Course Description: This course introduces students to communications technology from a media
perspective. Students will work in the areas of TV/video and movie production, radio and audio
production, print and graphic communications, photography, and interactive new media and animation.
Student projects may include computer-based activities such as creating videos, editing photos,
working with audio, cartooning, developing animations, and designing web pages. Students will also
develop an awareness of environmental and societal issues related to communications technology, and
will explore secondary and postsecondary education and training pathways and career opportunities in
the various communications technology fields.
Overall Course Expectations or Strands:
A. Communications Technology Fundamentals
- the interpersonal and communication skills necessary to work effectively in a team setting.
- core concepts, techniques, and skills required to produce a range of communications media products
or services;
B. Communications /technology Skills
- project management techniques to the planning and development of communications media products
- design process or other problem-solving processes to meet a range of challenges in communications
technology
C. Technology, the Environment and Society
-the impact of communications media technologies and activities on the environment and ways of
reducing their harmful effects
- social effects and issues arising from the use of communications media technologies and the
importance of representing cultural and social diversity in media productions.
D. Professional Practice and Career Opportunities
- safe work practices in communications technology activities;
- career opportunities in communications technology and skills, work habits, education, and training
required for entry into postsecondary programs or employment in these fields.
Efforts will be made to meet the individual learning needs of students to promote student success
with respect to meeting the expectations of this course.

Students will be using a variety of equipment
provided in-class for the course. These include:
iMac Computer, video camera, still digital
camera, colour printer.
Unit 1: Communications Models
Unit 2: Graphic Design
Unit 3: Animation
Unit 4: Photography
Unit 5: Video Production
Unit 6: Culminating Activity
Culminating Summative Tasks will be administered towards the
end of the course and will be weighted at 10% of the final
mark.
Any damage or loss incurred due to negligence
of the student will result in payment for
replacement.

Term Evaluations = 70% of the final mark. Final Evaluation = 30% of the final mark.
Final Evaluations will include: (final exam = 20% & CPT = 10%)
1. Feedback will also be provided for student learning skills. Working independently, teamwork,
organization, work habits/homework, and initiative are assessed apart from student achievement in
the four categories outlined above and will conform to the coding:
E – Excellent
G – Good
S – Satisfactory
N - Needs Improvement
2. Assignments submitted after the due date established by the teacher will receive a penalty in
accord with our Board Assessment & Evaluation Policy Document as outlined in the student agenda.
3. Should a student miss an evaluation due to a legitimate absence, in accord with our Board A&E
Policy Document, the student and teacher will make arrangements to address the missed
evaluation in a timely manner. In the cases of extended vacation or prolonged absence,
consultation with the appropriate administrator is required.
4. In the event that the student does not make up the missed evaluation(s), a zero may be assigned.
If it is determined that the evaluation(s) has/have been missed as a result of a skip/truancy or
has/have been plagiarized, a zero may be assigned.
5. For all other cases of absence and/or missed evaluations (including absence during the final
examination period), please refer to our Board A&E Policy as outlined in the student agenda.
