November News
(FDK Room #105)
Last month. . .
... two interests developed in our classroom.
1) A Puppet Theatre
The students began creating puppets using a range of open ended materials. Since
we had nowhere to present our puppet shows, we decided to design and build a
puppet theatre! Our student created puppet shows allowed students to develop
oral language and expression and participate in oral retell of familiar stories and
movies, in addition to communicating their ideas verbally through the use of
puppets. The learning continued as students discovered the world of media and
made posters to advertise their upcoming shows.
2) A Haunted House
The provocation for our “Haunted House” was the literary work by Eve Bunting
“The Haunted House”. Students used their senses (What I SEE, HEAR, FEEL) to
develop a plan for the design and construction of our very own haunted house. In
addition, the students were exposed to “Halloween” poetry, another genre of
literature, and a discussion and study of rhyming words. In class, we co-created a
list of Halloween vocabulary which provided opportunities for students to label
their Halloween drawings/decorations and write on this theme-related topic. Also,
students explored numeracy and patterning with our Monster Eyeball and Ghost
Beading games. Soooooooo much fun... who knew we were learning, too?
What’s Coming Up . . .
Language Focus
We have been focussing on writing and learning the sounds associated with the
letters S, A, T and P. Next month, we will continue with the letters I, N, C and K .
The SK’s have been exploring the basic sight words “ I “, “am”, “a” and “like”. Next
month, we will be studying the words “see”, “at” and “in”.
At Home Reading Books: We have begun our “At Home Reading Program”. Just a
reminder that every week, we will be sending home a book at your child’s reading
level for them to practice reading at home, and another book of their choice that
you can read to/with them. The folder and book(s) will be sent home every Monday
and are expected back on the Friday (or Thursday if Friday is a PA DAY). Please
sit with your child as he/she reads the book sent home each week. It is
recommended that your child read the book more than once in order to improve
fluency.
Math Focus
In math, we have just finished exploring how to sort various items by different
attributes i.e. colour, size, shape etc. Next, our focus will be on recognizing and
developing patterns.
Just Some Reminders...
1)
Our library day is Thursday. Children are to keep their library book at
home for one week and return it the following Thursday. Just a
reminder, Ms. Romeo does not allow the children to take out a new book
unless they have returned their previous one. There is a library bin in our
classroom to store library books should you choose to send it in before
Thursday.
2)
Our gym days are every Monday. Please ensure that your child has
proper running shoes in order to participate in gym. Sending indoor shoes
that are “running shoes” is ideal.
3)
Thank you to those parents who have volunteered to make play dough for
the class. We are still looking for volunteers for May and June. If you
are able to help out by making one batch at the beginning of your
assigned month please let us know via the mail folder and we can send you
the recipe.
4)
We request that NO toys be brought from HOME to school. We cannot
be responsible for toys that are lost or damaged and it is our intention
that the students spend their learning time using the educational
materials that are purposefully set up in the classroom.
5)
St. Timothy School interviews will be held on November 13 for those
students in which we would like to discuss concerns we may have. We will
contact those parents directly. We will be meeting with all other parents
to discuss your child’s progress at the next scheduled interview time
early in the new year.
6)
Don’t forget to see the day-to-day learning that goes on in our class by
following us on Twitter at @sttimothyfdk105
Thank you for your continuing support,
Mrs. A. Iarossi and Ms. M. Quaranta
