To begin the new school year, we will
focus our attention on the first of our ten
virtues – faith.
Faith is the great virtue of believing in
God and trusting that God is with us.
A faithful person believes that we are
created, guided by and destined to be
reunited with God.
A faithful person believes that God’s
plan for us includes the right to be safe,

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
On behalf of the staff of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Elementary
School we’d like to welcome everyone to the 2011-2012 school year.
We hope you have had a restful and relaxing summer with your family
and friends.
As we begin a new school year in our brand new school, we look forward to opportunities to build a caring school community and establish
traditions and programs for our, students, staff and parents.
Our school’s motto ‘Our Learners, Our Leaders’ is linked to the many
opportunities students will have to take part in and be encouraged to
model their faith and leadership. We will pray to Our Lady of Lourdes to
inspire and guide us in making our school a welcoming place for all students to learn and become our future leaders and demonstrate the
many ways we share our Catholic faith and values.
We extend our best wishes to all for a successful school year; one filled
with new and exciting opportunities and one in which we can grow together in God’s image. We know that you will find our school community to be warm and inviting. We look forward to working with you and
your children.

STAFF FOR 2011 – 2012
POSSIBLE CLASS REORGANIZATION
Please find enclosed the tentative staff list and assigned
grades for 2011 – 2012. If there are no changes, this will be
the list for the year.
The Our Lady of Lourdes staffing for 2011-2012 is based on a
‘projected’ student enrolment that is calculated each spring.
This projected student enrolment number attempts to take
into account any new students who are moving into our
school as well as any students who may be moving out of the
area. There is a possibility of some class reorganization occurring on our P. A. Day, September 16, due to a difference
in our ‘actual’ versus the ‘projected’ student enrolment number. We will inform you in the event that any class reorganization is required.

ATTENDANCE VERIFICATION
Daily attendance and punctuality are
very important. If your child is going to
be absent from school, or late, please
inform the office at 905 913 – 1703.
LUNCH HOUR
During the lunch hour, all students who stay for lunch are expected to remain at school, and all students who go home for
lunch are expected to go home every day. If there is a change
in the regular lunch hour procedure for your child, parent/
guardians are asked to provide the teacher with a note explaining the change. A letter will be going home with your child
in regard to your child’s lunchtime arrangements. Please indicate your child’s regular lunchtime arrangements, sign the
form in the agenda and return it to the school as soon as possible.
DELIVERING LUNCHES
When delivering your child’s lunch to school please advise
your child in advance you will be doing so, and write his/her
name and teacher’s name on the bag. Your child can come
down at 12:10 p.m. to pick it up from the lunch table with minimal disruption to the class. The lunch table is located in the
hallway, outside the office. We would greatly appreciate your
co-operation in this matter.
CCAT TESTING
During the month of October, the grade 4 students will be administered the Canadian Cognitive Abilities Test. The results of
this test are used to identify students who may be eligible for
academic challenge programming. These tests will be conducted within the regular classroom environment.
STUDENT EMERGENCY INFORMATION
Your child will have received a copy of the Early Dismissal
Consent and Student Verifications form which contains your
address, phone numbers, emergency contacts and health
information as it currently exists in our computer. We ask that
you take a few minutes and look over this information to ensure that it is accurate. Please make any changes needed
directly onto the sheet and return it to your child’s teacher this
week. Please add area codes for all phone numbers. ALL
SHEETS NEED TO BE RETURNED TO THE SCHOOL as
soon as possible even if there are no corrections needed. It
is very important that we have accurate phone numbers and
emergency contacts.
EMERGENCY EVACUATIONS
Teachers and students regularly practice emergency evacuation procedures. These include: safe exits from the building
in the event of a fire, precautions in the event of a bomb
threat and safety actions in the event of an intruder. If an
evacuation of the school site occurs, our alternate location is
Mount Royal Public School, located at 65 Mount Royal Circle,
BRAMPTON, ON, L6P 2K4, PHONE: 905 794-4733.
VALUABLES
There is no place in the school to store valuable belongings.
Please do not allow your children to bring any valuables
(jewelery, money, hand held games such as Game Boys or
other electronic devices such as MP3 players or current
popular trading cards or toys), to school as we cannot be
responsible for their safekeeping. Telephones, cameras,
skateboards, roller blades and other expensive items should
not be brought to school. The school is not responsible for
lost or stolen items. If a ball goes over the fence or onto the
school roof, students are to tell the teacher on duty.
BEHAVIOUR CODE
For the safety of and well being of all students, it is necessary
to have a number of rules and expectations regarding acceptable behaviour in the school. There are expectations needed
for the classroom, which will be developed by the students
and teacher in each class. There are also school wide expectations set in the school Behaviour Code.
The School Behaviour Code is based on the code developed by the School Board in response to the Ministry’s
Safe School’s initiative. Students will be reminded about
the code during the month of September and at various
assemblies. We ask that you read through the Behaviour
code in the agenda with your child.

LOCAL WALKING EXCURSION FORM
AN IMPORTANT NOTICE REGARDING NUT ALLERGIES
In the agenda, please find the local walking excursions permission form which also needs to be signed and returned to
school so that your child can participate in local walks in the
neighbourhood and to the park.
We have several students in our school who have life threatening allergies to nuts, especially peanuts. We are asking
that you make Our Lady of Lourdes a peanut free school by
refraining from sending your children with peanut butter or
other products containing nuts or nut oils (e.g., nutella). If
these students come into contact with anything containing
nuts, nut oils or derivatives, it could be life threatening for
him/her.
VISITORS TO THE SCHOOL
All visitors and parents are requested to enter the building
through the front door, by ringing the red doorbell and then
going directly to the office.
Please sign in and obtain a visitor pass if you plan to remain
in the building for any reason during school hours. You are
not allowed in the playground while the children are outside.
Please understand that during instructional time, teachers are
not available to meet with you or to take phone calls. Messages will receive a prompt response. All messages or deliveries for students will be handled through the front office.
Students are expected to enter and exit through their designated doors.
These reminders are outlined for the safety, security and protection of staff and students in our school.
KINDERGARTEN YARD
All parents are asked to
bring their kindergarten
children to the gate of the
kindergarten yard before
school and to allow only
the children to enter the yard with teacher supervisors. With
the large number of students in kindergarten, we believe this
will allow more space and a safer environment for the children. Parents are welcome to remain by the fence outside of
the kindergarten yard if they wish. We ask for your cooperation in observing this procedure for the safety of the
children.
DISTRIBUTION AND STORAGE OF MEDICATION AND
EPI-PENS
If a child is required to bring medication to school, procedures
related to the administration of medication shall only be
adopted when:


requested by the parents/guardians; and when authorized by a physician; and
medication must be administered during school hours
If a designated staff member must administer medication,
signed request/authorization forms from the parents/
guardians and the supervising physician is initiated and/or
changed at the beginning of every school year. These forms
are available through the school office. The required authorization forms and the medication shall be delivered to the principal or designated person by the parents/guardians or other
responsible person. All medication with the exception of epipens & puffers will be housed in a safe location. Medication
must not be kept in the child’s possession (i.e. pocket, backpack etc.) or in the classroom.
Physical contact with these substances, even on a
second hand basis could be life threatening. For
example, a severe reaction may occur should the
child touch a desk, toy or book previously handled
by another student who has touched peanut butter, peanuts or peanut oil.
In our Catholic School Community we have an
obligation to be responsible for one another. Thanking you in
advance for your continued support, co-operation and understanding regarding this matter.
BUSSING
Students who are eligible
to take the school bus
should be waiting at bus
stops at least ten minutes
prior to the scheduled
bus arrival time. It is the
parent’s responsibility to
ensure that kindergarten children are met at the bus stop at
noon. Children who do not see a parent or babysitter will
remain on the bus and will be returned to the school to be
picked up there by the parent/babysitter.
CROSSING GUARDS
Please review the following safety information with your child.
Students must cross the road at the 3 way stops at Maisonneuve Blvd., or preferably, with the guard at Eiffel Blvd..
They should cross over to the west side of Maisonneuve
Blvd. or to the south side of Eiffel Blvd. before they cross Mt.
Royal Circle. in order to stay safe and not cross in front of
the drive ways leading into and out of the school grounds,
students are asked to cross on the south and west sides onto
the sidewalks that lead to the school grounds. If we work
together and teach the students where to cross, we can avoid
possible accidents..
Students should wait at the 3 way stops until the cars come to
a complete stop, look both ways before stepping onto the
road.
KISS AND RIDE TRAFFIC SAFETY
Our school driveway is a matter of great concern in regards to
the safety of our students. Therefore, we strongly urge you to
use the Kiss and Ride lane to drop off or pick up your child.
Kindly assist us in reminding children to use the walkways to
enter upon and exit off of school property.

SCHOOL YEAR CALENDAR
STUDENT ACCIDENT INSURANCE
The 2011-2012 School Year Calendar, which lists school
holidays, and Professional Activity Days for this school year
can be found in your child’s agenda for your future reference.
We shall keep you informed regarding the purpose and plans
for each of the P.A. Days throughout the year. You should
receive one school newsletter the first or second week of
each month. Periodically check with your child/children to
ensure they remember to show you school newsletters, bulletins, classroom newsletters and other items of information.
Our newsletters will also be posted on our website and emailed to those families whom have requested it electronically.
“The Board takes every precaution to
provide a safe learning environment for
students, but accidents can and do happen. Some families have private or
workplace accident insurance which is
able to respond to costs arising from
injuries. However, many families do not.
Under the Education Act, Ontario School
boards are empowered to:
“provide, by contract with an insurer under the Insurance Act,
accident and life insurance for pupils, the cost of which is to be
paid on a voluntary basis by the parents or guardians.” R.S.O.
1990, c.E.2, s. 176, par. 4.
STUDENT AGENDAS
We have provided every student from grade 1 to grade 8 with
an agenda for this school year.
Please ensure that you take note of your child’s student
agenda as it contains the school Code of Behaviour, expectations, serves as an invaluable tool to assist them with daily
homework planning, develops proper organizational skills and
good study habits. The agenda is also a daily means of communication between teachers and parents and a way to ensure that homework is being completed each night.
VOLUNTEERS
We encourage parents to volunteer their time if possible at
Our Lady of Lourdes School. We value your talents, experience, knowledge and skills.
Hot lunches, special events, trips and the All Star program
are programs that require volunteers. Please come to the
school to pick up the volunteer and criminal reference check
forms required. Once they’re completed, return them to the
school and Mrs. Iannucci will contact you. Thank you in advance for considering this opportunity to assist our students.
ALL STAR READING PROGRAM
With enough volunteers, we hope to implement the "All Star
Reading Program" this year. If your have two hours
a week for ten weeks to volunteer as an "All
Star Reading Coach", we would appreciate your time and efforts as a volunteer
Reading Coach. We encourage you to sign
up. For more information please contact
the school office and ask for Mrs. Iannucci.
CRIMINAL REFERENCE CHECKS
Parents are reminded of the Ministry and Board Policy that
requires all volunteers to provide the school with a valid
(dated within the last six months) Criminal Reference Check
before they can begin volunteering with students in the
school. For more information, please contact the school.
SCHOOL PICTURES
Picture day for all our students will be held on
Tuesday, September 27th, 2011.
The „Limited Plan‟ coverage for school days only can be purchased annually for $3.50 per child and includes a 10-year
dental benefit feature. Family discounts are available. Plans
can be purchased for post-secondary and mature students and
in some cases visitor or immigrant students. More complete
packages include 365 day per year coverage; the Super Plan
Plus has a travel component.
Student Accident Insurance is most commonly required to respond to dental injuries and for physiotherapy treatment.
Coverage may be purchased at any time during the school
year. As the cost is very competitive, it will remain the same
regardless of when it was purchased. The best value for parents exists in purchasing the insurance in September. Coverage becomes effective at the date of purchase”.
You may purchase coverage for your child at
www.insuremykids.com or by calling toll free at 1-800-463KIDS (5437).” Please direct your question to a Reliable Life
Insurance Representative.”
It is important for parents and guardians to understand that the
Board does not provide insurance for students against any
accidental death, disability, dismemberment or medical expenses that might occur as a result of accident during school
activities, including sports events and field trips.
P.A. DAY
Friday, September 16th, 2011 will be our first P.A. Day of the
year for students. This day will be dedicated to organizational
meetings, faith formation, goal setting and curriculum discussions for the new school year. There will be NO CLASSES
FOR STUDENTS ON THIS DAY.

ALLERGIES
Dear Parents / Guardians
Life threatening allergies, including anaphylaxis, can pose a very significant risk to student safety,
and in June 2005, the Ontario government passed Sabrina’s Law, which addresses issues affecting
students with life threatening allergies.
Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Elementary School is an allergen aware school. There are children in attendance who suffer from severe and life threatening allergies to certain foods, such as
peanut and nut products. Exposure to the smallest quantities can cause severe life threatening
reactions.
As part of our effort to reduce the risk for students with life threatening allergies, the staff
members of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Elementary School have been in-serviced in recognizing the signs and symptoms of an anaphylactic reaction and are aware of emergency procedures
in dealing with an anaphylactic reaction, which is a severe and life threatening allergic reaction.
The most common allergen triggers are food, insect stings, medications, exercise and latex.
Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Elementary School is also asking for your cooperation! Please DO NOT send any lunches or snacks that contain peanuts or
nuts, which could potentially harm a child. We would like to keep the classrooms
allergen free. In an effort to do so, any child that brings a lunch into the classroom that might
contain a life threatening allergen will eat their lunch in another location in the school designated
for that specific purpose. Please make sure that all of your children’s caregivers are aware of
this request.
We would also encourage you to bring non-edible treats for special occasions to share
with others in the classroom. There are many alternatives to bringing in food for birthdays and
special occasions. Some suggestions are: stickers, gift certificates, erasers, dollar store toys or
items. If you have any questions please talk to your child’s teacher or the school administration.
If you insist on bringing food, please be aware that upon entering the school you must attend
the office with your food treat and to ensure the food is free of allergens you must
supply a list of ingredients. A list of ingredients must also be provided to the classroom
teacher. Students with anaphylactic reactions will not share in the food without parental consent even if the ingredients are free of potential allergens and students with an anaphylactic allergy are encouraged to bring in their own treats for special occasions.
Thank you for your co-operation in making our school safe for all students.

seen using cell phones while at school, the cell phone will be
confiscated and parents will be contacted to come and retrieve
the cell phone and depending on the circumstances, students
may be suspended.
Students are encouraged to leave cameras, I-Pods, MP3 players and all electronic games at home. They are usually very

these materials. Your child’s teacher will explain our expectations in this matter.
Students are responsible for these textbooks and will be
asked to pay if these books go missing or have been vandalized. The cost of an average textbook is about $50
each. Please encourage your child to take care of textbooks!

Catholic Education in Ontario
ONTARIO’S CATHOLIC SCHOOLS go back as far as the 1600s. A formal system was established in 1841,
and the Scott Act of 1863 gave the Catholic community the right to establish and operate publicly funded
Catholic schools.
Since then, Catholic schools have made a tremendous contribution to the vitality and success of Ontario’s
education system, which ranks among the best in the world. Today, Ontario’s Catholic education system
consistently produces high levels of student achievement.
Further, graduates are taught the virtues and values of the Catholic faith – including community, responsibility, accountability, collaboration, caring and family – making them not just good students, but good citizens. ONTARIO’S CATHOLIC EDUCATION system is not a duplicate of other school systems.
While it adheres to Ministry of Education requirements, it does so from a Catholic perspective. The curriculum is enhanced by Gospel values. Teachers are professionally trained and committed to serving in
Catholic schools. At the heart of Catholic education is the person of Jesus. Faith development is integral to
every part of Catholic education, as students are called to respect the dignity of all human persons in a
caring community.
In the Catholic education system, home, school and parish form a vital partnership. Through participation
in the community and involvement with the parish, students are guided by the Gospel values, principles
and standards that reach into every facet of school life.
Hand in Hand, Heart to Heart,
We travel forth in learning and faith,
Carrying one another's burden in times of need.

2011-2012 School Enhancement Programs & Activities
Dear Parents/Guardians:
These are just some of the school presentations we have planned so far for this school year. We invite various artists, musicians, authors, and guest speakers to enhance the curriculum for our students, providing them with the opportunity to connect with various experiences. Some of the presentations we have booked or plan to book are listed
below. Other presentations may be added throughout the year. Parents are encouraged and welcome to attend
and will be reminded to attend via monthly newsletters.
October 6
Power of One – Anti Bullying
Grades K to 8
$685
October 31
Rapunzel (Literacy – Drama – Virtues)
Grades K to 4
$675
November
Freestyle Soccer – Character Building
Grades K to 8
$854
December 13 Blue Veil – Christian Rock Band
Grades K to 8
$960
April 11
Loretta Penny: Down to Earth: Ocean’s Alive
Grades 4 to 8
$881
May 1
Drum Clinic
Grades 3 to 8
$800
Through the fundraising efforts of our teachers and parent volunteers we hope to be able to help offset and share
some of the cost of most of these presentations. However, we still need to ask each student to contribute $25.00 to
help cover the rest of the cost and continue to provide all our students with a variety of presentations planned for the
year. This will eliminate us having to send a note home each time we have a presentation in order to collect $2 or
$3 from each student.
Please note that of the $25.00 we collect, a $5.00 portion goes towards covering the cost of the Agendas and a
$4.00 portion will to go towards supporting various outreach programs that our students will be supporting and participating in such as the Terry Fox Walk for Cancer, school Spirit Week Activities for ShareLife and the Knight’s Table Food Bank donations as part of our Catholic commitment. Please have your child return the bottom portion of
this letter to their teacher, along with the money by Monday, September 19, 2011. Families with more than two children may make a partial payment now, by sending half the amount & send a cheque post dated for Jan. 11, 2012 to
complete the rest of the payment owing.
Please note: participation in these enhancement opportunities and activities is entirely optional. Should you choose
not to have your child participate, alternative programming will be provided for your child.
Thank you for your support as we bring these valuable experiences to your children.
S. Rotino,
Principal
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------PLEASE RETURN THIS PORTION OF THE LETTER AND HAVE YOUR CHILD RETURN IT TO SCHOOL WITH
THE $25.00 PAYMENT. THANK YOU!
