Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Elementary School 25 Mount Royal Circle Brampton, Ont. L6P 1W3 Phone (905) 913-1703 FAX (905) 913-2918 May 2013 VIRTUE FOR MAY The virtue of Acceptance means we accept ourselves and others. God created all of us in His image, and God does not make mistakes. Being a part of God‘s family means that we love and welcome everyone just the way Jesus did. Sometimes we find ourselves in situations where it is easier to follow the crowd than to stand up for what we know is right. Jesus wants us to accept everyone even when it is hard. IN HONOUR OF MARY We celebrate the Crowning of Mary and the Rosary this month. Mary, the mother of Jesus, exemplifies humility, kindness, love and acceptance. She is a silent yet strong role model for us all to emulate. We honour all mothers on Mother's Day which we will celebrate on Sunday, May 12. Lord God, you have given us life And guided us on our journey. Be with us as we honour Mary In song and prayer this month. We turn to you for protection, Holy Mother of God. Listen to our prayers And help us in our needs. Save us from every danger, Glorious and Blessed Virgin. Amen Principal Sonia Rotino Secretary Mary Doria ~ Superintendent Max Vecchiarino Trustee Scott McLauchlan Parish Priest Father Papais CATHOLIC EDUCATION WEEK: GROWING TOGETHER IN FAITH Catholic schools are Catholic communities. Catholic schools are faith communities. We – parents, students, teachers, administrative and support staff – walk and grow together in the faith which we received at our Baptism. And it is together that we grow. Our growth is primarily a relationship with God, who at our Baptism, called us by name. We grow in our faith in the nurturing atmosphere of our Catholic community, be that of our local parish, our home, or our Catholic school community. Our school community will celebrate Catholic Education Week 2013 from May 5 to 10, 2013, in ways that are appropriate to our students‘ age. We invite you to participate in one or more of these activities if your personal time and work schedule may permit. There are five sub-themes for each day of Catholic Education Week: Monday – Faith that is Rooted, Tuesday – Faith that is Nurtured, Wednesday – Faith that is Discerned, Thursday – Faith that is Witnessed and Friday – Faith that is Celebrated. We hope to see many of you during our school celebrations. SACRAMENTAL DATES Sacrament of Confirmation The grade eight students will be receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation on May 29, 2013 at St. Patrick‘s Church at 7:00 p.m. Visit our School Website: www.dpcdsb.org/lourd Our Lady of Lourdes JUNIOR BASKETBALL The Junior boys and girls basketball teams competed in the mini pod tournament on Wednesday, April 24 at Holy Spirit School. Earth Month Recap Earth Month was a huge success at Our Lady of Lourdes. Thank you to everyone who donated clothes, electronics, and a helping hand during the Spring Cleanup of our adopted park and school grounds. Also, a special thanks to the entire Eco-Team for their continuous help with various ecoinitiatives and for being stewards of our earth. School Ground Greening Project As we are approaching the end of school, we are also approaching gardening season. A grade 8 student has created a beautiful design for our school ground greening project, which includes a butterfly garden. In the next few months, with the help of Our Lady of Lourdes students and the school community, we will be putting the design plans into action. Waste Audit Results On March 19th, Brampton Clean City visited our school to help our Eco-Team complete a waste and recycling audit to make sure we were sorting our garbage and recyclables correctly. The Eco-Team noticed that a great deal of items in our garbage bins are compostable. In order to reduce our school waste we will be continuing our Earth Month initiative ―Take Back the Trash Thursdays‖ (boomerang lunches) for the remainder of the year. See the school website for boomerang lunch tips. March 2013 Audit Results: 21% of our garbage was properly placed 86% of our recycling was properly placed FROM THE LIBRARY EQAO Our Lady of Lourdes will be hosting a Book Fair during Education Week from Monday May 6 to Thursday May 9. NATIONAL DENIM DAY As babies, we know that life is NOT about SITTING – it‘s all about WALKING! But as we get older, why do we STOP WALKING and spend so much time SITTING, even though we know we should be more active? WALKING: It‘s free, low impact and can be done year round. JUST A FEW of the BENEFITS of WALKING: Reduces stress and improves your mood, clears your head and improves your focus, helps you sleep, boosts your immune system, reduces the risk of diabetes, contributes to a healthy heart, slims you down and can be done as a family activity. So get out there and take that first step! From the Lunch Lady We encourage all students to wear jeans on Tuesday, May 14th, 2013, for the seventeenth edition of National Denim Day in support of the CURE Foundation for breast cancer. Thank you for caring! Staff will be wearing jeans on this day as well in return for a donation to the Foundation. WEARING JEANS HAS NEVER BEEN SO IMPORTANT IMPORTANT! DRESS CODE With the warm weather approaching, we would like to take this opportunity to review dress code expectations at Our Lady of Lourdes. Shirts should be of appropriate length where they can be tucked into pants or a skirt. No midriffs or belly buttons should be showing. Shorts and skirts should be the appropriate length for school (e.g., longer than the length of your arm and hand when held at the side of your body). Suggestive or inappropriate language or violent symbols are not permitted on any clothing or personal belongings. Sunglasses, hats, (including bandanas worn as head covering) are not to be worn inside the school. Tight and/or revealing clothing is not acceptable. Bra straps should not be visible and the width of shoulder straps on tops should be at least 5 cm wide. We appreciate your support.
