An Easter Reflection
Lord,
the resurrection of Your Son
has given us new life and renewed hope.
Help us to live as new people
in pursuit of the Christian ideal.
Grant us wisdom to know what we must do,
the will to want to do it,
the courage to undertake it,
the perseverance to continue to do it,
and the strength to complete it.
Amen.
“I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, shall live.
And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die.” John 11: 25-26
Administrator’s Message…
We continue our Lenten journey, and as a community of faith we continue to reflect and renew
ourselves spiritually. We continue to engage in prayer, fasting and almsgiving as we prepare for
the celebration of Easter.
February was another busy and active month at St. Catherine of Siena. Activities this month
included: two Virtue Assemblies, school and family Speech Contests, grade 7 Confirmation
registration, jrNBA day, Book Fair, Junior Basketball, our third Mission Possible Monday activity,
a Shrove Tuesday breakfast in support of ShareLife, Ash Wednesday celebration, a Valentine’s
Spirit Day, two Artist in the School Presentations, Peel Police presentations, Eco Waste
Reduction Workshops, and of course our inaugural Math Night entitled Math Counts @ Home.
In March, we will focus on the virtue of Kindness as we continue to foster a safe, caring, healthy
and inclusive school community. Activities this month include: two virtue assemblies, Junior
Achievement and Living Arts workshops for our grade eight students, Aboriginal Arts workshop
for Ms. Sgro's class, a Catholic School Council meeting, Parent Literacy Nights, Sacrament of
First Reconciliation for our grade two students, school wide reconciliation, Youth Faith
Ambassador Rally, a SAIDAT assembly kicking off school wide Pathways activities, and of
course our Story of Salvation presentations headed by Ms. Sluga and Madame Jorge that will be
presented to our school, and to staff from over 25 schools in the Mississauga South community.
Ms. Campinos
As always we’d like to thank all the parents of our Catholic School Council and all of our parent
volunteers who continue to be vibrant members of our community supporting our students in so
many different ways.
Yours in Catholic Education,
G. Pedroso and R. Scicluna

Virtue of the Month: Kindness
God wants us to give
generously to others
around us.
God wants us to be kind to
everyone we meet. Being
kind is about more than just
pretending to be nice. It is about
helping and playing with others because we want to and
not because we feel we have to. God helps up to be
kind to our family and friends because by being kind we
are able to see God in every one we meet.
Ontario Catholic School Graduate
Expectations
Distinctive expectations for graduates
of Catholic schools are determined
and shaped by the vision and destiny
of the human person emerging from
our faith tradition. Catholic education
views human life as an integration of
body, mind, and spirit. Rooted in this
vision, Catholic education fosters the
search for knowledge as a lifelong
spiritual and academic quest.
The Graduate is expected to be:
Our Daily Prayer for March:
Let us now pray for the virtue of kindness so that
everyone we meet will feel like we are looking out for
their good. Amen
From the perspective of the Catholic Graduate
Expectations, a person with kindness:

Lenten Season
Our Liturgical Season of Lent is
well underway and continues until
Easter weekend (March 25-28).
During our six week Lenten
journey we recognize and discuss
with our students our human
frailties which causes us to sin. We prepare for the
coming of Easter through reflection, prayer and charity.
We respond to Jesus’ call for a “change of heart” by
becoming stronger in our will to say ‘yes’ to God and ‘no’
to our selfishness. We look forward to our Lenten
journey together, a strengthened and renewed faith in
God’s will.

2016 Annual Offence Declaration
for Volunteers
On our school website, in the Parents
section, and attached to this
newsletter, you’ll find a copy the
school’s 2016 Annual Offence
Declaration for Volunteers. This
declaration saves parents from completing another
Criminal Reference Check, if done within the year. If
you have a Criminal Reference Check here at the
school, we’re asking you to please complete, sign and
submit this declaration to the office.
We're very thankful and appreciative of everyone’s
commitment and support to the students of St. Catherine
of Siena!
If you're interested in helping at the school, and do not
have a Criminal Reference Check, we are more than
happy to give you the necessary forms to be signed and
completed. Criminal Reference Checks are free of
charge for volunteers. All volunteers, including those
going on one day school trips, must have a Criminal
Reference Check completed by the Peel Police.
Catholic School Council
Communication between home
and school is greatly enhanced
by parental involvement with the
Catholic School Council. The
aim of the Catholic School
Council is to promote the vision, values, sacramental life
and Catholic practices of the Dufferin-Peel Catholic
District School Board and the Catholic community it
serves and to advise the principal and the Board. Future
meetings are scheduled for:
Next Meeting: Wednesday, March 2 (6 p.m.)
Wednesday, June 8 (6 p.m.)
The show promises to be a moving experience,
reminding us all of God’s invitation.

Additional P.A. Day: (April 11, 2016)
Terms of the recent contract settlement between the
teacher federations and the Ministry of Education
included the provision of an additional Professional
Activity Day for the 2015-2016 school year for both
elementary and secondary schools. Recently, boards
were directed to schedule this additional Professional
Development Day on or before April 15, 2016. The
DPCDSB designated the additional P.A. Day for
Monday, April 11, 2016; therefore there will be no
classes for either elementary or secondary students
on this day.
Math Night – Success
St. Catherine of Siena’s
inaugural Math Night took
place this past week. The night
was open to all students and
their families; there were over
40 families that fought the weather and attended. It was
a fun-filled family oriented evening enjoyed by all.
Each family left with a Math Bag, including many
activities to make math fun at home. Thank you to all
the teachers, especially those on the Math Night
Committee who helped make this event possible.
A Take Home Math Mission Possible was given to every
family, with one lucky family winning a Math Game Prize
pack.

EQAO Grade 3 and
Grade 6 Testing
> May 25 - June 8
The EQAO (Education Quality and Accountability Office)
testing of our Grade 3 and 6 students will take place
from May 26 - June 5. Please avoid scheduling any
doctor’s appointments or anything else that will
take your child out of school during these
testing dates. Tests and materials cannot be given
out to parents prior to or during the testing. Previous
media accounts revealed that some parents and children
become anxious about this test. Please try to keep this
testing in perspective for your child. A letter to grade 3
and 6 parents with further information will be sent home
closer to the testing dates.

Catholic Education Week (May 1-6, 2016)
“Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive
mercy.” – Matthew 5:7
Catholic Education Week begins on a Sunday to
highlight the partnership that remains the foundation of
Catholic education between our Catholic schools and
local Catholic parishes. Throughout Catholic Education
Week, we ask you to reflect on the significance of
Catholic education’s presence and contribution in our
Church, and in our society. We invite all members of our
community, to participate in the celebrations and
activities that will mark the celebration of Catholic
Education Week 2016 in our schools.
This year’s five sub-themes, one for each of the five
days of Catholic Education Week, help students to
understand the rich meaning of this year’s theme:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
Mercy that Welcomes
Mercy that Loves
Mercy that Forgives
Mercy that Lives the Gospel
Mercy that Rejoices

The Online Reporting Tool
The Dufferin-Peel Catholic
District School board has
developed a new way to
help nurture a safe, caring
and inclusive school
environment. The Online
Reporting Tool is intended for students in grades 3 – 8
who become aware of bullying incidents and negative
behaviours. The student can simply ‘click’ on the link
found on our school’s website to fill out the report. The
report will then be directly emailed to the principal and/or
vice principal and will be dealt with accordingly. It is
important to recognize that the Online Reporting Tool is
an alternate reporting option. It is best practice to speak
directly with a responsible adult at home and/or in the
school.
Inclement Weather, School Closures and
Bus Cancellations
During the winter months inclement weather may cause
disruption to bus transportation and regular school
operations. A decision to cancel school transportation
and/or to close schools is usually made by 6:00 a.m. and
will be announced on the following radio stations:
VIRGIN RADIO FM 99.9
CFNY FM 102.1
FM Z 103.5
CHIN FM 100.7
EZ ROCK FM 97.3
FM 93.1
CBC 99.1
FM 98.1
FM Q107
AM 640
CFRB AM 1010
AM 1540
CHUM AM 1050
CJCL AM 590
CFTR AM 680
CJBC (FR) AM86CHFI
CITYTV
CTV and GLOBAL NEWS
The message usually takes the following form, “The
Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board and the
Peel District School Board buses are cancelled.” This
means that buses are cancelled for the entire day.
Or, to indicate school closures, “The schools and
offices of the Peel District School Board and the
Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board have been
closed.” Should the announcement refer to cancellation
only in the COUNTY OF DUFFERIN, this does NOT
affect our school.
Wet Clothing
With the long, wet winter and the
unpredictable temperatures, our
schoolyard alternates from icy and
slippery to soggy and muddy. When
conditions become dangerous or too
wet, we close the field to student use.
On most days, however, the students
have access to the field and complete paved areas.
We have been encountering some issues with wet
clothing. Often times, especially our older students,
children come to school without boots and snowpants.
We ask for your assistance in ensuring that all students
come to school with appropriate attire for the weather,
including boots, to ensure that they are comfortable to
learn when returning indoors.
Please consider leaving a change of clothes (or even
just socks) in your child’s backpack. This will alleviate
the office from having to call home for dry clothes.
Before School Hours Supervision
For your child’s safety, we request that children not
be on school property until supervision begins at
8:45 a.m.
Kindergarten students are to enter through the gates
from 8:45 – 9 a.m. Please do not drop off your child
earlier as there is no supervision.

Outdoor Play
Anaphylaxis Reaction Reminder
The winter season is upon us. Please
ensure that your child is properly
dressed for outdoor play in a
Canadian winter. It is a school
expectation that all students go
outside for recess for exercise and
fresh air. If your child is unable to go outside for recess
because of illness, please consider keeping them home
until they are feeling better. We also ask that your
child have a pair of indoor shoes for classroom use,
labeled with their name for easy identification. Many
students are not remembering to bring a separate pair of
shoes, and are tracking the mud from the field into the
classrooms, hallways and bathrooms. Your help with this
is appreciated.
As there are a number of students
in our school who have a severe
life threatening allergy to nuts, we
ask our families to refrain from
sending to school any food, etc.
that contains nut products (i.e.
peanut butter sandwiches, snacks with nuts, etc.). While
we cannot guarantee a “Nut Free” or “Allergen Free”
environment, you can help to reduce the risk to our
students by not sending in peanuts, nuts of any kind,
products containing nuts, nut oil, or nut by-products,
foods that MAY have come in contact with nuts or nut
products and fast food or commercial snacks where the
ingredients are unclear (i.e. Timbits). Thank you!
We would appreciate your support in reinforcing the
school rule that all snow stays on the ground. For
everyone’s safety we do not allow snowballs,
kicking snow, or any other snow\ice activity that
could lead to potential harm or injury.
Winter Weather
During the winter season, the school
receives calls from concerned parents
as to how we determine when children
will or will not be allowed outside for
recess. Dufferin‐Peel CDSB Policy uses
a Wind Chill factor of ‐25 C as the
determining temperature. Students will not be sent
outside for recess if it is colder than this.
In the colder weather we receive numerous requests to
allow children to remain indoors when students have a
cold, flu, etc. Please note that we cannot comply, as we
neither have the facilities nor the staff to supervise these
students. If your child is not feeling well we
encourage you to keep them home to avoid the
spread of illness. The expectation at St. Catherine of
Siena is that all children will go outdoors for recess
and the lunch break.
Pediculosis (Head Lice)
Head lice are always present in the
community, and are not a reflection of a
child’s cleanliness. By checking your
child’s head once a week for head lice,
you will catch it early and treat it before it
has a chance to spread. If cases are found in the school,
we shall inform all parents. If your child does have head
lice, we ask you to keep them out of school until after
they have been treated and their hair is entirely clear of
both lice and nits (eggs.) Any infected student will need
to be checked before re-entry to class. A reminder to
refrain from sharing hats at any time, but especially
during the winter months.
No Birthday Food Treats Please
Please do not send birthday or seasonal
snacks/cakes/treats into the school. There are many
alternatives such as stickers and pencils.
St. Catherine of Siena School is an allergen aware
school. There are pupils in attendance at our school who
suffer from severe and life threatening allergies to
certain foods, such as peanut
and nut products. For that
reason we would appreciate
parents NOT sending in any food
for other children to eat. We want
St. Catherine of Siena to be a
safe environment for all students.
Thank you for your assistance
with this initiative.
Medical Concerns
If your son / daughter has any medical concerns, please
ensure that you inform the school. Information may be
shared directly with the classroom teacher / office. If
medication is required, forms will be sent for completion
by parents and the family doctor. All information is held
in confidence.
End of the day pick-up, please keep the
Doorways clear
In support of our Safe School procedures
here at Siena, we are asking the
doorways at the back be kept clear and
accessible for students to make their way
out to the school yard. It is imperative that
teachers are able to see a child’s parent
before allowing them to leave (Gr. 1-3). To
help with this, we ask parents/guardians to stay well
clear of the exit doors. This is a safety concern for our
students, we want to make sure they are not walking
home alone. We ask for your continued cooperation in
this very important safety procedure.
Many Hands, Many Lands, One Heart, One God

Attendance and Punctuality
All students are expected to attend
school regularly and punctually. In the
event that your child will be late or
absent, please call the school and
follow the prompts to leave a
message. This can be done 24 hours
a day. For students who are absent and for whom a call
is not received, we will attempt to contact you.
PLEASE CALL: 905-277-2448 Press # 1
Please leave the following information:




Date of the absence
Student’s full name
Grade level and teacher
Reason for absence
If the bell has rung, all students (Gr. 1-8) who
may be late, are to go to the back of the school
and join a line. If there are no students, and the
doors are closed you are to come to the front of
the school and obtain a Late Slip.
All students who arrive after 9:00 a.m. or 1:03 p.m.
must obtain a Late Slip.
Before School Hours Supervision
For your child’s safety, we request that children not
be on school property until supervision begins at
8:45 a.m.
Kindergarten students are to enter through the gates
from 8:45 – 9 a.m. Please do not drop off your child
earlier as there is no supervision.
Personal Electronic Devices for
Educational Purposes
The Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board
acknowledges the value of the use of technology for
learning. Students are permitted to register and use
personal electronic devices (PEDs) on board premises
and/or board sanctioned events for educational
purposes, under the direction of staff and only with
parent/guardian permission. Students may register their
PED for the purpose of connecting to the board wireless
network. Students are required to adhere to the student
“Personal Electronic Device Used with WI-FI Network
Student Agreement” (GF 337) and the “Network User
Application and Agreement.” (GF066) Please be
advised that the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District
School Board will not be responsible for any cost
incurred through the use of personal data plans.
PEDs are to be used responsibly and should not
interfere with learning; their use must comply with the
Catholic Code of Conduct, board policies and
procedures. Any personal communications (i.e., phone
calls, text messages, etc.) will continue to be directed
through the main office. Failure to comply with these
guidelines may result in a loss of PED privileges and/or
any other consequences deemed necessary by school
administration.
The school principal may authorize limited acceptable
uses of personal electronic devices during schoolsanctioned activities for a specific designated purpose
outside of instructional spaces and/or in common areas.
Students are responsible for the safety and security of
PEDs at all times and the Board assumes no
responsibility for lost, damaged or stolen devices.

Developing Mindsets that Promote Growth
NEW
What do we mean by “mindset”?
Mindsets change is not about picking up a few
pointers here and there. It’s about seeing things in a
new way… changing from a “judge and be-judged”
framework to a “learn-and-help learn” framework.
– Carol S. Dweck
Tips for Fostering a Growth Mindset:
Web Resource:
(all grades)
Tip # 6. Use Failures as an Opportunity for Reflection and Growth
National Library of Virtual
Manipulatives
http://nlvm.usu.edu/
 Ask: “What can you learn from this experience? What could you
try differently next time?”
 The power of “yet” (e.g. When you think you can’t do it, remind
yourself that you can’t do it YET.”
Family Math Activity K – 3:
Big Ideas:
Shapes of different
dimensions and their
properties can be described
mathematically.
 Use shape stickers to have them make a shape
picture. Try to use as many different shapes as
you can. Describe your picture and the shapes
in it. Ask why they used those shapes.
Family Math Activities 4-6: Symmetry
 With your child, identify all the symmetrical capital
letters.
Have your child sort the capital letters
according to the number of lines of symmetry they
have.
 Go on a symmetry hunt. With your child, find shapes,
objects, patterns and designs around your home that
have lines of symmetry. (e.g. Look at wallpaper, floor
tiles, pictures and designs on packaging)
Grades 7 & 8: Continuing
the Conversation about
Financial Literacy!
Let’s discuss how “Advertising” affects our
money decisions…
Which of the following advertising
techniques do you think is the most
effective at influencing your child’s
opinion of a product or service? Do they
agree?
1. Economic Appeal – this type of ad
presents the “great deal” (e.g. unlimited
texting after 6pm). Read the fine print.
2. Comfort and Enjoyment – attempts to
present a product in relation to
something that, although enjoyable, is
largely unrelated to the product/service.
The purpose of the ad may simply have
been to get your attention.
3. Scare Technique – the ads portray awful
consequences. (e.g. smoking ads
highlighting illness, acne creams before
and after photos)

Becoming familiar with shapes
and spatial relationships in
their environment will help
children grasp the principles
of geometry in later grades.

Tip # 6. Use Failures as an Opportunity for Reflection and Growth
National Library of Virtual
Manipulatives

 Ask: “What can you learn from this experience? What could you
try differently next time?”
 The power of “yet” (e.g. When you think you can’t do it, remind
yourself that you can’t do it YET.”
Family Math Activity K – 3:
Big Ideas:
Shapes of different
dimensions and their
properties can be described
mathematically.
 Use shape stickers to have them make a shape
picture. Try to use as many different shapes as
you can. Describe your picture and the shapes
in it. Ask why they used those shapes.
Family Math Activities 4-6: Symmetry
 With your child, identify all the symmetrical capital
letters.
Have your child sort the capital letters
according to the number of lines of symmetry they
have.
 Go on a symmetry hunt. With your child, find shapes,
objects, patterns and designs around your home that
have lines of symmetry. (e.g. Look at wallpaper, floor
tiles, pictures and designs on packaging)
Grades 7 & 8: Continuing
the Conversation about
Financial Literacy!
Let’s discuss how “Advertising” affects our
money decisions…
Which of the following advertising
techniques do you think is the most
effective at influencing your child’s
opinion of a product or service? Do they
agree?
1. Economic Appeal – this type of ad
presents the “great deal” (e.g. unlimited
texting after 6pm). Read the fine print.
2. Comfort and Enjoyment – attempts to
present a product in relation to
something that, although enjoyable, is
largely unrelated to the product/service.
The purpose of the ad may simply have
been to get your attention.
3. Scare Technique – the ads portray awful
consequences. (e.g. smoking ads
highlighting illness, acne creams before
and after photos)
“God paid a great price for you. So don’t become slaves to anyone else.” 1Corinthians 7: 23

WORKHOP SESSIONS
KEYNOTE SPEAKER
Dr. Susan Williams, Psychologist
Parent’s Guide to Reducing Stress and
Increasing Resilience in Children
Dr. Williams is currently the Director of the
Halton Centre for Cognitive Therapy and
Stress Reduction in Oakville.
She
maintained an appointment for 8 years as
Assistant Professor (PT) in the
Department
of
Psychiatry
and
Behavioural Neurosciences at McMaster
University where she conducted research
on prevention and intervention with
anxious and depressed children, provided
treatment in the child, adolescent, and
adult hospital programs, and trained residents and interns in
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). She has worked on the CBT
Unit at the former Clarke Institute of Psychiatry in Toronto (now
CAMH), at the Anxiety Treatment and Research Centre at St. Joseph’s
Healthcare in Hamilton, the Mood Disorders program at the former
Hamilton Psychiatric Hospital, the Adolescent Program and Eating
Disorders Clinic at McMaster University Medical Centre, and the Child
and Family Centre at Chedoke Hospital, Hamilton.
Children who are excessively stressed or anxious can underachieve
in school, have low self-esteem, be angry, sad and lonely, have
difficulty with schoolwork and have difficult family and peer
relationships. Parents have a significant impact on how well children
respond to stress and anxiety. Therefore, it is important that we, as
parents, teach ourselves healthy ways to deal with stress and anxiety
so we can pass on this knowledge to our children. We also need to
follow some fundamental parenting principles so children learn how
to self-regulate when stressed and anxious. Healthy habits learned
in childhood promote lifelong healthy habits and a happier and more
productive life.
This presentation will describe some reasons why children are more
stressed and anxious than before and help parents develop
resilience, reduce stress, improve their child’s overall well-being and
create a happier home. The presentation will be followed by a
question and answer period.
Keynote Address
9:30 a.m. – 10:30 p.m.
