Review: Hamlet
Elliot Lockshine
At 7:00 on Saturday March 7th, in the Westlake High School PAC, the curtains opened to an empty, but
eerie, stage. The play was set as two watchmen roamed the castle ground. This may sound like an ordinary play
about a prince, but trust me, it’s not. Hamlet, played by the wonderful Justin Godfrey, is going through a dark
time after his father’s death, and his uncle stepping up to the throne. When his best friends Horatio (Jenny Penegor), Bernardo (Amelia Dever) and Marcellus (Abe Ridha), discover the dead kings ghost, they rush to tell
Hamlet. With a series of lies, thoughts of madness, and acts of treason, Hamlet, while keeping track of his girlfriend Ophelia (Anna Parchem), and her father Polonius (Alan Garber), tracks down the ghost only to find out
that his father was murdered by the one and only: King Claudius (Jacob Kraft). Hamlet is overwhelmed and angry at both Claudius and his mother Gertrude (Lauren Racela). Although the play was very dark, the male and
female hosts (Nathan Bauer and Paola del Rincon Martinez), as well as the gravedigger and gravedigger’s assistant (Will Reilly and Deborah Parchem) stole the show with their comedy. I enjoyed the play very much and
hope to see it performed again at the Westlake High School PAC.
The 30th Annual Green and White Revue
Katie Cirincione
The 30th Annual Green and White Revue took place on March 21st and
March 22nd. The Green and White Revue is a talent show for all Westlake
students. This year’s show featured dancing, singing, piano, violin, and
more. The emcees for the show were Emily Lanning, Danny Phillip, and
Adam Othman. There were 37 performances in total, with two performances with students from LBMS. The show this year was very entertaining
and well-performed. Everybody can tell that Westlake has talent!

For the first time in five
years the Cavaliers have
made the playoffs. The
Cavs had a wild season
with many ups and downs,
but they got it together and
clinched the second seed
in the Eastern Conference
Playoffs. The 2015 playoff
slogan is “All In”. The Cavs
have begun the first round
against the Celtics with a
home win in game 1. They
continue the series tonight
in Cleveland, the Cavs are
looking to take a 2-0 series
lead.
The Cavs have an 87
percent of winning the series and a 21 percent
chance to win it all according to fivethirtyeight.com.
Many think the Cavs will
not win it all because of
their lack of playoff experience. Kyrie Irving has never played in a playoff
game, neither has Matthew Dellavedova, Tristan
Thompson, and Kevin
Love. Kyrie stepped up big
in his first playoff game
scoring 30 points and
shooting 5-5 from 3 point
shots.
This season has been
one of the best in Cavs
history. The team has the
most potential to win it all.
“We need to just take it
one game at a time” said
LeBron when asked about
the potential the team has.
Let’s hope they do and get
a championship.
During the first week of April, the 8th grade went to Hale Farm &
Village. Hale Farm is a historical facility that has educational programs for schools. Blue Team went on April 1st, and White Team and
Red Team went on April 2nd. The 8th graders participated in a simulation where they played the roles of escaped slaves trying to get to
Canada, where they would be free. The program was a fun and informational way to learn about fugitive slaves in the 1800s. Hale Farm is
also open to the public from June to August between 10:00 and 5:00.
The Hale Farm trip was a lot of fun and I hope that they continue to
offer this program in the future!

Spring time has finally arrived, which means baseball, playoffs and drafts.
First we have the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Cavs clinched a playoff
berth for the first time since the 2009-2010 season. As of April 18th, the Cavaliers are set to play the Boston Celtics in a 7 game series for the first round of
the playoffs. Tristan Thompson finished fifth in the 6th man award for the NBA.
Our next team is the Cleveland Indians. The Indians have finally started the baseball season on April 6th in Houston. On April 10th the Indians came
back to the newly renovated Progressive Field for their home opener against
the Detroit Tigers. The Indians haven’t started off to a good start with a 4-7
record, some of the cause is Indians catcher Yan Gomes who is out 6-8
weeks with a sprained MCL in his right knee. Another problem is Indians
starter Zach McAllister who has struggled to a 5.79 ERA.
The Cleveland Browns are getting ready for the 2015 NFL draft which is
on April 31st. The browns are trying to look for a defensive tackle after losing
Ahtyba Rubin who signed a contract with The Seattle Seahawks. The Browns
solved their Wide receiver problem by signing Dwayne Bowe from Kansas
City. They also solved their tight end problem after Jordan Cameron by signing Rob Housler who played in Arizona for 4 seasons.
Now that spring has finally begun, you can go outside, hangout with
your friends, and see your Cleveland sports teams!
Teacher of the Month (March) : Mr. Allan
Mr. Allan is the orchestra teacher at both LBMS and
DIS.
Students like Mr. Allan because of his humor and personality.
He plays the cello and the bass, but can teach all the
orchestra instruments: the violin, the viola, the cello, and
the bass, which is very impressive, and takes a lot of
skill.
People who have Mr. Allan as a teacher usually consider
him one of their favorite teachers, because he is very
caring about all of his students. He is kind to everyone
and always has something funny to say.
This is why Mr. Allan was selected to be the March
teacher of the month.

Should Foreign Language Be Required in High School?
YES
NO
The use of technology is increasing
rapidly, and because of this, we are
making contact with people around the
globe. Not all of these people speak
our language. America is behind the
rest of the world in learning a foreign
language. About 53% of Europeans
speak 2 languages, while only 18% of
Americans can speak two languages.
Europe has obtained this high percentage of bilingual people because
they start teaching foreign language
very early. In Europe, 60% of students
are learning a foreign language by
secondary school. Even though English is the 3rd most common language,
there are still 6,678,000,000 people
who do not know English.
If a person does not use a foreign language very often, the language is
easy to forget. Learning a foreign language takes a lot of time and effort,
and if the language is not used, that
time and effort goes to waste, especially if the students chooses a job that
does not require talking with people
around the world. Many students
would rather have another class
choice than having to take a foreign
language. Also, English is the 3rd most
commonly spoken language, with
322,000,000 speakers around the
globe.
Note: Only 8th graders at
Burneson were surveyed because they have already
made their high school class
choices and understand what
it is like to choose classes and
work around requirements.

Rocky River 27th Annual Jazz
Fest

th
On March 30 , 4 middle school jazz bands
came together at the Rocky River Middle
School for the 27th Annual Jazz fest. The festival featured 4 jazz bands, all at the middle
school level: Rocky River, Garfield, LBMS,
and Harding. Lee Burneson was scheduled to
go second in the program, and was to play five
songs. The jazz band met to warm up, until
finally it was their time to go on stage. They set
up on stage, and got used to the acoustics.
Compared to the others, our jazz band was
unique in that it included many clarinets and
flutes, but also a French horn and bassoon.
The five songs they preformed were very diverse, including Room 806 and Sharp Dressed
Man. Another song, Falling Water, was one of
only a few ballads played, and featured a wonderful solo throughout, played by Matthew Epple on trumpet. After their portion of the performance was over, LBMS received a plaque for
thier participation in the fest. The LBMS Jazz
Band then packed up their instruments, and
listened to the other jazz bands preform, hearing different styles and arrangements of jazz.
After the fourth band finished, congratulations
were issued to all, and the 27th Annual Jazz
Fest concluded.
