Message from the Superintendent
We Educate for Excellence
Empowering all students to achieve their educational goals,
to direct their lives, and to contribute to society.
Thank you, Westlake! We are extremely appreciative of the tremendous support you show for
our students. This past school year Westlake City Schools’ students continued to demonstrate the
highest levels of excellence in academics, the arts, service and athletics because of hard work, the
support of an exceptional staff and our community’s insistence on excellence being the standard.
Resultantly, for the 12th consecutive year, our students performed at a level where the state
will recognize the district as Excellent on the State Report Card. W We are truly grateful for the
incredible community involvement in various aspects of our school district. You helped us develop
a solution to address our facility challenges and supported that vision with the passage of a bond
issue in May. We are excited about beginning Phase I of the Master Facilities Plan and the
opportunities this will provide our students. A new three-year Continuous Improvement Plan (CIP)
was developed this summer to set a vision for the future. More than 120 stakeholders took part in
an Education Summit to provide input on the plan, including members of our Chamber of
Commerce, civic organizations, higher education institutions, city leaders, Board of Education
members, parents, staff and students. We look forward to reaching the goals set within the strategic plan to build on our tradition of excellence. W Fiscal responsibility continues to be a district
emphasis. The Westlake City Schools were recognized for excellence in financial reporting for the 17th
consecutive year. For the second consecutive year the treasurer’s office and district were recognized
by the State Auditor for exceptional reporting and financial processes with a perfect audit.
The district continued to secure grants and partnerships to aid in achieving goals as well. An
additional $30,000 was awarded to the district for Science, Technology, Engineering and
Mathematics (STEM) programming and a number of regional businesses have provided our
students opportunities for internships and real problem solving projects. Additionally, the
Westlake Schools’ bond rating was upgraded from Aa2 to Aa1 by Moody’s Investor
Service, placing the district one notch away from the highest quality Aaa rating. Westlake
is one of 23 Ohio local school districts rated in this category, placing Westlake in the
top 4% of all Ohio schools. We recognize it is critical that our schools provide an
outstanding value to the community. W We hope you use this calendar to remain
engaged with your schools and to find helpful information. We are thankful for
the opportunity to see the Mission of Excellence is a reality in Westlake and
look forward to another great school year!

Letter from the Board of Education President
As Benjamin Franklin so eloquently stated, “An investment in knowledge always pays the best interest.” As individuals in our community, you continue to make
important investments in the Westlake City School District in order to provide all Westlake students with the best opportunities to achieve at their highest levels through
the many academic, athletic and fine arts programs offered to our students. We thank you for this consistent support which will allow our students success well beyond
their high school years. • The mission of excellence that the Westlake City School District brings to all aspects of district operations from academic programs to financial reporting; from athletics to strategic planning; serves as the district’s guide for the high standards expected by our community. Our 12th consecutive ranking of
“Excellent” on the state report card is an accomplishment that could only be achieved through the dedication of district administrators, teachers and staff members. •
Your financial support, with the recent passage of Issue 14, provides another important investment in our school district and our students’ learning. We thank our community for making our students a priority and are humbled by the trust you have shown in our ability to protect your financial investment in your schools. The passage of
Phase I of our Master Facilities Plan in May 2010 is the first phase of a long-range plan to fully address the facility needs at all of the district’s school buildings. When
complete, our schools will fully support the exceptional educational program we strive to offer all students. • We also want to thank the hundreds of community members from all segments of our city who helped to develop the Master Facilities Plan and who crafted an exceptional campaign to convey our needs. Through our website,
WHBS-TV, school and district newsletters, local media and other avenues of communication we will keep our community informed of our progress and continue to solicit community input regarding this exciting building project. • Another phase of our strategic planning process involved an Educational Summit that brought together a
diverse group of stakeholders to dialogue about what it means to offer a world-class education. Community, business, student and school leaders offered perspectives on
a three-year Continuous Improvement Plan the district will use as a compass in guiding our decision-making process. • The school year was also characterized by numerous achievements, both organizationally and academically. Below is a snapshot of the year in review:
• For the second consecutive year the district achieved a “perfect audit” from the State Auditor
• Our bond rating was upwardly shifted to Aa1 by Moody’s Investment Services, placing Westlake in the top 4% of all Ohio schools
• The district achieved its 17th consecutive financial reporting award for the Comprehensive Annual Financial Report
• Westlake had two national Gold Key winners in the 2010 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards competition
Please Note:
• Two Parkside Intermediate School students claimed one of 24 regional awards in the

Toshiba/National Science Teachers Association ExploraVision National Science Competition
since the printing of this calendar.
• A group of Lee Burneson Middle School students traveled to Kenya to collaborate with Maasai

• Four Westlake High School Engineering & Technology Education Department students
won state champion titles at the Ohio Technology & Engineering Educators Association
state conference school exhibits competition
• Our bands and orchestras continued to receive top ratings in regional, state and national competitions
We appreciate the community’s support in celebrating our successes and when making tough decisions. We count on that

With passage of Phase I of the Master Facilities Plan, the Westlake
Schools can move forward on a much-needed building project that
will include:
www.wlake.org
• Renovating and adding space at Lee Burneson Middle School to turn it into an
intermediate school for grades 5-6. Estimated completion: Winter 2013/2014.
• Building a new middle school for grades 7-8 near the existing building. Estimated
completion: Winter 2012/2013.
• Rebuilding an extensive portion of Westlake High School while preserving the 2005
additions. Estimated completion: Fall 2013.

Phase II will involve consolidation through renovating the existing Parkside Intermediate
School into a PreK-4 building, and building two new elementary schools. This will be
revisited with the community before being placed on the ballot. It is important to note the
district will have a tax millage drop-off in 2017 that potentially would equal the cost of
implementing Phase II, amounting to a tax neutral situation for the community.
