Promoting a Positive School Climate!
A positive learning and teaching environment is
essential if students are to succeed in school. Students
are more motivated to do well and to realize their full
potential in schools that have a positive school climate
where they feel safe and supported. Safe schools teams
are a key element in creating a positive school climate,
because they bring together school staff, parents,
students and the community on a team that works
together towards this common goal.
At St. Stephen School, our Safe Schools Team (also
known as the Catholic, Community, Culture and
Caring Safe Schools Action Team) have been working
diligently to help in creating a positive and safe school
climate. They have initiated a Poster Contest against Bullying (displayed in the photo), have assisted with
the Virtues Assemblies, performed skits, and have also assisted with our Anti-Bullying ‘Huddle-Up’
campaign with the Toronto Argonauts, to name only a few. Our Team developed a school-wide pledge and
rap that are recited daily!
Students display the characteristics of ‘Love, Compassion, Honesty and Respect’ which is our school motto!
Together, we are making a difference!

A Prayer for the Easter Season
May we go into the day to share the love of the risen
Christ,
May the light of God shine on us.
May the light of Christ shine in us.
May the light of the Spirit shine through us.
Jesus Christ is risen and has given us new life
Thanks be to God,
Alleluia, Alleluia!
Amen
EASTER SEASON:
CATHOLIC EDUCATION WEEK:
Easter Season begins on
Easter Sunday and lasts 50 days,
ending on Pentecost.
Thus in 2013 it begins on
April 1, 2013 and ends on May 19, 2013.
There are special days that occur during
the Easter Season. Ascension Day, is
celebrated on the fortieth day of Easter,
thus always a Thursday (May 16, 2013).
In a world that often
fixates on the negative,
divisive and the cynical,
the goodness and
giftedness that comes
from our school and other
Catholic schools can be overlooked.
This year’s Catholic Education Week
(May 6-10) celebrates our schools with
the theme: ‘Growing Together in Faith’.
Five sub-themes, one for each of the five
school days of Catholic Education Week,
help students to understand the rich
meaning of this year’s theme:
Easter is not only the greatest Christian
feast; it is the fulfillment of our faith as
Christians. Through His Death, Christ
destroyed our bondage to sin; through
His Resurrection, He brought us the
promise of new life, both in Heaven and
on earth. His own prayer, "Thy Kingdom
come, on earth as it is in Heaven," begins
to be fulfilled on Easter Sunday.
On behalf of our Staff and students, we
wish you a blessed Easter Season!
VOLUNTEERS IN THE SCHOOL:
Staff and students at
St. Stephen wish to thank all of
the Parent Volunteers for their
support over the past year. Their
valuable time has enhanced delivery of
student programmes, trips, Sacramental
preparation and special events.
Volunteers in the school are an example
of the working relationship between
home, school and parish!
A Volunteer Appreciation Social will take
place in the Library on Tuesday, June 18,
2013 from 2:30 - 3:15 pm.
Please contact Mrs. Vandecamp for
information.
SACRAMENTAL CELEBRATIONS:
Congratulations to our
Gr. 2 students who will be
receiving the Sacrament of Holy
Communion on May 11!
Congratulations to our Gr. 8
students who received the Sacrament of
Confirmation on May 1!
We trust students have experienced
God’s love for them!
Monday:

Thursday:
Friday:
Faith that is Rooted,
Faith that is Nurtured
Faith that is Discerned,
Faith that is Witnessed,
Faith that is Celebrated.
Catholic Education Week begins on
Sunday to highlight the partnership that
remains the foundation of Catholic
Education between our Catholic Schools
and local Catholic parishes. Throughout
Catholic Education Week, we ask you to
reflect on the significance of Catholic
education’s presence and contribution in
our Church, and in our society.
We invite all members of our community,
to participate in the celebrations and
activities that will mark the celebration
of Catholic Education Week, 2013 in our
school! A flyer went home a few weeks
ago and we want to remind you to let
your child(ren)’s teacher(s) know if you
will be attending any of our events.
We look forward to seeing you in our
school during that week!
Please call the school, if you wish another
copy of the flyer or check our school’s

PHOTOGRAPHING / VIDEOTAPING
OF STUDENTS:
The Municipal Freedom of
Information and Protection of
Privacy Act (MFIPPA) sets out the
general rules which School Boards
must follow regarding the collection,
use, disclosure and retention of
personal information.
Please be aware that the recording of
students through printed form
(photographs), on film, by electronic
means (video taping) or by any other
means is considered a ‘collection of
personal information’ and therefore
certain rules apply for its collection,
use, disclosure etc. While the privacy
rules in the Act are strong, signed
parental consent forms may or may
not be required in ALL situations.
The photographing / recording of
students would not be permitted
without the required informed

WARM WEATHER REMINDER:
DRESS CODE, SUN PROTECTION
AND FLUIDS:
With warm weather arriving and
shopping for new clothing a
possibility, it is important to review
the dress code and appropriate dress
for the school day. Students are
expected to dress in an appropriate
manner and attire which instill the
values of cleanliness, neatness, good
taste and modesty within our Catholic
school environment.
Here are some guidelines:

APRIL SHOWERS BRING MAY
……PUDDLES!
With the rainy season upon us,
there are puddles and mud in
the schoolyard where children can get
wet socks and clothing. Our school
approach is to contact parents to bring
dry clothing. This is often inconvenient
for parents.
Therefore, may we suggest that you pack
an extra pair of socks and track pants in
your child’s back pack in the event that a
change of clothing is necessary.




Students are allowed to wear sleeveless
tops, provided they are tight to the
underarm
Shorts may be worn when the weather
warrants it, so long as they are not too
tight or too short. Cut-off or ripped jeans
may not be worn.
Muscle shirts, tank tops, halter tops, tube
tops, spaghetti strap tops or tops that
reveal a bare back, midriff, or
undergarments are not permitted at
school.
Shirts with offensive, suggestive or
inappropriate slogans, pictures or violent
symbols are not permitted.
Tight, revealing and/or spandex clothing
is not acceptable.
Shoes must be worn at all times for
obvious health and safety reasons.
Protective measures such as hats,
sunglasses and sunscreen are strongly
encouraged for protection against
dangerous UV rays. Students are
reminded that their hats need to be
removed upon entering the school
building.
Bottles for water are allowed in the
classroom only.
PROTECTING THE SKIN:

Over exposure to the sun,
can cause skin damage.
We remind students
regularly to take precautions
to protect their skin during recesses.

The following are some suggestions to
help protect the skin:

 wear protective clothing
 wear hats to protect eyes & skin
stay out of direct sunlight
 know your skin type (fair skinned
people burn easier)
 wear sunblock (the higher the
protection factor number, the greater
the protection).
We highlight the need to maintain good
coverage, both for sun protection as well
as for moral reasons.
Students who come to school in
unacceptable attire may be asked to
phone their parents to arrange for a
change of clothing to be brought to the
school and/or spend time in the Office.
We ask for your support and cooperation
in assisting students to make appropriate
clothing choices.
‘READY, SET, READ!’ PROGRAMME:
This summer, all Dufferin-Peel schools
in Brampton are inviting students to
participate in the ‘Ready, Set, Read!’
programme! This summer reading
programme is run in partnership with
the Brampton Public Library.
This programme provides students with
lists of books to read over the summer
months that are ‘just right’ for every
student’s reading level. The programme
encourages students to read and respond
to reading every day over the summer
months to improve their reading skills!
Students in Gr. 1-3 who are reading PM
Benchmark Level 16, will receive
information to register for the
programme. Once students are
registered they will be provided with:




Two independent reading lists of
books that can be found at the
Brampton Public Library
A Reader’s Toolkit that includes great
activities for promoting reading
comprehension strategies
A Parent’s Toolkit that offers parents
strategies and information to support
their child’s reading
An invitation to attend ‘Ready, Set,
Read!’ workshops that will be offered
at the public library branches this
summer (1 hour weekly)
We hope to see all students keeping up
their reading over the summer months!
See you at the library!
SCHOOL COUNCIL BUSINESS:

worked hard this year on the
students’ behalf. Together,
we have addressed support

art performers and much more) and
lunches throughout the year. A complete
report of the fundraising activities will
also be provided at a later date with the
School Council Newsletter: SHARK

ARE YOU MOVING?:
We are in the process of
planning staffing and
organizing classes for
the 2013–2014 school year.
If you are planning to move any time
between now and September 2013, please
inform Mrs. Psaila at the school.
TEXTBOOKS AND LIBRARY BOOKS:
Your assistance in assuring
that all books belonging to the
school are returned during the
week of June 10 – 14, 2013 is
greatly appreciated!
During Catholic Education Week,
parents are invited to peruse selected
Faith based books recommended by the
Ontario Catholic Trustees Association on
display in the library.
VALUABLES:
Students are requested not to
bring valuables or items of
importance to school! This
includes CDs, game boys, cell phones,
expensive sports equipment, iPods,
Discman, MP3 Players and cameras etc.
The school cannot assume responsibility
for valuables! Below is the School Board
Policy on the Use of the PEDs:
SCHOOL POLICY ON THE USE OF
PERSONAL ELECTRONIC DEVICES
(PEDs) by Students on School Property:
To promote respect for the dignity of all
members of our school community and to
enhance student achievement and safety,
the use of a PED is strictly prohibited in
the school (including portables) or
during school related activities (such as
retreats, field trips, sports events, etc.).
Failure to comply with this policy may
result in the confiscation of the PED
and/or disciplinary action as outlined in
the Catholic Code of Conduct 2001. The
school and the Dufferin-Peel Catholic
District School Board assume no
responsibility for the loss, recovery,
repair or replacement for any PEDs
brought onto school property.
It is the policy of the Dufferin-Peel
Catholic District School Board that PEDs
are to be kept out-of- sight, turned off
and not used within school premises or
during school sanctioned events.
To prevent the loss or damage of PEDs,
the school encourages students to leave
their PEDs at home or left in the office
during the school day.
LOST AND FOUND BOX:
Once again, the Lost and Found Box is
overflowing with clothing items,
footwear etc. If your child is missing
these type of items, it may be there.
Please encourage your child to take a
look, or drop in yourself to peruse the
Lost and Found box
STUDENT PLACEMENT FOR
SEPTEMBER 2013:
We will soon begin the process
of organizing Class lists for the
school for September, 2013. The final
Organizational Plan will be driven by the
actual number of students who are
registered and come to class in
September. However, although we make
the best plan possible, the final school
organization will be determined in
September based on real and actual
registrations.
This means that we ‘tentatively’ organize
our classes. You may be aware, that
organizing Class Lists involves a complex
process and is done in consultation with
the current year’s teachers, support staff
and Administrator.
As part of this process, parents /
guardians may also provide input in
writing.
Any parent wishing further input is asked
to submit their request in writing prior to
May 17, 2013! Please consider the
following guidelines if you wish to submit
your request:



Input must be made in writing to the
Principal
Frame requests in terms of
educational contexts: eg. – your child’s
learning needs / strengths / style
(information not already known to the
school), best learning environment…
Please do not make requests for
specific teachers as staffing is always
tentative and changes can take place
between now and September
For your information, teachers will
receive a copy of your letter.
MATH @ HOME :
Attached is the latest
‘Math @ Home’ communicate
that offers suggestions for
parents to use with their children
regarding tools and computational
strategies for problem solving!
BICYCLES:
Please remind your child(ren)
that cyclists are governed by the
same traffic rules as drivers. It is
important to review safe cycling
procedures at home.
Be certain that your child’s bicycle is
‘road worthy’ and that your child is able
to ride in a safe manner, remembering to
wear their bicycle helmet.
Parents / guardians and students are
reminded that when left unattended at
school, bicycles should be locked at the
bike racks!
The school does not accept responsibility
for damaged or stolen bikes. It’s a good
idea to keep photos, model and serial
numbers handy in the event of a stolen
bike.
This information may assist police in
retrieving the bicycle.
MEDICATIONS AND EPI PENS:
If a child is required to
bring medication to school,
procedures relative to the
administration of medication
shall only be adopted:



when requested by the parent /
guardian
when authorized by a physician
when medication must be provided
during school
If medication is required at school,
signed request / authorization forms
from the parents / guardians and the
supervising physician is initiated.
These forms are available through the
school Office. The required
authorization forms and the medication
shall be delivered to the Office.
All medications (with the exception of
EPI-pens in some cases) will be housed in
a safe location. Medication must not be
kept in the child’s possession (ie – pocket,
backpack etc.) or in the classroom!
SHARKS JUNIOR BOYS AND GIRLS
BASKETBALL TEAMS:
Both our Junior Girls
and Boys SHARKS
Basketball Teams are to be
congratulated for their
dedication and hard work
throughout the basketball
season this year.
Although both teams put forth a great
effort during April’s tournament, they
fell short of placing!
We are very proud of both teams!
A special thank you also goes to those
who helped out during practices and the
tournament:
Dante Tramontozzi, Tyler Auger, Sara
Atherley, Joseph Atherley, Avalon
Boatemaah-Osei and Sofia Salituro.
A thank you to the coaches of both teams:
Mrs. Sousa, Mrs. Ianiero, Ms Bucci, Ms
Sochnacka and Mr. Bowyer.
Junior Boys Shark Team Members:
Ethan Archer, Jonathan Blair, Aiden
Cowper, Mark Kanhai, Kelvin Karran,
Anthony Larade, James Larade, Quinn
McCallum, Noah Pacheco, Samson Pitan,
Davide Tramontozzi and Gordon Varcoe.
Junior Girls Shark Team Members:
Gabriella Ardila, Jenna Auger, Jordan
Auger, Kimberly Clarke, Emilia Frias,
Keira Martin, Milah Mills, Hannah Pitan,
Doreen Sarfo, Olivia Skinkle and
Mackenzie Sunderland.
PARENT ENGAGEMENT EVENINGS:
During the school year, the School
Council organizes information evenings
for parents on various relevant topics
held at St. Stephen School. One recent
evening, two presentations given by Peel
Regional Police and the Brampton Safe
City, were offered to parents on the
topics of ‘Internet Safety and Bullying’.
One of our parents shared her thoughts
on this evening:
“I wanted to take a moment and thank
you for the recent Parent Engagement
evening on Internet Safety and Bullying.
Not only were the topics so relevant to us
as parents, but the night itself was
enjoyable. A warm welcome as we
arrived, with hot coffee and refreshments
was appreciated! The presenters were
amazing, not only accomplished speakers,
but extremely knowledgeable having
personally experienced these topics
themselves! I can’t tell you how much I
learned from both sessions that I will put
into practice immediately including the
tips for keeping our children and youth
safe online (the examples were shocking)
tools we can use immediately (things as
simple as coaching our daughters (and
sons) not to give away their gender in
their online user names, etc.) and even
behaviours and signs to watch for. I can’t
believe this much information is
available to us for free and can’t thank
you enough for these valuable sessions!
Please keep them coming!
Is it possible that your child is bullying
others?
Michelle DiTomaso (parent)
Think about how problems and conflicts
are dealt with in your home. Do you talk
through issues positively as a family? An
important way to discourage bullying is
to be a good role model and show your
kids how to sort out difficulties without
using power or aggression.
BULLYING:
How can parents / guardians help their
children deal with bullying?
Regardless of age, you can help by
encouraging your child to talk to you
about it and by giving the following
advice:






Walk away from the situation
Don’t hit back, don’t talk, don’t
reply back
Tell an adult whom you trust – a
teacher, the Principal, the school
bus driver or the lunchroom
supervisor – about what happened
Talk about it with your brothers or
sisters or with friends, so that you
don’t feel you’re alone
Find a friend to be with, in the
places where you don’t feel safe
Call ‘Kids Help Phone’ at 1-800-6686868 or visit their website at
www.kidshlepphone.ca





Children who physically bully
other students may also come
home with bruises, scrapes and
torn clothing.
They may suddenly have more
money to spend than usual or new
possessions that they would
normally not be able to afford.
They may also ‘talk tough’ about
other students.
Children who bully sometimes do
so at home as well as at school.
Look and listen within your own
household. Are there signs that
one of your children is being
bullied by a sibling?
Bullying behavior can develop
over a long period of time or as a
result of major changes, losses or
upsets in a child’s life. Have any of
your children recently had these
kinds of experiences?

SPRING NEWSLETTER RE: STUDENT TRANSPORTATION
IMPORTANT NOTICE REGARDING TRANSPORTATION ELIGIBILITY
FOR DUFFERIN-PEEL CATHOLIC DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD STUDENTS
CURRENTLY IN GRADES 1, 4 AND 8
Eligibility for transportation is determined based on distance criteria established in Board policy. For the DufferinPeel Catholic District School Board, these are:
JK – Grade 1
Grades 2 – 4
Grades 5 – 8
Grades 9 – 12
1.0 kilometre
1.6 kilometres
2.0 kilometres
4.8 kilometres
The purpose of this communication is to ensure that parents of students currently in grade 1, grade 4 and grade 8
are aware that transportation eligibility status for your child may change next year as your child moves,
respectively, to grades 2, 5 and 9. As the distance criteria increases at the noted grade levels, students who are
currently eligible for transportation in grades 1, 4 and 8, may no longer be eligible for transportation when they
move to the next grade level.
Effective June 1, transportation eligibility information for 2013-2014 will be available on our website. To confirm the
transportation eligibility status for your child for the 2013-2014 school year, please access our website at
www.stopr.ca. Access the “Am I Eligible for Transportation?” icon, select 2013-2014 and enter the required
address, 2013-2014 grade level, and program information to obtain the transportation eligibility status for your
child.
This notification is provided to advise parents of a potential change in transportation eligibility and, therefore,
provide sufficient time for parents to make arrangements to get their child to school, if required.
INTEGRATED RIDERSHIP
Since 2011, Student Transportation of Peel Region (STOPR) has been utilizing integrated ridership on various bus
runs. With integrated ridership, students from both Dufferin-Peel and Peel schools ride together on the same
buses. All eligible students continue to be transported on runs where integrated ridership is implemented.
Integrated ridership is designed to create a more effective and efficient operation of service, is more
environmentally friendly and reduces traffic in our communities.
STOPR staff continues to assess additional school communities where integrated ridership may be feasible.
STOPR will provide additional information to your school community, if integrated ridership will be implemented for
the 2013-2014 school year in your area.
