(7)Launching Grade 2 Lesson 1 Now when I make my own breakfast on Sunday mornings, I hear my mother singing in my head. Sometimes something that we did repeatedly in the past can stick in our heads and remind us of that time and the people we shared it with. (8) Launching Grade 2 Lesson 1 Bear continues to hear the woman’s voice and be comforted by her presence because she lives on in the books that she left him. Do you have an object, like the book, that reminds you of someone? Can you think of an event or ritual that reminds you of another person, of something they said or did? Describe that event to your partner. (finish reading the book) (9) Launching Grade 2 Lesson 1 Although Bear didn’t understand the words that the woman was reading, he understood the emotions, and he felt close to his new friend. They formed a reading community, and in our reading workshop we will set aside a special time to read together, just like Bear and the woman. (10)Launching Grade 2 Lesson 1 During reading workshop it is also important that we stop and share what we are feeling and what the book means to each of us, like we did today. We can stop, think about what it means, make connections to our own lives, and then share them with a partner. (Display Appendix 1: “Reading Workshop: Expectations”) (11)Launching Grade 2 Lesson 1 As we learn to be a part of a reading community we can also look for other times to include reading in our lives, beyond our school reading workshop. Your own reading community can grow as big as you want and although your community probably won’t include a bear, it could include a cat or dog!
