Assistant Secretary
Dear God,
You have done such a marvelous job of creating us and the world around us.
Sometimes life is easy… sometimes life is challenging.
We know that you do not want us to suffer.
We know that you do not want us to make other people suffer.

We come to you now asking for the grace and strength to keep a sense of self-control.
We hope that by remaining calm in the middle of difficult situations, we can

anticipation and excitement. We hope that everyone had a very Merry Christmas and
began the New Year with enthusiasm for a fresh start.
Once again the kindness, love and generosity of our St. Timothy community enabled many
families to have the opportunity to open gifts and enjoy some wholesome meals that
might not have otherwise have happened. We are a proud Catholic school community and
are true to our faith and teachings of Christ in that “by giving we shall all receive.”
We have returned to a beautiful, clean school and my sincere thanks go out to our entire
custodial staff of Mr. Black, Mrs. Binder and our head custodian Mr. Blasko. The New
Year has just begun and our students and staff are working hard and striving towards
the important goals for the remainder of the year. We will also see the many other great
facets of student life continuing with our skating program, various sports teams including
our basketball and hockey teams and our winter board game club. We are preparing a
great event in the second half of this school year with the Charlie Brown musical which
will allow the talents of many our students to be show cased on stage.
We welcome new families who have recently joined us and we wish our new students
great success while attending St. Timothy. Our school enrollment currently sits at 580.
We also welcome all parents to our next School council meeting being held on February
2nd.

Winter Weather
During the winter season, many parents are concerned about
school policy on outdoor recess. When the temperature or
equivalent wind chill temperature is minus -25°C or lower,
students should not go outside for recess. Dufferin-Peel C.D.S.B.
Policy uses a wind chill factor of
-20° C as a determining factor for modified recess. We ask that
students come dressed appropriately with hats, gloves, mittens
etc. Where possible, please put identification on your child’s
belongings. Please note that all students should have indoor
shoes during the winter months so that the classrooms are kept
as clean and dry as possible. Thank you in advance for your
support and cooperation.

Our Catholic School Heritage
Catholics wanted separate schools where all the beliefs of the
Catholic Church would be taught, where the pupils would live their
faith in a
sacramental and community manner in proximity to the parish
church and priest, and where religion would permeate the reading,
literature and history curriculum. As modern times arrived, the
multiculturalism of the public school’s student body necessitated
the eradication of the teaching of Christianity. Catholics had to
make many sacrifices to send their children to separate schools in
these early years. The United Legislature of Canada East and
Canada West roughly had consisted of members advocating nondenominational common schools and half were in favour of them. As
a result, separate school legislation
was designed with a number of obstacles to their existence:
1. Catholics could establish and support a separate school but had to
continue to pay common school taxes. They were in effect then
paying tuition for their children in the separate schools
2. The separate schools had no permanence of existence. If the
local common school board hired a Catholic as one of its teachers,
then the separate school ceased to exist. This resulted in Catholic
schools opening and closing in the early years.
3. In the cities, the separate school board required the permission
of the common school board to open a new or an additional separate
school.
4. The legislation required twelve Catholic heads of family resident
with a city, town or township common school section. The townships’
common school sections were so small that often there were not
twelve resident Catholic families. These obstacles were gradually
removed throughout the 1850’s and 60’s. Double taxation was
eliminated. It no longer mattered if there was a Catholic teaching in
the common school. Catholic school boards no longer needed
permission of the common school board to open a new or additional
school. The number of Catholic heads of family to establish a
separate school was lowered from twelve to five and as a result, the
number of separate schools grew considerably.

Parents from St. Timothy School are invited to the presentation
“ Facebook 101 + Twitter – Tools to Increase you Privacy and
Security” on March 1 at St. Phillip Elementary School (905) 3068420, or, on March 3 at St,. Edmund Elementary School (905) 2778962. The presentation is from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Please RSVP

In December, auditions were held for all students in grades 4-8 who
were interested in performing in this year’s school musical. It was a
wonderful turnout, which once again boasted all of the amazing talent
here at St. Timothy School.
After much deliberation and hair pulling, the ‘artistic team’ for our
show finally came up with our awesome cast of 40! Students will be
rehearsing beginning in early January through to May. We will be
assembling our backstage crew in February. Students should listen to
the announcements for details if they would like to be involved in
working backstage, helping with lighting, selling tickets and ushering.
Evening performances will take place during Education Week, on
Wednesday, May 4th and Thursday, May 5th. Details regarding
purchasing tickets will follow at a later date.
*If there are any parents/guardians interested in donating time and
talents to help us to build some set/prop pieces, please contact Mrs.
Hyde.
Congratulations to all students who had the courage to audition for our
musical. You should be very proud of yourselves. Thank you to the
St. Timothy community for always supporting the artistic endeavours
of your children. We are very excited to get started!
