We are able to control how we react to what happens around us. We may at times react to a situation that is hurtful or disrespectful, and we know that through prayer, reflection, and concentration, we can become better at demonstrating self-control. A person with SELF-CONTROL is patient knows how to wait his/her turn can calm him/herself down and think before reacting to situations can think things through and do what is best for everyone DATES TO REMEMBER For all holidays and PA Days, refer to 2014-2015 School Year Board Calendar in Student Agendas or visit www.dpcdsb.org PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITY DAYS Term 1: Assessment, Evaluation, Reporting of Pupil Progress - NO CLASSES Monday, January 19, 2015. Communication via e-mail is being sent to parents who have provided us with their e-mail addresses and have completed Canada’s AntiSpam Legislation (CASL) Consent Form. Hard copies of these communication items are available in the office, and will be sent home with students whose parents have not provided us with an e-mail address and consent form. NEW CONCUSSION GUIDELINES Concussions are serious brain injuries. Ensuring that all students receiving a hit/bump to the head, at school, receive the care and treatment required, all schools of the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board have procedures in place. It has always been a standard procedure for a parent to be notified, when a child receives a hit/bump to the head. Please find a pamphlet attached that outlines important information about concussions, as well as treatment guidelines. The new guidelines include a 10-phase process for supporting a student’s Return to Activity. Working in partnership with parents, the school administration and school psychology staff will monitor a child’s progress through the 10 phases. For further information, feel free to contact the school. E.Q.A.O. DATES The provincial Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) has designated the dates for the Primary and Junior Divisions Assessments of Reading, Writing, and Mathematics. We request that parents of Grades 3 and 6 students refrain from booking vacations or other appointments that would result in their child(ren) being away from school during the period of May 25 to June 5, 2015. More specific dates, times, and information for our school will follow in the coming months. www.dpcdsb.org/TMTHY Page 6 of 8 JANUARY 2015 St. Timothy, whose name our school bears, was a co-worker of St. Paul in spreading the Gospel to the Gentile world. As he is described in Paul’s letters, Timothy was young and timid by nature. He was born in Lystra, Asia Minor. His father was Greek and his mother, Eunice, was a devout Jew who instilled in her son a warm, vibrant faith nourished in the scriptures. Paul converted Timothy to Christianity about the year 47. Paul had deep affection for the young man and encouraged him to be steadfast in his ministry. Timothy was with Paul on many of his journeys and became his close friend and companion. Tradition reports that Timothy was martyred under Emperor Nerva in AD 97. We celebrate the Feast Day of St. Timothy on January 26 each year. As a community rooted in faith, we would like to extend a warm invitation to all parents/guardians to join us in prayer and the celebration of the Eucharist during mass in our gym on January 26th at 9:30 AM. “The Spirit God has given us is no cowardly spirit, but one that makes us strong, loving and wise.” (2 Timothy 1:7) WINTER REMINDERS During the winter season, the school receives a number of calls from concerned parents as to how we determine when children will or will not be allowed outside for recess. As per Dufferin‐Peel CDSB Policy, when the temperature or equivalent with the wind chill factor reaches ‐25°C, students shall be kept indoors. When the temperature is -20°C or colder, the amount of time outdoors may be reduced. Please ensure your child has indoor shoes and appropriate outdoor winter clothing. Reminder that students should stay off snow banks and ice patches, and that snow stays on the ground! St. Timothy School Newsletter INTERMEDIATE HOCKEY TEAM We did it again, Timothy Titans! We won another gold for the school! With a lot of team effort and heart, the Intermediate Hockey Team played well and defeated many other skilled teams in the round robin, but it all came down to the finals. After a close game against All Saints, we were matched up against St. Barbara in the final round. The Titans played solid offence and defense as we came back from a 2 - 0 deficit. Our goalie, Liam S., stood strong to keep us in the game, as we were able to come from behind with two amazing goals from Brayden H. It all came down to final minute of the game as St. Barbara was coming on strong with 6 players on the ice. Magnificently, the boys and girls all came in clutch, playing amazing defense which led to an empty netter scored by John N. to seal the deal! The team members certainly do not take all of the credit, as we all would like to extend a special thank you to our amazing coaches, Mr. Riopel and Mr. Allen for teaching us how to play like a team and their encouragement led us to improve and develop as the games went on. Now only one thing left to say … GO, TITANS, GOLD! Congratulations to all the team members and coaches!
