Ascension of Our Lord Secondary School Mathematics Course Code: Course Name: Level: MHF 4U Advanced Functions Grade 12 University Prerequisite: Functions, Grade 11, University Preparation, or Mathematics for College Technology, Grade 12, College Preparation Course Overview This course extends students’ experience with functions. Students will investigate the properties of polynomial, rational, logarithmic, and trigonometric functions; broaden their understanding of rates of change; and develop facility in applying these concepts and skills. Students will also refine their use of the mathematical processes necessary for success in senior mathematics. This course is intended both for students who plan to study mathematics in university and for those wishing to consolidate their understanding of mathematics before proceeding to any one of a variety of university programs. Units of Study Unit 0: Get Ready Unit 1: Polynomial Functions Unit 2: Rational Polynomial Functions Unit 3: Trigonometric Functions I Unit 4: Trigonometric Functions II Unit 5: Exponential and Logarithmic Functions Unit 6: Combining Functions Required Equipment 1. 3 ring, loose leaf binder 2. Pencils and Pens 3. Scientific Calculator 4. Lined paper & graph paper 5. Erasers 6. A ruler Textbook: We will not be using a textbook for this course. You will be given handouts or packages of course material. It is expected that you take care of all of this material and replace it at your own cost if need be. Assessment and Evaluation The mark for the course will be based upon on-going or term work (70%) and a final assessment (30%) that includes only a final exam. The on-going or term work may include written assignments, reports, unit tests, and quizzes. Within the two areas, term work and final assessment, marks will be assigned using the four categories specified in the Ontario Curriculum Grades 9 to 12 Mathematics Education. Knowledge/Understanding 30% Knowledge of facts, technical terminology, procedures and standards Understanding of concepts Understanding of relationships between concepts Thinking 20% Thinking skills and inquiry design skills Identifying problems, planning, formulating questions, selecting strategies and resources Communication 20% Communication of information for different purposes Use of language, symbols and visuals Use of various forms of communication Application 30% Application of skills in familiar contexts and transfer of concepts to new contexts Application of procedures and technology Expectations of Students Students will be in complete uniform. The student is to be in the class when the bell rings, prepared to work with all required materials, including a calculator. Students are responsible for the booklets assigned to him/her throughout the course. If any booklets are lost or stolen, the student is required to replace the booklets at their own expense. The student is to keep a complete and organized notebook with dividers to separate units. Students are responsible for catching up on missed work and obtaining any notes/handouts. All work must be handed in ON TIME. Late assignments are not tolerated. Missed tests will be made up on the FIRST DAY back. Make-up tests will only be granted if a note for the absence is supplied. The student will initiate the process for extra help if required. Treat classmates/teacher the way you would like to be treated.
