Grade 2 Lesson 7
Good readers think about what they are reading
and prepare to talk with others about what they
have learned or what they found interesting.
One way to prepare for meaningful discussions
and sharing is to take notes.
All About Sharks is a reference book because it
includes true facts about the topic. Today we’re
going to learn to take notes about two or three
new and surprising facts that we would like to
share in a discussion with a group or a partner.
We can use sticky notes and place them on the
One way to find interesting information is to ask
ourselves what we would like to know before we
start reading and then write our questions on
sticky notes. We could ask:
pages of the book to refresh our memory and
guide us to the part of the book that inspired
us.
Today we’re going to revisit the book All About
Sharks.

Asking questions before we read is a good
strategy. We could write one of the questions
we came up with on a sticky note and set it
aside. Then as we read, if we find the answer to
the question, we can place the sticky note on
that page in the book and write the answer on
the note.
Model the strategy by writing “How

Another strategy for note taking is to stop and
jot a fact when you read one that is surprising or
interesting.
Open the page with the heading “Parts of a
Typical Shark.”
This says sharks don’t have bones. I think that’s
interesting. They are made of cartilage, like our noses.
I want to discuss that with a group, so I’m going to
write that on a sticky note and place it on this page.
By taking notes, I am better able to remember
important facts, keep track of where they are in the
book, and talk about them with other readers.

Choose a student as your partner to model how to use
the sticky note for turn and talk.
Refer to the sticky note about sharks not having bones to
begin the conversation: (you might say) I didn’t know sharks
don’t have bones it makes sense because they are

any other animals that don’t have bones?
Do you see how we can have a conversation

Find out if your partner already knew the fact
and if he or she has additional information to
share with you.
