100% Participation
2004–2005 Annual Giving Campaign
Initiated in 1993, this program challenges and recognizes firms and companies (with at least five Virginia graduates) that achieve 100% participation in
annual giving. Because many firms and companies are in multiple cities, offices with five or more graduates are recognized in the program. Those interested
in achieving 100% participation should contact Helen Snyder ’87, Director of Annual and Reunion Giving, toll-free at 877-307-0158, or at hms4b@virginia.edu.

DEMOCRACY IN ACTION: THE LAW AND
POLITICS OF LOCAL GOVERNANCE
Hosted by the Journal of Law & Politics, the conference
convened experts from across the country to discuss the
implications of issues such as suburban sprawl and the
decay of urban centers, the privatization of public services
through homeowners’ associations, the viability of regional
governmental organizations, the effect of local government
actions on American constitutional principles, and the
innovations localities have made in responding to such
pressures.
BEYOND THE U.S. WAR ON TERRORISM:
COMPARING DOMESTIC LEGAL REMEDIES
TO AN INTERNATIONAL DILEMMA
6TH ANNUAL CONFERENCE ON PUBLIC SERVICE
& THE LAW
Founded by Law School students six years ago, the conference
brings together students, citizens, and lawyers to discuss
current public interest legal issues. This year’s conference
featured a keynote address by Nadine Strossen, the President
of the American Civil Liberties Union and a New York Law
School professor. Katie Redford ’95, co-founder and codirector of EarthRights International, delivered the opening
address. Conference panels and workshops covered asylum
law, gender-based violence, mountaintop removal mining,
judicial election campaigns, working as a lobbyist, and juvenile
confessions.
The conference, which has played host to more than
1,000 participants and 100 panelists since its inception,
draws students and speakers from across the country. A key
component to this conference is that there is no cost to register
and students attending from other law schools are offered free
housing with Law School students during their stay.
Participants heard from some of the world’s leading terrorism
experts, such as Paul Pillar, National Intelligence Officer for the
Near East and South Asia, and Ambassador W. Robert Pearson
’68, Director General of the U.S. Foreign Service and former
U.S. Ambassador to Turkey, who headlined a two-day symposium
designed to compare different countries’ legal response to
terrorism. The symposium was co-sponsored by the Strategic
Studies Institute at the U.S. Army War College and the John
Bassett Moore Society of International Law. Featured speakers
also included Ruth Wedgwood of the Paul H. Nitze School of
Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins University
and Fionnuala Ni Aolain, Director of the Transitional Justice
Institute at the University of Ulster in Northern Ireland, as well
as speakers from Lebanon, Israel, Pakistan, Chile, and members of
the U.S. Armed Services.
