entice you into contemplation and joy.
May you feel the energy of summer rains
penetrating thirsty gardens, golf courses,
lawns and farmlands.
May these rains remind you that your inner thirst
needs quenching; your inner self needs to be
refreshed, restored and renewed.
No one enjoys summer like children. They do
not yet work in offices. They do not own
calendars with tasks crying to be done. And so,
when school is out, look for the child who lives
inside you and rediscover the gifts of summer.
The entire staff wishes the families of St. Thomas
More Catholic School, a very safe and restful
summer, filled with many opportunities for
reflection and rejuvenation.
In honour of TD Canadian Children’s Book Week, The
Canadian Children’s Book Centre is delighted to give each
Grade 1 student in our board a Canadian children’s book,
thanks to the generous sponsorship of TD Bank Financial
Group. This year’s book is entitled Doors in the Air
written by David Weale and illustrated by Pierre Pratt.

Sacramental Celebrations
Thank you to our Parent Council for planning our
Grades 2 and 8 Sacramental celebrations to take
place on Friday, June 12th, 2015 at 1:15 p.m.!
Parents/Guardians are invited to attend the Celebration.
SACRAMENT OF CONFIRMATION
The Archdiocese of Toronto has announced that the
Sacrament of Confirmation will now be administered to students
in their Grade 7 year. Our local Pastors and parish staff have
been informed of the change. For the school year 2015-2016, a
“double cohort” of students will prepare to receive the
Sacrament of Confirmation – both the Grade 7 students, along
with the Grade 8s. Each parish will decide, based on local
circumstances, how best to handle this in the 2015-2016
school year. For some, it might mean a combined ceremony,
while for others, it will mean 2 separate ceremonies, perhaps
with one in the fall and the other in the spring. The local
parishes will communicate their plans to the principals of the
schools they serve.
Our schools will work in conjunction with the Archdiocese of
Toronto and the local parishes to ensure that our
students are prepared for the Sacrament of
Confirmation.
It is our continued hope that parish, family and school will help
our young people prepare for full initiation into the Church. With
the Gifts of the Holy Spirit bestowed upon the confirmandi, they
will be prepared to assist with leadership positions within their
school, parish and greater community during their last year/s of
elementary school and to aid in the transition to secondary
school.
VIRTUE OF THE MONTH
Catholic School Council
Many thanks to the members of our Catholic School Council 20142015, who organized a variety of events to raise funds in the
school and to support our student programs and co-curricular
activities. All of their efforts focused on enhancing programs and
opportunities for students. Money was used to purchase or support
library materials, outdoor play equipment, kindergarten materials,
Sacramental Celebrations, choir, school events, volleyball and
hockey equipment, funding busses for trips, yogurt day, arts and
crafts club, musical keyboards, digital Elmo Cameras, digital
scanner, board games and ShareLife donations.
Thank you to our School Council for your endless hours of hard
work:

Mrs. Chow-Benoit, and Mrs. Raptopoulos. We thank them for
providing a special lunch each week and relief for parents. The
time they give is greatly appreciated!
This month we celebrate the virtue of Fairness. When we
spend a lot of time immersed in a variety of different media
– TV, movie, magazine, radio, we can sometimes forget
that life is not a competition. We are made by God to live
together, to share and to help each other. You can’t be a
Christian alone. Christianity is all about living in
community – ideally, one big happy family.
A Fair Person…
Listens to all sides before forming opinions.
Shows good sportsmanship at all times.
Knows that the same rules apply to everyone.
Refuses to twist rules to avoid consequences.
Works to bring peaceful solutions to problems.
Cheers on the successes of others.
Can balance their own rights and
responsibilities with those of others.
Pizza Days
The final PIZZA DAY this year will be JUNE 23th .
Please consider becoming an active member of your Catholic
School Council. Information will be coming home in
September 2015.
APPLES! APPLES! APPLES!
This year several students in the Intermediate
division applied for and received a SpeakUp grant from the
Ministry of Education. The money from this grant was used
to start up a Student Council. The members of this
Council, along with Class Representatives from grades 18, worked diligently to gather data and find out just what
was on the minds of the students at St Thomas More!
Overwhelmingly the kids at our school indicated that they
wanted access to healthy, snacks! Apples were the fruit of
choice!!! Beginning next week, Wednesday June 17th and
Wednesday June 24th, the Student Council members and
Class Reps will be handing out free apples to any student
who wishes to enjoy one!
Health & Safety – Protecting the Skin
Please be aware of the harmful effects of the UV rays from the sun. We remind students regularly to take precautions to
protect their skin: wear a hat; wear sunblock; wear protective clothing; when possible, stay out of direct sunlight;
drink plenty of water.

school starts. A nutritious breakfast is served daily.
The After School Program runs from the end of the
school day until 6:00 p.m. Children participate in
recreational activities, are served a nutritious snack
daily and have time for homework. Registration is
currently taking place for September. Fee assistance is available.

ONLINE REPORTING TOOL
The Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School board has developed a new way to help nurture a safe, caring and inclusive school environment. The Online Reporting Tool is
intended for students in grades 3 – 8 who become aware
of bullying incidents and negative behaviours. The student
can simply ‘click’ on the link found on our school’s website
to fill out the report. The report will then be directly emailed
to the principal and/or vice principal and will be dealt with
accordingly. It is important to recognize that the Online
Reporting Tool is an alternate reporting option. It is best
practice to speak directly with a responsible adult at home
and/or in the school.
SUMMER CAMP
Once again through the Focus of Youth Grant we are
pleased to offer your students from grades 5 – 8 FREE
summer camp opportunities. This year we have three
locations: Ascension of Our Lord, St. Francis Xavier
and Cardinal Leger. The four week camp is free and
includes lunch.

CRIMINAL REFERENCE
CHECKS
A reminder that in order to volunteer
in our schools, a valid Criminal Reference
Check is MANDATORY and must be on
file in the school office; this includes
volunteering to supervise field trips. Blank application
forms are available in the main office. Please feel free to
pick one up prior to summer vacation!
MISSING TEXT AND
LIBRARY BOOKS
STUDENT PLACEMENTS
2015-2016
Each year, some books are lost or go missing. It is the
student’s Responsibility to ensure that all books are
returned to the school. Please assist your child in
locating all texts and library books in the home. In the
event that your child is unable to locate the book, you
will be notified regarding the cost to replace the book.
We appreciate your support in keeping losses to a
minimum and in teaching your child a sense of responsibility.
Within Ontario, all schools are bound by a strict
teacher:pupil ratio. This is particularly evident in the
primary grades where a hard cap of 20:1 is
compulsory. This cap as well as the fluctuating
population of St. Thomas More, means that combined
grades will continue to be a reality.
This Summer Take Four!
Did you know that by reading just FOUR books over
the summer, kids can help avoid the “summer slide,”
or the loss of academic skills that tend to occur over
the summer. Also, kids that read just 25 books a year
score in the top 2% on standardized tests. To help
make reading a reality over the summer try the following:
 Let kids choose their own books (In a recent
Scholastic survey 91% of kids were more likely to
finish a book they chose themselves);
 Read over breakfast;
 Always carry a book;
 Have a family reading time;
Set individual goals.
FAREWELLS
Until we finalize our enrolment in September all class
arrangements and teacher assignments are tentative.
Please do not call the school prior to the first day, as
placements are very tentative, and may change as
enrolment changes.
On September 8, 2015, students are to line up at
their respective grade level signs which will be
posted in the schoolyard. A roll call of each class
will take place.
LOST AND FOUND
We often find lost items at St. Thomas More School.
Items such as shoes, hats, jackets, gloves etc. are
collected and placed in the lost and found box. Please
have a look to see if any items belong to your child.
At the end of the school year, all remaining items will
be donated to charity.
MEDICATIONS AT SCHOOL
We would like to wish the following staff members
the best of luck as they move on to new school sites.
We thank them for all that they have contributed to
St. Thomas More. They will be greatly missed!
If your child requires medication to be stored at
school, please contact the office as you will be required to fill out forms for the 2015-2016 school
year.
We wish the best of luck to:
A. Rampado, J. Thibodeau,
EPI-PENS
Epi-pens that are stored in the office will go home
on the last day of school with forms to be completed for the 2015-2016 school year. Please ensure
that an epi-pen comes to school on September 8th
with your child.
GRADE 8 CLAP-OUT
Please join us as we “clap-out” our grade 8 students.
We will be meeting in the front foyer on Friday, June
26th at 2:30 p.m. to congratulate our grade 8 students
as they begin the next phase of their educational journey.
HAVE A GREAT SUMMER!!
