Bilateral Coordination Skills

Bilateral Coordination refers to being able to use both sides of the body in a coordinated manner.

Activities that work on bilateral coordination could use large muscles and small muscles. We practice both at school. Here is a list of activities that would work on developing bilateral coordination skills at home.

Playing with play dough- rolling with both hands to make a snake, rolling between both hands to make a ball

Ball activities using both hands- catching a large ball, rolling a ball to a partner, playing volleyball with beachball using both hands to hit the ball

Monkey bars with reciprocal hand movements

Activities which involve putting objects with one hand while other hand is holding the container such as; pennies into a bank while holding the bank and beans into a small container being held with other hand.

Pulling and pushing accordion tubes to open and close

Lay on stomach on a scooter board and propel self along with both arms or pull self along with a rope

Scrunch up paper into a ball and throw into a basket

Tear paper into small pieces to glue onto a picture

String beads, noodles, small pieces of straws or cereal onto string, yarn or pipe cleaner

Practice animal walks such as bears ( on hands and feet to walk), crab walk ( lay on back and walk on hands and feet with bottom off the ground), frog jumps ( squat down and put hands on ground and then jump up and then squat down)

Practice stirring ingredients together- holding the bowl with one hand while mixing with the other

Carrying basket of clothes with both hands from one room to another or pushing the basket with both hands from one room to another.

Playing with link up toys such as Legos, pop beads, and Tinker toys

Wind- up toys

Riding bicycles or tricycles

Opening and closing jars or small containers

Holding books while turning pages

Lacing activities

Practice cutting old cards- holding with one hand while cutting with the other hand
