(Continue reading stopping after “It was clock party in
the sky.” Ask students to turn and talk about what’s
happening).
(Read to the end, thinking aloud about what is
happening. Refer to details in the text.)
How do you think the boy feels?
When all the power goes out, the whole
city goes outside to be together. I think the
boy is happy then. But when the power
comes back on, everyone goes back to their
busy lives. Is the boy still happy? How does
the boy solve his problem? Turn and talk to
your partners.
(9) Fiction Lesson 8
Blackout by John Rocco (after reading the story)
It seems like the blackout is going to be a
problem because no one has power. But in
the end what appears to be the problem is
really the solution. I think the message that
the author wants us to remember is that we
should take time to pay attention to each
other, even when we are busy. When we
read closely and thoughtfully, we
understand the author’s message.
