Guess the major…
You probably recognize Lee Corso from ESPN’s College
Game Day, where he is famous for making predictions and
donning the mascot head of his predicted winner. But can
you guess what this famous sports analyst and coach majored in at Florida State University (where he also happened to be roommates with Burt Reynolds)? Corso majored in physical education.
Major Spotlight
One major from each of WKU’s academic colleges is highlighted.
Clinical and Community Behavioral Health Minor | College of Education and Behavioral Sciences
– The clinical and community behavioral health minor requires 21 hours of psychology and other
subjects. This exciting new minor is open to any major in the university, including Psychology
majors. Those completing this minor will: 1) Be better prepared for a career in the mental health
field and human services sector; 2) Gain greater awareness of major psychological theories and
paradigms of relevance in the mental health field and human services sector; 3) Demonstrate an
understanding of different types of mental health and human service organizations including
roles of professionals, range of services offered, and organizational values.
Sport Management | College of Health and Human Services – A Bachelor of Science in sport
management requires 57 hours. Though no minor is required, having a minor with this major is
encouraged, and complementary minors include athletic coaching, broadcasting, business administration, and facility and event management. This program prepares students for successful
careers within the sport industry. Students who major in sport management may find jobs working for amateur or professional athletic teams, facility and event management, sports marketing,
or sport media.
International Business | Gordon Ford College of Business – The International Business major
requires 70 hours of coursework and provides a broad international business perspective for students who wish to be employed by businesses that have international presence. This includes
both big businesses such as GM, Ford, and IBM as well as small to medium (SME) size multinational corporations. Typically, more than 60 percent of revenues of these corporations are derived from their overseas operations. This program of study prepares students for global careers
by providing sound business skills as well as geo-political understanding, language skills and
cultural and value awareness of specific geographic regions (area studies). Students in the IB major now have an opportunity to earn a dual-degree from WKU and St. Etienne, France. Similar
agreements with universities in Germany and Mexico are underway. The two degrees are earned
in 120 hours. That is, this dual-degree option does not add additional time or money.
Film | Potter College of Arts & Letters – The major in film requires 36 hours and requires a minor or a second major in an area outside of mass media and communication. The major in film
provides undergraduates a strong fundamental appreciation for cinema theory and criticism, as
well as the practical skills to produce their own films. With the opportunity to complete coursework in a variety of disciplines, including English, broadcasting, theatre, and anthropology, the
major features a strong interdisciplinary approach to the subject of cinema.
Civil Engineering | Ogden College of Science & Engineering – Civil engineers design a better
world in which to live. They design, build, and maintain our nation’s infrastructure. Some of the
things that civil engineers design include: roads and bridges; buildings and foundations; water
supply and waste-water facilities; storm water management systems; and environmental protection facilities. Civil engineering consists of 65-66 hours and does not require a minor or second
major. The mission of the WKU Civil Engineering Program is to prepare students for professional
engineering and management positions in all phases of civil engineering projects.
Paralegal Studies | University College — The bachelor of arts in paralegal studies major requires
60 hours and does not require a minor or a second major. This major is designed to provide students with an interdisciplinary education experience integrating knowledge and skills from multiple subjects including law, history, sociology, political science, technology and business. Paralegals, also called Legal Assistants, work with lawyers in a wide range or professional settings and
perform tasks that include legal research, legal writing and document preparation, information
gathering, litigation support, legal technology support, and office management.
