Guess the major…
Many children dream of becoming an astronaut, but
very few actually end up going to outer space. Scott
Kelly will soon be headed back to earth from the
International Space Station, but can you guess what
he studied in his undergrad that led him to his path
to the stars? Kelly earned a bachelors of science in
electrical engineering while also participating in
ROTC.
Major Spotlight
One major from each of WKU’s academic colleges is highlighted.
Psychology | College of Education and Behavioral Sciences – The major in psychology (B.A.) requires a minimum of 31 semester hours and leads to a bachelor of arts degree. A minor or second
major is required. Do you have an interest in helping people? Do you wonder why people, including you, choose to behave in certain ways? Would you like to have flexibility in designing your
degree? Are you interested in self-improvement? Do you desire a range of skills that employers
and graduate schools value? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then psychology might
be for you. Psychology is a good liberal arts degree that prepares you for many careers. Only 25%
of graduates stay in a field directly related to psychology. 40% work for business/other for-profit
organizations; 20-30% work in education; and 30% in non-profits including government. According to the College Majors Handbook the top 10 occupations for Psychology majors are management, sales, social work, personnel, health care, marketing, and financial specialists.
Health Care Administration | College of Health and Human Services – The Department of Public
Health offers a bachelors of science program in Health Care Administration (major with no minor requirements) for 73 hours. This program prepares the student for management and administrative positions in various types of health care facilities, organizations, and agencies such as
hospitals, nursing homes, group medical practices, health maintenance organizations, public
health agencies and clinics. This program will also prepare individuals to work in medical sales
companies, health planning agencies, insurance sector and other related health organizations.
Entrepreneurship | Gordon Ford College of Business – The major in entrepreneurship requires
70 hours and does not require a second major or minor. This program is designed to provide
maximum flexibility in the integration of coursework and actual experience to develop entrepreneurial potential and to provide the opportunity to turn that capability into reality. Coursework
and practical experiences allow students to apply principles of innovative thought, idea generation, market development, financial analysis, legal and ethical compliance, and human resource
development. Students are prepared to start and develop a new venture, to immediately contribute to the growth and expansion of the fast-growth firm, to be leaders in social or non-profit activities, and to be corporate “intrapreneurs” if employed in larger firms.
Music (Liberal Arts) | Potter College of Arts & Letters – The Bachelor of Arts, major in Music is a
Liberal Arts degree. This degree allows for a strong liberal arts education with a non-professional
emphasis in music. Requiring 48 hours in music and 36 hours in General Education through the
Colonnade Program it includes 36 elective hours, thus allowing students to pursue a second major, a minor, or simply elective study in music or other areas. WKU students earning this degree
have moved on to graduate study in Music (history, theory/composition, performance), Performing Arts Management, medical school, retail and banking positions, and university staff positions
in admissions, graduate studies, development, and alumni relations.
Computer Information Technology | Ogden College of Science & Engineering – University College – The CIT major requires 60 hours and does not require a minor. This degree can be earned
entirely online. A major in CIT prepares students for careers in technical areas such as web design and programming, database administration, computer network administration, and information security. Make sure you have the correct computer requirements before declaring this
major.
