Citizen and Self – San Francisco
Citizen and Self in San Francisco
Foundational element of Honors can now be taken in San Francisco!
COURSES
Hon 251: Citizen and Self (Dr. Alex Olson)
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
This study away opportunity offers the opportunity to take Citizen and Self – the core required course of the
Honors College at WKU – in an intensive study away context in San Francisco. Through a public humanities
framework, we will explore the challenges facing everyday citizens in one for the most beautiful, diverse, and
complicated places in the United States. We commonly understand citizenship as a series of civic duties such as
voting, paying taxes, and serving your country. Citizen and Self expands this definition to include active
engagement with the social issues facing your community. In San Francisco, we will learn about the changing
demographics of the city and the problems of poverty, social inequality, and community organizing in a city that
for centuries has served as a crossroads of transnational migration.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES





Students will learn how to identify and critically engage with issues of democracy and citizenship
through the methods, concepts, and vocabulary of the public humanities.
Students will gain confidence in their ability to take on leadership roles in addressing major challenges
to democratic life, including issues related to the economy, gender, and racial, ethnic, and national
identity.
Students will learn about how to incorporate a range of sources and texts into their research.
In the context of the citizen professional framework – a central element of public humanities scholarship
- students will be able to articulate the ways that their intended careers can serve a public purpose.
Students will demonstrate competency in, and be able to explain the value of, the following skills:
interacting with the community beyond the classroom; writing clearly and convincingly for both
academic and public audiences; working in a team; taking part in and facilitating deliberations about
complex political and social issues; identifying common ground in the midst of conflict and competing
