Open Book St. Richard On Thursday, October 16th, St. Richard teachers and School Council members joined forces to launch the first of 3 literacy based theme nights. After a brief introduction and presentation by Mrs. Mountjoy, parents visited various classes hosted by teachers. During these breakout sessions, parents learned some of the different reading strategies adapted to improve reading comprehension. Literacy Loot Bags were distributed to all participants as a bonus for attending. The 2nd session was held on November 4 with the theme of comic books framing the evening. The last session will take place on November 19, and centers around fairy tales. Special Thanks to Mrs. Torrao and Mrs. Mountjoy for organizing the activities and to all the teachers volunteering their evenings in support. 1 Bullying Prevention November’s Key Theme: Everyone Needs to Learn How to Live in Peace In November students will focus on the message of peace. Peace is defined as inner contentment, serenity and harmonious relations. Students will create a unique ‘peace place’ in each of their classrooms. The ‘peace place’ is an area identified and decorated by students that they can use to take a moment for personal reflection or to resolve conflict with another student. This idea of having a ‘calming’ space is used in schools, workplaces and family homes. Tips for Parents: help your child learn to recognize early signs that they are becoming agitated or upset create a calming space or reflection area in your home learn the steps of the conflict resolution model the school uses and apply those at home Cross Country It was another successful year running cross country at St.Richard School. Dress Appropriately for the Weather Now that colder weather is upon us, we respectfully remind you to ensure that your children come to school dressed warmly to participate in recess activities. When weather conditions are severe, we may reduce the outdoor playtime, or have indoor recess entirely. Fresh air and exercise are vital components for successful learning, so we will endeavor to have children play outside whenever possible. Help your children come to school appropriately dressed with warm coats, scarves, hats and mittens on those really chilly days! For health and safety reasons and to help keep the school clean, we ask all students to have indoor shoes. For students in grades 1 to 3, a spare set of socks and pants in their knapsacks is advisable. This would avoid unnecessary phone calls to parents requesting a change of clothing be brought to school when and if children are wet. Thank you for your support.
