TIMOTHY SCHOOL PAGE 4 St. Timothy presents…You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown Information…Just a click away! Check out St. Timothy’s website at http://www.dpcdsb.org/TMTHY Our Catholic School Heritage Catholics wanted separate schools where all the beliefs of the Catholic Church would be taught, where the pupils would live their faith in a sacramental and community manner in proximity to the parish church and priest, and where religion would permeate the reading, literature and history curriculum. As modern times arrived, the multiculturalism of the public school’s student body necessitated the eradication of the teaching of Christianity. Catholics had to make many sacrifices to send their children to separate schools in these early years. The United Legislature of Canada East and Canada West roughly had consisted of members advocating nondenominational common schools and half were in favour of them. As a result, separate school legislation was designed with a number of obstacles to their existence: 1. Catholics could establish and support a separate school but had to continue to pay common school taxes. They were in effect then paying tuition for their children in the separate schools 2. The separate schools had no permanence of existence. If the local common school board hired a Catholic as one of its teachers, then the separate school ceased to exist. This resulted in Catholic schools opening and closing in the early years. 3. In the cities, the separate school board required the permission of the common school board to open a new or an additional separate school. 4. The legislation required twelve Catholic heads of family resident with a city, town or township common school section. The townships’ common school sections were so small that often there were not twelve resident Catholic families. These obstacles were gradually removed throughout the 1850’s and 60’s. Double taxation was eliminated. It no longer mattered if there was a Catholic teaching in the common school. Catholic school boards no longer needed permission of the common school board to open a new or additional school. The number of Catholic heads of family to establish a separate school was lowered from twelve to five and as a result, the number of separate schools grew considerably. FACEBOOK 101 + TWITTER Parents from St. Timothy School are invited to the presentation “ Facebook 101 + Twitter – Tools to Increase you Privacy and Security” on March 1 at St. Phillip Elementary School (905) 3068420, or, on March 3 at St,. In December, auditions were held for all students in grades 4-8 who were interested in performing in this year’s school musical. It was a wonderful turnout, which once again boasted all of the amazing talent here at St. Timothy School. After much deliberation and hair pulling, the ‘artistic team’ for our show finally came up with our awesome cast of 40! Students will be rehearsing beginning in early January through to May. We will be assembling our backstage crew in February. Students should listen to the announcements for details if they would like to be involved in working backstage, helping with lighting, selling tickets and ushering. Evening performances will take place during Education Week, on Wednesday, May 4th and Thursday, May 5th. Details regarding purchasing tickets will follow at a later date. *If there are any parents/guardians interested in donating time and talents to help us to build some set/prop pieces, please contact Mrs. Hyde. Congratulations to all students who had the courage to audition for our musical. You should be very proud of yourselves. Thank you to the St. Timothy community for always supporting the artistic endeavours of your children. We are very excited to get started!
