Advent Prayer
Come, long‐expected Jesus. Excite in me a wonder at the wisdom and power of Your Father and ours. Receive my prayer as part of my service of the Lord who enlists me in God's own work for justice. Come, long‐expected Jesus. Excite in me a joy responsive to the Father's joy. I seek His will so I can serve with gladness, singing and love. Come, long‐expected Jesus. Excite in me the joy and love and peace it is right to bring to the manger of my Lord. Raise in me, too, sober reverence for the God who acted there, hearty gratitude for the life begun there, and spirited resolution to serve the Father and Son. I pray in the name of Jesus Christ, whose advent I hail. Amen Administrators’ Message…
Advent is a season of hope and celebration. We strive to prepare our hearts and our lives as
we wait in great anticipation for the coming of Jesus. The birth of Jesus signifies a new
beginning that heralds new hopes and dreams that light up our lives and give it new meaning.
Advent provides us an opportunity to bring students to realize that the world is still waiting for
the teachings of Jesus to wash over the world and influence our lives. It is a reminder that on
each day of Advent, we can reflect on Christ, seeking ways to break into our lives.
November was another great month at St. Catherine of Siena. We had our Gr. 5s go to the
Living Arts Centre, the FDKs and Gr. 1s went to a local farm, we had two outstanding Virtue
Assemblies on Conscience, there was a Family Movie Night, an exciting Intermediate
Volleyball season, we had a Dance presentation for the entire school, a moving Remembrance
Day ceremony, the Gr. 3 trip to Crawford Lake and to swimming, the Intermediates went to
watch Mocking Jay Part 1, and we had a great week of Bullying Awareness activities.
The month of December promises to be another busy and active month. Activities this month
include: two Virtue Assemblies on the virtue of Hope, the Miss. South Youth Faith Rally Day for
our Youth Faith Ambassadors, a visit to our intermediate students from motivational speaker
Chris Young, an FDK Christmas assembly, and our Nativity Play. Working together with the
church, we will celebrate School Reconciliation on Dec. 11 and Advent Mass on Dec. 18.
May the promise of Christmas help to show God’s boundless love for you and your family, and
may you be blessed with good health, prosperity and happiness throughout the New Year. We
take this opportunity to wish everyone a joyous Advent season, a Merry Christmas and a
Happy New Year.

Virtue of the Month: Hope
God helps up to keep working on a more peaceful
world even when we feel discouraged.
Our Daily Prayer for December:
Let us pray for the grace and courage to be people of
hope, people who can see, participate in and
contribute to God's goodness emerging around us.
AMEN
A hopeful person is....
†
inspired and inspires others
†
optimistic
†
one who seeks good things from life
†
one sees the good in the world
From the perspective of the Catholic Graduate
Expectations, a person of hope…
†
Sees more good than evil in the world
†
Acts legally and morally
May the God of hope fill you with all the joy and peace
in believing, so that you may abound in hope by the
power of the Holy Spirit. Romans: 15:13
Sometimes in life bad things happen to us that we
cannot explain. During these times we tend to get
mad at God for putting us through so much pain. We
forget God is always there for us and He does not
want to hurt us. When you feel sad and alone,
remember to never lose HOPE, pray to Jesus and
things will get better.
Please note: All Virtue information is included in the
front pages of your child’s agenda.

Ontario Catholic School Graduate
Expectations
Distinctive expectations for graduates of
Catholic schools are determined and
shaped by the vision and destiny of the
human person emerging from our faith
tradition. Catholic education views human
life as an integration of body, mind, and
spirit. Rooted in this vision, Catholic
education fosters the search for knowledge as a lifelong
spiritual and academic quest.
The Graduate is expected to be:
1. A discerning believer formed in the Catholic Faith
community who celebrates the signs and sacred mystery
of God's presence through word, sacrament, prayer,
forgiveness, reflection and moral living.
2. An effective communicator who speaks, writes and
listens honestly and sensitively, responding critically in
light of gospel values.
3. A reflective, creative and holistic thinker who
solves problems and makes responsible decisions with
an informed moral conscience for the common good.
4. A self-directed, responsible, lifelong learner who
develops and demonstrates their God-given potential.
5. A collaborative contributor who finds meaning,
dignity and vocation in work which respects the rights of
all and contributes to the common good.
6. A caring family member who attends to family,
school, parish, and the wider community.
7. A responsible citizen who gives witness to Catholic
social teaching by promoting peace, justice and the
sacredness of human life.

DPCDSB hosts Kindergarten entry
planning information for parents of
children with special needs
On Thursday, January 8, the Dufferin-Peel Catholic
District School Board’s Special Education and Support
Services Department will host a Kindergarten entry
planning information session. This meeting is for parents
and guardians of children with differing abilities which
affect their learning, such as vision, hearing, speech,
autism, physical/medical and/or developmental
delays in the cognitive and/or motor areas, who are
entering Kindergarten in September 2015. The meeting
will be held at the Catholic Education Centre from 7:00
p.m. – 8:30 p.m. For more information about this
session, call 905-890-0708 ext. 24011. (*Snow Date:

Outdoor Play
Snow season is here. Please
ensure that your child is properly
dressed for outdoor play in a
Canadian winter. It is a school
expectation that all students go
outside for recess for exercise
and fresh air. If your child is
unable to go outside for recess because of illness,
please consider keeping them home until they are
feeling better. We also ask that your child have a pair
of indoor shoes for classroom use, labeled with their
name for easy identification. Many students are not
remembering to bring a separate pair of shoes, and are
tracking the mud from the field into the classrooms,
hallways and bathrooms. Your help with this is
appreciated.
We would appreciate your support in reinforcing the
school rule that all snow stays on the ground. For
everyone’s safety we do not allow snowballs, kicking
snow, or any other snow\ice activity that could lead to
potential harm or injury.
Inclement Weather, School Closures and
Bus Cancellations
During the winter months inclement weather may cause
disruption to bus transportation and regular school
operations. A decision to cancel school transportation
and/or to close schools is usually made by 6:00 a.m. and
will be announced on the following radio stations:

means that buses are cancelled for the entire day.
Or, to indicate school closures, “The schools and
offices of the Peel District School Board and the
Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board have been

only in the COUNTY OF DUFFERIN, this does NOT
affect our school.

Attendance and Punctuality
Kiss ‘n’ Ride @ St. Catherine of Siena
All students are expected to attend school regularly and
punctually. In the event that your child will be late or
absent, please call the school and follow the prompts to
leave a message. This can be done 24 hours a day.
For students who are absent and for whom a call is not
received, we will attempt to contact you.
The driveway at the front
of the school is set up as
our Kiss ’n’ Ride, allowing
parents the opportunity to
drop off and pick up their children in a safe and effective
manner. To this end, the success of this requires the
mutual understanding and support of all our parents to
assure as smooth a transition as possible to the start
and end of each day.
If the bell has rung, all students (Gr. 1‐8) who may be late, are to go to the back of the school and join a line. If there are no students, and the doors are closed you are to come to the front of the school and obtain a Late Slip. Guidelines:

Follow the arrows on the driveway to the dropoff/pick-up area (in front on the Kindergarten yard).
Please do not use the Bus Loading zone (right next
to the sidewalk) as this area is meant for buses or
emergency vehicles.
Please leave the following information:





Pull up as far as you can, it allows more cars to use
the Kiss’n’Ride.

Do Not Park or Get out of Your Vehicle in this
area, even if only for a few seconds. Parents who
wish to get out of the car are asked to park in the
designated visitor parking in the front and at the side
of the school.

Students are to exit the vehicle on the passenger
side (right side)

Once your child has left the car, please exit right
away at the south end of the school, driveway closet
to the Fire Department.

Please drive slowly and carefully in these lanes at all
times.

Please do not walk your children through the Kiss’N
Ride lanes, this can be unsafe.

Before School Hours Supervision
For your child’s safety, we request that children not be
on school property until supervision begins at 8:45 a.m.
Lunch Drop-Off
With the new front door policy (locked), we encourage
students to bring their lunches with them in the morning.
If you are delivering your child’s lunch
to the school, we will open the doors at
noon. Please do not block the
doorway, and have your child’s lunch
labeled with their name and class, and
place it on the lunch table.
Please be reminded that the lunch hour is from
12:03 p.m. – 1:03 p.m. Where children stay for lunch
they will eat with their classmates and remain on school
property.
Medical Concerns
If your son / daughter has any medical concerns, please
ensure that you inform the school. Information may be
shared directly with the classroom teacher / office. If
medication is required, forms will be sent for completion
by parents and the family doctor. All information is held
in confidence.
The safety of all the children is our shared
concern and priority.

End of the day pick-up, please keep the
Doorways clear
In support of our Safe School procedures here at Siena,
we are asking the doorways at the back be kept clear
and accessible for students to make their way out to the
school yard. It is imperative that teachers are able to see
a child’s parent before allowing them to
leave (Gr. 1-3). To help with this, we
ask parents/guardians to stay well
clear of the exit doors. This is a
safety concern for our students, we
want to make sure they are not walking
home alone. We ask for your continued
cooperation in this very important
safety procedure.
Electronic Devices/Valuables
Students are asked not to bring to school any
valuables, items of importance, toys, or other items
valuable to them. Examples of these items may include
(but not limited to) Game Boys, expensive sports
equipment, cell phones, MP3 players, trading cards,
cameras, etc. The school will not assume
responsibility for the care and loss of these items.
Cell phones, MP3 players, Ipods, digital cameras and all
PEDs are not to be used on school property. It is against
School and Board policy to have these devices on
school property or at any school sanctioned event.
Volunteers - Criminal Reference Check
Anyone working in our school as a new
employee or volunteer must have a
Criminal Reference Check completed by
the Peel Police.
We would love volunteers to help in
the school, and especially on field trips. If you’re
interested, we recommend you get a criminal reference
check right away, as they usually take three weeks. CRC
are free of charge for volunteers. Forms are
available from the office.

month’s contest is... Star Wars, R2 D2. Congratulations
to Miss Menezes and her grade 1/2 students for their
entry!!! All of the entries were amazing and made it very

"Round the Bend" Farm Excursion was a success. The
students had a wonderful experience learning about
animals, vegetables and how a farm is a very busy
place. The students enjoyed the hearty soup that was
prepared by the classroom teachers after the visit, made
with the hearty vegetables the students helped pick at
the farm. Thank you to all parent volunteers, without you
the excursion would not have been possible.

It seems like just yesterday that my wife and I were explaining to our children what Christmas was really all about. And, in between, trying to outsmart them with hints of Santa's upcoming visit and offering advice on what positive behavioral patterns should be exhibited to increase the chances of the jolly old man visiting our house on Christmas Eve. I recall them waking up as early as 6:00 am wanting to go to the tree and see what Santa had brought; both were so afraid to go alone. I recall those days, so many years ago, with a smile. For those of you with young children, enjoy this time and the beautiful family experiences that naturally occur this time of year. I hope that you will, as we have, cherish them for years to come. And when they get older and sleep in on Christmas Day, you can reminisce of what they did 10‐20 years ago and smile, because it was such a special family moment. One thing I can tell you from experience is that your older children will not be waking you up. In fact, you will be waking them up! May God bless you, your family and friends with a Christ‐filled, enjoyable and safe Christmas. Geometry
The ability to identify and describe shapes, sizes, positions,
directions, and movement is important in many work
situations, such as construction and design, as well as in
creating and understanding art. Becoming familiar with shapes
and spatial relationships in their environment will help
children grasp the principles of geometry in later grades.
Family Math Activities
K-3

Bake Christmas Cookies.
Use a variety of shapes to make
sugar cookies. Talk about how to
get the most out of the dough by moving the shapes around.

Play "I spy", looking for different shapes. "I spy something that is round." "I spy something
that is rectangular." "I spy something that looks like a cone."

Hide a toy and use directional language to help your child find it. Give clues using words and
phrases such as up, down, over, under, between, through, and on top of.

Build structures using blocks or old boxes. Discuss the need to build a strong base. Ask your
child, “which shapes stack easily, and why?”

Ask your child to draw a picture of your street, neighbourhood, or town for Santa. Talk
about where your home is in relation to a neighbour's home or the corner store. Use directional
words and phrases like beside and to the right of.
Grades 4-6

Ask your child to help you wrap. Take note of the features of the different shaped boxes
(number of sides, how many are the same, different, hardest to wrap, why?)

Look at the wrapping paper. Take note of the patterns, do any of the shapes rotate, translate
or reflect (turn, slide or rotate)?

ADVENT FAMILY PRAYER
FIRST FRIDAY of the Month
December 5th
The Blessed Sacrament will be exposed all
day in Church with adoration at 7:30pm.
Come and spend some time with Jesus.
Lord, help us to prepare our hearts
for the coming of your son Jesus.
Help us to focus on your light
during this holy season.
Draw our family closer together as we move
through Advent toward the feast of your Son’s
birth.
Each week we light a new candle
on our Advent Wreath.
We place our HOPE in you.
We pray for PEACE in our hearts,
our homes and in the world.
We wait with JOY for your coming
anew into our hearts.
And we thank you for your
everlasting LOVE this Christmas.
The evergreens on the wreath remind us
that your life in us never dies.
Its circular shape shows us your love
has no beginning or end.
The light from its candles will grow brighter
each week as Christmas draws near.
Draw our family closer to you in holiness as we
reflect in wonder and awe on the birth of your Son
in a lowly manger in Bethlehem.
And may your Spirit grow in us,
dispelling the darkness and sin of the world.
