STUDENT ID: TEXTBOOK # NOTEBOOK: Keep your notes on loose-leaf paper in a separate section of your binder. All notes and resource material can be found at: w3.dpcdsb.org/augst (departments→courses →science →SCH4U) Date each day’s notes. YOU are responsible for any notes that you miss. If you are absent, ask another classmate for his/her notes. Handouts and worksheets can be obtained from the teacher. If you are having difficulty with any of the work, come in for extra help. Every mark you earn is one step closer to the post-secondary program of your choice. I teach periods 1-2–4 and will be in room 241 at the end of the day. HOMEWORK: Homework (Practice Problems) will be assigned with every lesson. Any assigned work that is not completed in class may be completed at home. One problem (from the Section Review) will be checked ten times during the semester on Fridays only. These are worth approximately 5 % of your term mark (Knowledge). If you are accountably absent when the section review is checked, you will receive a ZERO until the work has been completed and shown to the teacher as soon as possible. ASSESSMENT AND EVALUATION: All assignments and lab reports are due at the beginning of class on the date assigned by the teacher. If you are absent for a lab, you must see the teacher to make an appropriate arrangement. No one is exempted from unit tests. If you miss a test, your absence should be justified with proper documentation and your name should appear on the attendance list. You should be present for each of the five unit tests. If you are ill, you may rewrite at a later date only once in the semester (exceptions made for court dates and specialist appointments). The unit test dates are Feb 20, March 22, April 19, May 15 and June 5. If you are not present for a second unit test the exam mark will be substituted for that unit test. Test questions will be handed back during the semester. For term work, the methods of evaluation will be weighted by the following system and will include the following evaluation categories: Evaluation Method 1 - Research Essay 5 - Unit Tests 7 - Lab Reports 2 - Chapter Tests 6 - Quizzes 10 - Homework 4 - Unit Review Sheets Achievement Chart Category (communication, application) (knowledge, inquiry, application, communication) (inquiry, application, communication) (knowledge, inquiry, communcation) (knowledge, inquiry, communication) (knowledge) (communication) LAB SAFETY AND REPORTING: All laboratory activities are safe under orderly conditions. Any student who places him/herself in an unsafe situation during a lab activity will not be permitted to continue. That student will be assigned a mark of zero for that lab. A repeated offence will disqualify the individual from all lab activities for the remaining of the semester. Lab reports are due of the following class day. However, you will be given two school days to submit at the beginning of class without penalty. You are usually given two days (penalty free) to submit your lab. If the report is not submitted at that time there will be a penalty of 2% per day for up to 5 days. The lab will not be accepted after the marked labs have been returned. The lab report submitted must be your own work for an individual lab. Although you are encouraged to work with members of your lab group the lab report must be your own writing. Plagiarism will result in a mark of zero. Do not let others copy your work. There will be group labs where the lab will be handed in at the end of the period and lab quizzes. Goggles are required when performing lab activities. If you are finished your lab you can return to your desk and start your write up. If you are not wearing your goggles while in the lab you will be given one warning – for the whole semester – after that time you will be asked to leave the lab. STUDENT NAME: TEXTBOOK #: ____________
