day”,
And disrespect the person who needs it,
What did you teach me today?
I know that you truly care about me,
And the other kids on their way,
But when you break the traffic laws,
What did you teach me today?

very safe, healthy and relaxing summer and we look forward to seeing you in September!
WARM WEATHER REMINDERS
Sun exposure:
Over exposure to the sun can cause skin damage. Students are reminded to take precautions
to protect the skin. Some recommendations to reduce the effects of sun damage are:

Wear protective clothing to cover the skin and a hat to protect both the eyes and skin

Wear sun block (the higher the protection factor number, the greater the protection)

Stay away from direct sunlight when possible

Know your skin type: fair skinned people burn easier
Appropriate Dress:

Shorts and skirts should be the appropriate length for school (e.g., longer than the length
of your arm and hand when held at the side of your body)

Shirts should be of appropriate length to be able to be tucked into pants or a skirt - no
midriffs or belly buttons should be showing

Bra straps should not be visible and the width of shoulder straps on tops should be at least 5 centimetres wide

Tight, revealing and/or spandex clothing is not acceptable

Muscle shirts, halter tops, tank tops, tube tops and tops with spaghetti straps are not permitted

Flip flop shoes should not be worn to school - they are a tripping hazard, especially on the stairs

Shirts with offensive, suggestive or inappropriate slogans, language or pictures are not permitted

students for all their hard work. and for representing our school.
ECO CLUB
Another year has come to an end and the Eco-Team has had a busy year! It has been filled
with amazing eco-initiatives and participation from the OLOL community. Most of our
activities are done, however on June 3rd we will be celebrating Clean Air Day. We are
encouraging everyone to walk or wheel to school. Our Eco-Team will be at the front of the school with refreshments and
music playing to celebrate this event. During the month of June we will also continue Walk or Wheel -to-School
Wednesdays, Take Back the Trash Thursdays and Flick-off Fridays to encourage the students to make these initiatives
important in their daily life at Our Lady of Lourdes.
SPECIAL THANKS… We would once again like to thank Mrs. Millson for her assistance and expertise in gardening. Our
Eco-Team has been busy with Mrs. Millson weeding the front gardens during the month of May. Thank you in advance to
the families who will be involved in maintaining the garden during the summer months; we appreciate your continued
support to our school. Last but not least, a very BIG thank you goes out to all the Our Lady of Lourdes Eco-Team students
who have continuously been involved in various eco-initiatives this year and for being stewards of God’s earth. Thank you
to our students on the ECO team. A special thanks to the grade 8 students who will be graduating this year and moving
on. We wish you all the best in high school, and we hope you continue to be stewards of the earth and advocates for
sustainability. Have a wonderful summer and remember to be eco-friendly!

HEALTHY EATING RECIPE OF THE MONTH
Make-Your-Own Kabobs
Children often like to eat their own creations. Here are some ideas for children to make their own kabobs. The idea is to
have several different ingredients on hand. Children can mix and match the ingredients to make their very own kabobs.
Kabob sticks can be sharp. Close supervision of young children is required. As an alternative, you may want to use thin straws.
Here are some ideas of foods that you may want to have the children choose from:
 grapes
 peaches
 cherry tomatoes
 green, red, yellow, or orange pepper
 pears
 cucumber slices
 apples
 cubed meat (e.g. kielbasa, chicken breast)
 orange wedges
 bananas
 canned mandarin
 cheese cubes (different varieties of cheese)
oranges
 melon balls
 kiwi
Soak the kabob sticks in water to soften and prevent splitting. Cut foods into half-inch chunks or wedges. Have children
choose their favourite foods and help them thread their chosen foods onto a soaked kabob stick. Enjoy!
Preparation Time: 15-25 minutes, Equipment: paring knife, cutting board
