The 2015 Majors and Minors Fair is scheduled to take place on Wednesday, September 16, 2015 at 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM in the Raymond B. Preston Health and Activities Center. We are excited to again be partnering with Study Abroad & Global Learning to combine the Majors and Minors Fair with the Study Abroad Fair! This partnership will give students the unique opportunity to explore WKU majors and expand their education through a study abroad experience that fits with their academic and career goals. Aside from the valuable information, there will be hundreds of dollars in door prizes raffled off to students who attend the fair. Guess the major… You may not recognize his face, but you’ll surely recognize his products (iMacs, iPhones, the coolest Watch ever…) He’s Tim Cook, CEO of Apple! But what do you think he majored in at college? Tim Cook earned a Bachelor of Science in industrial engineering from Auburn University. He later got a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Duke. Major Spotlight One major from each of WKU’s academic colleges is highlighted. Science and Mathematics Education | College of Education and Behavioral Sciences – Students who wish to be science or mathematics teachers in middle or secondary schools must complete the major in Science and Mathematics Education (SMED). Students must choose at least one additional major in their specific area of focus (middle grades math, biology, geology, etc.). The SMED major consists of 34 hours of professional education courses. Exercise Science | College of Health and Human Services – A major in exercise science requires 55 hours and no minor is necessary. This major is for students who want to pursue careers in fitness management, corporate fitness and health promotion, medically-based fitness, and strength coaching, as well as students who wish to pursue graduate study in physical therapy, occupational therapy, medicine, nutrition, or exercise research. Accounting | Gordon Ford College of Business – A major in accounting requires a minimum of 74 hours and leaders to a bachelor of science. No minor or second major is required. The accounting department provides a challenging program of study for students who desire to pursue a major in the field of accounting. Students are engaged in unique and enriching learning experiences both inside and outside of the classroom. Upon the successful completion of the 121 hour undergraduate program, students are prepared for a rewarding career in public accounting, industry, government, and other business fields. History | Potter College of Arts & Letters – The major in history requires a minimum of 33 semester hours and leads to a bachelor of arts degree. A minor or a second major is required. The study of history flows from our desire to understand how humans have tried to turn their hopes into reality. Examining these past efforts can be both exhilarating and humbling. The human past is a record of remarkable achievements, astonishing in their variety. The past, however, also gives evidence of the fragility of those achievements. A history major will help you explore and understand issues facing people in the past, present, and future. Biochemistry | Ogden College of Science & Engineering – The major in biochemistry requires a minimum of 60 semester hours and leads to a bachelor of science degree. No minor or second major is required. This sequence of required chemistry and biology courses along with elective courses from chemistry, biology and agriculture offer the student a unique opportunity for interdisciplinary training. Training in biochemistry offers many exciting opportunities in teaching, research, and public service. It provides excellent preparation for students intending to enter professional programs such as Dentistry and Medicine as well as graduate study in biochemistry, chemistry, or biology. Organizational Leadership | University College — The Bachelor of Science in organizational leadership is an interdisciplinary degree that requires 48 hours. No minor or second major is required. This major is designed to provide you with an understanding of leadership roles and responsibilities at various levels within different types of organizations. Whether running your own business or working with large groups in a multinational company, you can use these principles to help you understand how your organization can function most effectively. This broad-based degree provides a framework for understanding how organizations work. You will take courses introducing leadership, organizational development, and management while broadening your global and social-cultural perspectives.
