Students will use increasingly sophisticated language in a variety of activities that will enable them to speak and write with clarity and accuracy. Students will also enhance their thinking skills through the critical study of literature, and continue to explore aspects of the culture of countries where the language is spoken through a variety of print and technological resources. Curriculum Strands and Overall Expectations: Oral Communication By the end of this course, students will: • demonstrate an understanding of brief oral messages, communicated in various situations and for a variety of purposes; • communicate orally in various situations and for a variety of purposes, using language appropriate to the level; • express opinions and ideas in prepared and open-ended conversations and discussions. Reading By the end of this course, students will: • read age and language-appropriate passages from different sources for a variety of purposes; • read, for comprehension of main ideas and expansion of vocabulary, selections from a variety of texts (short stories, fables); • read aloud with expression and accurate pronounciation; • identify and understand language conventions used in their reading materials. Writing By the end of this course, students will: • express ideas and opinions in a variety of written forms, demonstrating the ability to extract and analyse information from a range of sources; • compose and answer a variety of questions; • organize their writing so that ideas and information are clearly, logically, and coherently presented; • use correct grammar and appropriate language conventions in their written work appropriate to the level.
