A Summer Blessing
As you leave school for the summer,
And lay aside textbooks and notebooks,
pencils, computers and pens
Go with God, for God goes with you.
As you make choices about places to go,
Friends with whom you will spend time,
don’t compromise yourself,
Go with God, for God knows your value.
As you enjoy the summer sun
and the summer’s cool waters, be wise and be safe.
Respect the beauty of the earth as God’s gift to you.
Go with God, for God created you.
As you go to quiet places to reflect, pray and be
nourished,
enjoy the peace and the beauty of private space and
time off
Go with God, for God always goes with you. Amen
A Person of Fairness…

Shows good sportsmanship at all times
Refuses to twist rules to avoid consequences
Works to bring about peaceful solutions to problems

Can balance their own rights and responsibilities
with those of others
We are made by God to live together, to share and to
help each other. You can’t be a Christian alone.
Christianity is all about living together in community.
Fairness, the belief that everyone deserves an
opportunity to succeed, is not always about making
things exactly equal. Some people need a bit more time,
space, money, and support to have an equal chance to
succeed. And they deserve that chance. Jesus spent a

YEAR END MESSAGE
It has been a busy, exciting and productive year! Thank
you all for welcoming me to this wonderful community. I
feel truly grateful for the opportunity to work with
students, staff and parents of St. Vincent the Paul School
community.
It has been a blessing to watch our students display hard
work, dedication, teamwork, leadership, responsibility
and many other positive qualities. They are definitely on
their way to becoming responsible citizens and
contributing members of this society. In addition to
fulfilling their academic responsibilities, our students
have been active participants in liturgical celebrations,
social outreach initiatives, athletic events, chess
tournaments, Christmas concert, choir, environmental
stewardship and diversity events.
All this would not have been possible without support
and leadership from our staff who have spent hours
before school, during lunch and after school sharing their
many talents with our students and at the same time,
modelling leadership, gospel values and virtues. They
have definitely infused fun and a sense of
accomplishment throughout this school year.
I have been impressed by commitment and support from
parents. The Catholic School Council members and
parent volunteers have worked hard this year enriching
our students’ school experiences.
Thank you all for providing valuable feedback to us; your
concerns result in continuous school improvement, while
your words of appreciation give us energy to continue
meeting our students’ needs.
Thank you to the staff, students and parents for showing
that Catholic education makes difference.
I would like to wish good luck to our students who are
moving on whether it is high school or another
elementary school. Thank you for everything you have
contributed to St. Vincent de Paul school.
We also bid farewell to Ms. Anderson who has accepted
a teaching position at a school in Brampton. Ms.
Anderson will be greatly missed; her talents and
dedication will definitely be appreciated by students at
her new school.
Mr. Do Couto is retiring! His smiling face and positive
attitude will be missed around the school. We do wish
him all the best in the new chapter of his life.
YEAR END MASS
Our end of the year mass will be held on Friday, June 19
at 10:00 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Church. We are fortunate to
be able to come together as a Catholic community to
celebrate our faith.
CROWNING OF MARY
We would like to thank the Rosary Apostolates who
organized two wonderful Crowning of Mary liturgies last
month. Although our students did not have much time to
practice, they did an amazing job acting, reading and
praying.
SACRAMENTS
Congratulations to our Grade 8 students who received the
sacrament of Confirmation last month. Thank you to the
School Council for organizing the Celebration of
Sacraments and for providing the gifts and treats for our
grade 2 and 8 students.
SACRAMENT OF CONFIRMATION
The Archdiocese of Toronto has announced that the
Sacrament of Confirmation will now be administered to
students in their Grade 7 year. Our local Pastors and parish
staff have been informed of the change. For the school
year 2015-2016, a “double cohort” of students will prepare
to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation – both the Grade
“A Love of Christ and a Love of Learning”
7 students, along with the Grade 8s. Each parish will
decide, based on local circumstances, how best to handle
this in the 2015-2016 school year. For some, it might
mean a combined ceremony, while for others, it will
mean 2 separate ceremonies, perhaps with one in the fall
and the other in the spring. The local parishes will
communicate their plans to the principals of the schools
they serve.
Our schools will work in conjunction with the Archdiocese
of Toronto and the local parishes to ensure that our
students are prepared for the Sacrament of
Confirmation.
It is our continued hope that parish, family and school will
help our young people prepare for full initiation into the
Church. With the Gifts of the Holy Spirit bestowed upon
the confirmandi, they will be prepared to assist with
leadership positions within their school, parish and
greater community during their last year/s of elementary
school and to aid in the transition to secondary school.
OUR CATHOLIC
SCHOOL
HERITAGE
17. How was the
corporation tax issue finally solved?
In 1962, the Ontario Separate School Trustees’
Association presented Premier John Robarts a brief which
outlined the probable bankruptcy of some urban
separate school boards and the inferior salaries, teacher
qualifications, school accommodation, and programs
compared with those of the public schools. The
government began providing to the separate school
boards grants which compensated for their lack of
corporate assessment. Separate school boards were able
to erect new schools and additions with gymnasiums,
libraries, kindergarten rooms, and special education
facilities.
With the economic downturn in Ontario, the government
began imposing limits to what school boards could spend.
If any board wished to exceed the expenditure limit, it
would receive no grant to accompany the amount of
money spent over the limit. Because the Metropolitan
Toronto Board and the Ottawa Board of Education were so
rich from corporation and public utility assessment, they
received no grants. The other urban public school boards
received only a small amount of grants. On the other hand,
the separate school boards existed on government grants
for 80% to 99%, depending on their amount of assessment.
Thus, separate school boards were confined to the
government’s expenditure ceilings, while public school
boards exercised their freedom to spend considerably over
the ceilings. Financial inequity returned and remained.
19. How did the Ontario government solve separate
school financial inequity?
In 1990, the Supreme Court of Canada judged that the
Canadian Constitution’s Charter of Rights and Freedoms
entitles Francophones, where numbers warrant, to their
own school boards. French-language district school boards
and French-language Catholic district school boards were
created. Consequently, Ontario then had four school
systems. Three of them - the English-language Catholic
district school boards, the French-language Catholic district
school boards and the French-language district school
boards - had very little access to corporate assessment.
One of them – the English-language district school boards
– possessed most of the province’s corporate assessment
and, therefore, ability to spend much more than their
counterparts on education. Faced with this inequity and a
court challenge it was convinced it would lose, the
government took the only logical and fair step. It abolished
the power of all school boards to tax and took over all
education funding. Now each pupil, no matter which type
of school he or she attends, receives the same per-pupil
funding from the government. After 150 years of sacrifice
and hardship, Catholic school boards have achieved
financial equity.
20. What has been the history of Catholic education in
the Dufferin-Peel Region?
18. How did financial inequity return in the 1970s?
Catholic schools were fundamental in the early
development of our region. With the support of local
“A Love of Christ and a Love of Learning”
parishes, bishops and parents, Catholic schools were
formed as an expression of a world view differing from
other schools. In 1837 in Mono Township (Dufferin
County), a school was dedicated and housed at St.
Cyprian Church. Later, a log church housed a local
Catholic school at St Patrick‘s in Melanchthon Township.
In 1864, the first formal Catholic school was developed in
Melanchthon Township. In Peel, Catholic schools were
formed well before confederation as an expression of the
Catholic communities developing in our region. A more
detailed history of our Catholic education in our region
can be found in the book entitled Catholic Education in
Dufferin Peel - A Story Worth Telling.
WONDERFUL TALENT!
Mme. Ciminelli and Mrs. Murphy, we would like to
congratulate our St. Vincent de Paul school choir for their
hard work and commitment throughout the year. What a
remarkable year: supporting our school Masses, liturgies,
virtue ceremonies, performances at Sunrise Retirement
Home and Christmas concert for our school, church, and
greater community. Our choir will be celebrating their
successful year with a special pizza luncheon on
Wednesday, June 10. Special thanks to parents, and
guardians who supported our fantastic singers and hope
to see you again next year. Have a great and safe
summer!
Thank you to Mme. Ciminelli and Mrs. Murphy for giving
up many lunch hours to practice with the students!
DIVERSITY CLUB
This was the first full year of our St. Vincent de Paul
Diversity Club. The turnout was amazing – with more than
30 members! Our mission statement is “St. Vincent de Paul
Catholic Elementary School is committed to making
everyone feel safe and welcome, treating others with
respect and celebrating diversity. Our school community
respects everyone’s diverse skills, achievements, culture,
race, skin colour, physical challenges, abilities and gender.
We are “ONE” community.”
This year we focused on such things as Black History
Month, Bullying Awareness and Prevention, Kindergarten
Heritage Day, and many more. A select few of our
members had an opportunity to attend the Mississauga
East Diversity Conference. Our year end event takes place
on Monday, June 1, 2015. It is St. Vincent de Paul’s first
Girls Night In with the focus on health and fitness and the
girls will partake in activities such as Zumba and Yoga. We
expect a fun-filled evening!! Mrs. Pileggi and Ms. Heinisch
would like to thank all members for their hard work and
dedication – we hope to see you next year!
Thank you Ms. Heinisch, Mrs. Pileggi and Ms. Grabowski
for your dedication and leadership!
ATHLETICS
The 2014-2015 school year at St. Vincent de Paul School
proved to be a great year for our young athletes.
Sportsmanship and athletic abilities were demonstrated on
the volleyball and basketball courts, cross-country paths,
soccer fields and even in the rink! Our young athletes were
able to grow a new set of skills, while mastering age
appropriate sportsmanship behaviours. Together we grew
as Catholic life-long learners both on and off the courts.
The Boys’ Soccer tournament will take place on Friday,
June 11, 2015.
Thank you to Ms. Khoury, Ms. Grabowski and Mr. Antoniw
for coaching our teams this year.

SCHOOL ORGANIZATION FOR SEPTEMBER 2015
Tentative class lists for the school year 2015-2016 have
been created. We have made every effort to ensure the
best possible placement for your child. Please be reminded
that all class placements will remain tentative until
September enrollment is finalized.
ONLINE REPORTING TOOL
The Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School board has
developed a new way to help nurture a safe, caring and
inclusive school environment. The Online Reporting Tool is
intended for students in grades 3 – 8 who become aware
of bullying incidents and negative behaviours. The student
can simply ‘click’ on the link found on our school’s website
to fill out the report. The report will then be directly
emailed to the principal and/or vice principal and will be
dealt with accordingly.
It is important to recognize that the Online Reporting Tool
is an alternate reporting option. It is best practice to speak
directly with a responsible adult at home and/or in the
school.
REPORT CARDS
Reports cards will be sent home with students on
Wednesday, June 24, 2015. Please sign and return the last
page by Thursday, June 25, 2015. Please contact your
child’s teacher if you have any questions.
EQAO Parent Tips:
Celebrate your child’s successes and hard work
each day.
Remind your child that the assessment will have
questions asking them things that they have
already learned in class.

WELCOME TO KINDERGARTEN
Thank you to Ms. Franchino, Ms. Grabowski and Mrs.
Sita-Sills for organizing a very successful Welcome to
Kindergarten Night last week. I would also like to thank
Mrs. Attard for representing the CSC and encouraging
parents who are new to the SVdP community to support
our students. Thank you to Ms. Murray for being available
to answer any questions related to before and after
school child care.
Our youngest students had an opportunity to experience
some worthwhile activities to help with their transition to
the school setting, while their parents had a chance to
meet the FDK team, get familiar with the program and
Pa
discuss any concerns they might have had. Each child
wh
took home a bag of useful supplies to practice these
preschool skills, such as, reading readiness, number and
letter awareness and the like.
This initiative was supported by The Learning
Partnership, a national not-for-profit organization
dedicated to championing a strong education system in
Canada.
Dufferin-Peel is offering the Full-Day Kindergarten program
in all 123 Catholic elementary schools in Mississauga,
Brampton, Caledon, Bolton and Orangeville. Registration
materials are available for pick-up at the schools.
Parents/guardians are to register their child in person at
their designated Catholic school. To find out which Catholic

SUPERVISION OF STUDENTS
Supervision begins at 8:45 a.m. and ends at 3:30 p.m.
Please do not bring/send your children to school earlier
than this time. Given safety concerns, it is not a good idea
to leave your children outside unattended as student
supervision in the yard begins at 8:45 and not before.
Please make other arrangements for the care of your
children prior to 8:45 a.m. Please meet your child at the
back of the school at 3:30p.m. for dismissal. Students
should not be leaving the building through the front door.
children off in the morning in our Kiss and Ride program.
Our driveway is made safer when everyone cooperates.
Please ensure you have pulled up to the front of the drop
line to let children in or out of your car. If you need to park
your vehicle for a few minutes, please use the parking lot
in order to ensure everyone’s safety. The driveway gets
very congested as 9:00 a.m. approaches, and many
students are arriving after the bell rings. Please be aware
that it is our expectation that children arrive at school on
time and prepared to work.
LATE ARRIVALS
LUNCH HOUR ROUTINES
A reminder that students who regularly stay for lunch are
NOT permitted to leave school property without a
signed and dated note from parents each time they
leave school grounds. Students either go home for lunch
or stay in school for lunch. Thank you for supporting this
important safety routine.
MINIMIZING DISRUPTIONS
We appreciate continued parental help and support in
minimizing disruptions to classes, whenever possible.
If you wish to discuss something with your child’s teacher,
we ask that you set up an appointment with the teacher.
Approaching the teacher, before, during and/or after
school makes it difficult for the teacher to focus on
her/his students. This also becomes a safety issue. Please
leave a message with the office and the teacher will call
you back.
If your child is late, please have him/her report to the
office. PLEASE DO NOT ESCORT YOUR CHILD TO CLASS.
Please send a note in advance, to your child’s teacher
when your child needs to be picked up early, then meet
them in the office and sign them out.
If delivering lunches to your child at school, please write
your child’s and teacher’s names on lunch bags and leave
them on the lunch table in the front foyer. This would be
greatly appreciated.
PARENTS IN THE SCHOOL YARD
Thank you for your cooperation, parents and caregivers
for not entering the schoolyard when dropping off your
children.
DRIVEWAY/ KISS AND RIDE SAFETY
Many thanks to parents / guardians who have been using
the correct and safe procedure for dropping their
All students from FDK to Grade 8, should start school on
time. This prevents interruption of classes and loss of
information for the students. A student is considered late
if the school bell has rung and they are not in line and
entering the school with their classmates. Being
consistently and continuously late interrupts the classroom
during lessons, creates delays in the office and sets a poor
example for those who do arrive on time. Please encourage
and assist your child(ren) to recognize that punctuality is a
responsibility which all students should be developing.
WARM WEATHER DRESS CODE
Students are expected to dress in an appropriate manner
and wear attire that is suitable for the school environment.
Boys must wear t-shirts with sleeves. Girls are not to wear
anything strapless or have bare midriffs. Tank tops and
crop tops are not acceptable nor are very short shorts.
Shirts with offensive language or pictures are not allowed.
If students do not adhere to these guidelines, parents will
be called and/or alternative attire will be provided. We
trust you will assist us in maintaining a sense of dignity and
modesty within our Catholic learning environment.
SABRINA’S LAW-ANAPHYLAXIS
If your child has a severe reaction to peanuts, peanut byproducts, bee/wasp stings or any other allergies or medical
conditions, please let the school know as soon as possible.
It is essential that the information you provide to us is
accurate and up-to-date.
There are various forms which need to be completed by
you and your family doctor if it is necessary to store an
epipen/medication at school. We continue to have
students with severe, life threatening allergies to nuts and
peanuts. Although this may or may not affect your child’s
class directly, we require your continue cooperation in
“A Love of Christ and a Love of Learning”
sending foods to school that are free of peanuts, nuts, or
their by-products. We cannot guarantee that any
classroom is nut free, but we are attempting to minimize
the exposure and keep everyone as safe and healthy as
possible.
IMMUNIZATION
Ontario Law (Immunization of School Pupils Act, 1990)
requires all school age children to be immunized against
Diphtheria, Tetanus, Polio, Measles, Mumps and Rubella.
The law requires Peel Health to keep up-to-date records
of your child’s immunization. In the past we have had a
number of students receive letters of suspension from
school due to records not being updated at the Health
Department. It is your responsibility to forward the
information to Peel Health. Whenever you have your child
immunized, inform the Health Department. Your child,
before turning age 7, must have the Age 4-6 Booster for
Diphtheria, Tetanus, Polio. All necessary immunization
records for your children must be sent to Peel Health. You
may fax your up-to-date information to Peel Health at
840-7144 or call 791- 7800 ext. 7661.
EMERGENCY PROCEDURES
St. Vincent de Paul School is required to conduct three
fire drills in the fall and three in the spring. We will also
be conducting two lockdown drills throughout the year.
These drills are standard practice across the Board and
ensure that in the event of a real emergency our students
and staff can respond quickly and appropriately. If you
have any questions or concerns regarding these drills
please speak to your child’s teacher or the main office.
In rare circumstances, our students and staff may need to
evacuate the building as a result of an emergency in the
building or in the nearby community. Our evacuation
site is John Cabot Secondary School. Board regulations
and safety precautions require this contingency plan.
Should an evacuation be necessary, you will be notified
as soon as possible and your child will be held at John
Cabot School until we make direct contact with a
parent/guardian.
CUSTODY OF CHILDREN
On rare occasions, we are faced with difficult situations
in which non-custodial parents arrive at our school asking
to visit with their child or take their child home after
school. We are best able to serve and protect the child
when we are made aware of legal custody arrangements,
visitation rights and special instructions. If legal custody
matters affect your family, please ensure that our office
and classroom teachers are aware of custodial agreements
between parents. We require that a copy of all legal
documentation be kept in your child’s school records.
ARE YOU MOVING?
If you are moving over the summer, please notify the
office. It is important that we are informed so that we can
provide you with the necessary transfer forms and arrange
for your child’ Ontario Student Record to be sent to his/her
new school.
CATHOLIC SCHOOL COUNCIL ELECTIONS
A reminder that the elections for the Catholic School
Council for St. Vincent de Paul Catholic School will be held
in September. Nomination forms for parent/guardian
representatives will be available in the main office of the
school the first week of September. Eligible
parent/guardians are encouraged to complete a
nomination form and become a parent/guardian
representative. It is a great way to get to know your school
community better and make a difference! Electors must be
parents or guardians of students enrolled in the school and
electors or their spouses must be separate school
supporters. Parents wishing to be elected, must be present
at the September meeting. We encourage everyone to
come out and get involved in your child’s education. Our
first School Council Meeting for the 2015-2016 school year
will be announced early in September.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank our School
Council for their time, effort and generosity this school
year.
