St. Paul Secondary School’s Principal’s Message

St. Paul Secondary School’s
Principal’s Message
Let me begin by wishing everyone a
Happy Jubilee Year of St. Paul, our
patron saint, and inspiration for all
we do here at our school. The fall
semester is now behind us and we are
in preparation mode for a very busy
second semester at the school.
Parents and staff had a wonderful
reason to celebrate the Jubilee Year
of St. Paul at the Oasis Banquet Hall
on Friday, January 30. Applause and
thanks to our school council cochairs and organizers, Ms. Cormier
and Ms. Catani as well as the staff
committee for turning out such a fun
group of parents and staff to celebrate
all of the blessings that we share in
our community.
Once again, St. Paul students and
staff demonstrated all of their genuine gifts to a packed cafetorium at our
Talent Night at the end of November.
The acts that graced our stage were
as diverse and creative as ever. A big
applause goes out to Mr. Brugmans,
Ms. Laxton, Ms.Tobin, Mr. Penkul,
and all of the staff who participated
in the auditioning and performance
segments of the program.
At the end of September our full
colour yearbook arrived and was distributed to last year’s students. The
St. Paul yearbook course students,
under the capable direction of Mr.
Phillips were awarded a second place
finish in the National Year Book
competitions. This year’s class is
examining all of the constructive suggestions in order to produce an even
finer product next year.
The St. Paul Open House for Grade 8
students on January 8 was extremely
well attended by parents and students
from our feeder schools, with many

parents sharing their fascination and excitement with the diversified program offerings
that were highlighted that evening. Parents
were informed of the upgrades that have
been made to our Drama room, our new
Specialist High Skill Major Diplomas and
our commitment to the Ecosource environmental priorities.
Grade Nine Mathematics students who
wrote the EQAO tests on January 15 and
16th were assisted in preparation by the
Mathematics Department through a series of
after school workshops designed to acquaint
students with the kinds of problems they
could expect. Similarly, those Grade 10
students who will be writing the Provincial
Literacy Test (OSSLT) on April 2 can avail
themselves of extra help through Ms. Sudac
by picking up a form by January 26 in the
Main Office, or consulting the school website for details.
Sales are brisk for our February 20 Semi
Formal Dance at the Versailles Banquet
Hall. All students have been encouraged to
share with parents their whereabouts both
before and after the event. The theme for the
evening is the “Sultan’s Tent” and it prom-
ises to be a fantastic evening.
We have been receiving many compliments
on the relevance and usability of the information that is posted on our school website.
I would encourage all parents and students
to bookmark www.stpaulss.org, especially
the Guidance, Learning Center, and St. Paul
TV sections of the site, where parents can
watch our morning reflections and announcements from YouTube and for updates
of school information.
Two New Year’s wishes that I would like to
reinforce from my perspective are reminders that the school start time of 8:20 am is
not a suggested time, but one that we have
been enforcing with more regularity and
consequences. For parent commuters, I
would ask that you leave earlier to reinforce
the importance of punctuality. Secondly,
please discourage your son or daughter from
bringing a cell phone to school as they are
in violation of Board and school policy and
school etiquette. There is phone availability
at the Attendance office all day.
Best wishes for a successful semester to all
of our St. Paul students.
Chaplain’s Corner
Student Council
The first Semester is over. We are bravely entering the second half of the school year.
Semester One has been a busy one
for the St. Paul Student Council.
I am so proud to be a part of the St. Paul School Community. I have never seen a school as
caring and generous. I was particularly impressed with the generosity of the school prior to
Christmas. Ms. Vono, Ms. McMahon and the members of ACT Now collected over $2,500
that was used to help assist eighteen families during the Christmas season. Students, Teachers
and Parents were so generous providing items for the annual Christmas Raffle. When I delivered the Christmas Hampers I could see the appreciation in the eyes of those we assisted.
I really want to convey to everyone who contributed to the success of the Christmas Hamper
program the gratitude and love that I experienced completing the good work started by you.
I would also like to thank Ms.Monticciolo and her Cosmetology students for their outstanding work prior to the Christmas Holidays. Ms. Monticciolo and her students donated all
of the proceeds from their “Cosmo” work to Dr. Andrew Simone and Canadian Food for
Children. They also held a bake sale and raffle. They collected over $1,500 for CFFC. Ms.
Monticciolo and her girls were seen at the school several nights after 6:00 p.m. in the weeks
before Christmas styling hair for Staff and Parents.
We are all well aware that the Catholic Church has been celebrating the Year of St. Paul. The
St. Paul School Community, Parents and Staff, have been busy planning events through out
the year to celebrate the life and message of our Patron Saint, Paul. On January 30, 2009 we
celebrated St. Paul’s life with a dinner dance at the Oasis Banquet Hall. The purpose of the
Dinner Dance was to have a community get-together and have some fun. A special thank
you to all of the Parents and Teachers involved. The dinner dance also allowed us to generate some funds to allow for a student celebration at the end of the year. A group of staff have
been busy planning a culminating year end event. I have some details to share with you. On
Thursday, June 11, 2009, the school will gather at St. Dominic Church to celebrate Mass.
At the conclusion of Mass we will process as a school community from the Church to the
School with the Icon of St. Paul to the site of our newly constructed Marian Grotto. The
Grotto will be Dedicated and Blessed by Fr.
Noel Whalen, Pastor St. Dominic Church. At
the conclusion of the Blessing, there will be
an outdoor Peace Concert and Barbecue, complete with an 815 slice birthday cake for St.
Paul. All members of the St. Paul Community
are welcome to attend. Ms. Multari will just
bake a bigger birthday cake to feed all of the
people who want to attend!
I would also like to announce that students
from St. Paul School have been hosting
a monthly radio program on Radio Maria
Canada. The program is broadcast live from
the Radio Maria studios and airs on the last
Tuesday of every month. It starts at 8:30 p.m.
and begins with the praying of the Rosary. At
9:00 p.m. the student panel discusses youth
issues and current events. Listeners can call
in and often the dialogue is spirited to say the
least. Music is provided by Michel Filion,
Dylan Prior and Manny Rodriquez. Megan
Medeiros and Danielle Nocera are the hosts
of the program. Previous shows have been
archived and are available for listening/podcasting. Visit www.HMWN.Com for more
information.
The school year started off by welcoming new and returning students
with our annual Welcome Back BBQ.
This was quickly followed by our
first fundraising effort of selling SPC
cards. Some of the proceeds from
these sales are put towards the running of student council events.
This year’s fall dance, held at the
end of October, was a great success.
Students danced the night away, with
some winning great prizes. Through
lunch time activities, from scavenger
hunts to Fear Factor eating contests,
students have had the opportunity to
get involved in fun ways.
The Christmas Spirit Week brought
more activities, including door decorating. The winning class was Mr.
Connolley’s PIP class. His students
created a fabulously decorated door!
Upcoming events include our annual
semi-formal in February and Carnival Day in late May. We
are also looking into sponsoring a child through the
organization Chalice. More
information about this will be
coming soon.
Ms. Caldarelli, Mr. Isabella and Ms. Mahendran,
would like to thank all of the
student council members for
their commitment and hard
work:
Kirk Pineda, Anthony
Dimech, Jenna Blakely, Aneta Wocjik, Nicole Dalli, Luis
Hernandez, Larissa Rodo,
Nicole Danesi, Carmine
Leggieri, Dylan Prior, David

M & M’s
The St. Paul Music & Ministry team
kept busy by preparing for the school
Advent Mass which was held on December 18, at St. Dominic’s Church.
What a beautiful way to continue our
preparation for the Christmas season,
and welcome the true message of
Jesus into the holidays!
The school would like to recognize the dedication of our M&M’s:
Corissa Andrade, Kate Goosens,
Jessica Peng, Lucie Toman, Monique Morgan, Brianne Awrey, Laura
Krajewski, Victoria Stawiarz, Manny
Rodriguez, Pauline Priadka, Dylan
Prior, Tati Stolf, Sarah Forma, Mitch
Filion, Cynthia Odunlami, Matthew
Bischof, David Patch, Brianna Dornford, Jessica Kumah, Joshua Arantes,
and Kaitlyn Vetro. Thank you for
your commitment and enthusiasm!
As always, new members are welcome when we meet again in March
to prepare for Holy Thursday Mass,
and begin planning for the end of
year events!
Student Vote
The speedy calling of the federal
election in the fall, brought with it
the opportunity for St. Paul to once
again participate in the Canada-wide
Student Vote program. Students
across the country were able to vote
for the same candidates in their
ridings, however, at a school level.
They were able to discover if their
selections matched the community’s
true results. This is a great experience
for all students, whether of voting
age or not; a hands-on experience to
see how the system really works. Student Vote and St. Paul’s encourages
everyone to make your voice heard
by voting in all elections. Knowledge
is Power!

May your New Year
be filled with health
and happiness and
may your resolutions to
begin your fitness program
be realized this year.
The cold, snowy and wintry
weather has not stopped our St. Paul athletes
from trekking in for 6:30 am girls volleyball
and boys basketball practices. Mr. O’Reilly
and Mr. Derry hope to bring rugby to St.
Paul next year. Both coaches will attend a
special conference for rugby coaching which
will be held in Kingston next month. Girls
hockey inaugural season was a success.
Thanks to Mr. Derry and Mr. Connelly for
coaching the girls.

Talent Night ‘08!
On Friday, November 28, St. Paul put on another amazing show
and, for a fourth straight year, a sold out crowd enjoyed live
music, dancing and videos. The audience of more than 400 enthusiastic students, family members and friends were treated to a
remarkable show of more than 28 song, dance and band numbers.
After 2 months of planning, taping and rehearsing, the cast and
crew showcased another night of first-rate entertainment.
All of the hard work was brought together under the direction of
Mr. Brugmans, Ms. Laxton, Ms. Tobin and Mr. Penkul. The show
was strung together by our capable MC’s: Desmond Curtis, Greg
Leclair, Kasia Okragly and Samantha Lombardi.
The 8 pre-taped video clips - a collection of movie, tv & ad parodies plus
some original sketches - were shot
and edited by Sherryne Dos Santos,
Alex Hajduk, Matthew Mansueto,
Christian Pereira, Roman Martuscelli and Kevin Sanabria and added
a wonderfully hilarious break from
the stage performances. Video, sound
and stage crews worked hard to give
the audience a professional show.
Door prizes were plentiful this year
and we’d like to thank our friends
at LA Music, the Universal Music
Group and Apple Canada for their
donations of some amazing prizes
consisting of CD’s, DVD’s, t-shirts,
hats, mugs, sweat bands, harmonicas, duffel bags, Dolby surround
sound speakers and an iPod. Capping off our list as the grand door
prize, was an Epiphone SG electric
guitar and case, won by Dominic
Rubino, a Grade 10 student here at St. Paul.
After 3.5 hours of non-stop entertainment, the
night came to an end with cheers from a very energetic audience. We would like to thank the cast
and crew for their work in making Talent Night
2008 such a success.

ACT NOW
Happy New Year! Welcome to a new semester! Once
again, St Paul staff and students shared their talents,
academic excellence, technological prowess and
generosity as we presented our school to Grade 8
parents and students on January 8. The evening’s
presentation began with blessings from Mr. Finamore,
a live rendition of our national anthem by Mr. Penkul
and music students, a DVD presentation designed by
the students in Mr. Brugmans’ SHSM courses followed by
curriculum information from Mr. Schmidt, Mr. Attanasio and Ms. McHenry. Parents
appreciated the classroom demonstrations by Mr. Alp, Ms. George, Mrs.Hastings, Mr.
Guilherme, Mrs. Petrauskas, Ms. Monticciolo, Ms.Schlarp, Mr. Brugmans, Mr. Attanasio, Mr. Bodnarchuk, Ms. Tobin, Mrs. McMahon, Mr. Fernandes, Mr. Mondelli,
Mr. Grenier, and Ms Wasiuk. Many students worked with their teachers and others
helped parents “tour’ our campus. Thanks to B. Dornford, N. Burke, N. Kolenda,
S. Delaney, O.Gerolini, J. Perrotta, E.Sestanj, N.Dalli, E. De Luca, B. Kramer, A.
Ferkul, B.Awrey, J. DeMelo and S. Leonardo for their help in making this evening so
successful.
The ACT NOW group is committed to living the Gospel of Jesus through actions of
charity and working towards justice. We
were able to help Dr. Simone’s warehouse
at Thanksgiving with a very successful
school food drive. This Christmas we took
on a number of actions to help those in need
in our school and parish community. The
committee participated in the St. Dominic’s
Christmas Bazaar in November, led by a
very enthusiastic and capable Ms.Vono.
Thanks to all the parents and students that
contributed baked goods and their time in
order to make this event successful.
Guidance counselors presented Grade 9 Registration information and helpful booklets
to our elementary schools during the week of January 12-16.
Please note these dates in your St. Paul agenda.
February 2-13
Changes to student schedules where possible. Please note there
were waiting lists for some courses so many students were encouraged to take a Night School course if available.
February 9-16 Sign-up for graduation photos.

Throughout the semester, many of our students attend valuable workshops off campus. In November, Emily De Luca and Kaitlyn Vetro attended a Kid’s Help Phone
presentation. This semester they will present to St. Edmund Elementary School and
also to our own St. Paul students. Congratulations ladies! You demonstrate our school
motto “Everything with Heart”.
ACT NOW students then led the Christmas
Drive and organized the annual Christmas
raffle. We were able to raise close to $3000
for the needy and this was due to the generosity and kindness of not only the students
of ACT NOW, but also through the support
of the St. Paul community; parents and
teachers. On behalf of Ms. Hastings, Ms.
Vono and Mr. Guilherme, we would like to
take this opportunity to thank all the students
and parents who give so willingly to make
this, a school community that truly lives its
Faith. Christianity teaches us to take the
message of Jesus to heart: “Whatever you
do for the least of my brothers and sisters,
you do for me” and Catholic Education is
why we choose to live this message here at
St. Paul.
One Life To Live
Last October, five students represented St.
Paul at the One Life to Live-Make the Right
Choices for You Conference at the Living
Arts Centre. The conference was sponsored
by the Region of Peel. Students attended
from high schools all over the Peel region.
The morning started with keynote speaker
Keith Hawkins who was not only motivational and inspiring but also had a great
sense of humour.
Later students had the opportunity to
participate in workshops on a variety of
topics which included, Stress Management,
Violence Prevention, Youth Leadership and
Healthy Relationships.
The event was well attended and based on
feedback from St. Paul’s students, a very
informative day.
The Drama Showcase January 2009
EcoSource
Did you know that exams don’t have to be the traditional paper and pen demonstration of skills? That exams can involve imagination and display skill, knowledge and
expertise? That’s what the Drama Showcase is all about! Drama students worked from early
November casting plays, fulfilling production duties (to direct, stage manage, design sets,
costumes, makeup, programs, tickets, front of house displays and ads), practicing roles and
creating sound and light cues. Some nine plays were the result of their labour of love. Their
work was showcased in our daytime presentations and in the evening for our Senior Drama
Showcase hosted on Friday, January 16 and our Grade Ten Drama Showcase presented on
Monday January 19. Seventy proud parents, teachers and friends attended each of these evening functions and marveled at the degree of expertise and commitment shown by our drama
stars. Our thanks to teachers Mr. Guilherme and Mrs. McMahon who produced their respective shows to not only assess the students but to create memorable memories that will last
far longer than a mere exam. Thanks to the administration for providing us a new light board
and curtains, to the parents and classes who were our valued audiences and especially to the
students themselves. They did themselves proud! Congratulations to the following shows and
students listed below.
This is a great year for St. Paul Secondary. We have had the honour of
being selected as a Green School by
the organization of EcoSource. With
their help, we have run a waste audit
showing just how much garbage St.
Paul creates and how much our recycling program needs to be improved.
Grade Ten Drama Showcase: Mr. Guilherme’s class
Sherwood Forest is a Robin Hood fantasy and features Daphne and Eliza is a drama with a
surprise ending. It includes Feathertop, a new Fairy Tale for Drama and stars.
Ms. McMahon Grade Ten Drama

Football Romeo is a high school story about a nerdy romance. Its cast includes Patrick Latvinskas, Valerie Michel, Nick Povse and Alysa Santarossa.
Showdown at Sand Valley is a favourite western comedy showcasing Shawntee Bennett, Joseph Frederico, Agnes Kawalec, Kim Lee, Nat Macko, Thomas Mularksi, Kristina Pantarotto
and Kaytlin Fatovic.
Ms. McMahon’s Senior Drama
Lord What Fools: This take-off of a Midsummer Night’s Dream features Andreia Henriques,
Cathy Zajac, Matthew Bestvater Tennison, Vanessa Rail and Chantel DeSousa.
Nobody Sleeps is a comedy about what happens when a robber is bullied by his victims,
featuring Jeremy Kozelj, Samantha Lombardi, Alexandra Dziama, Ishanna Rampersadsingh
and Erin Valenzuela
A Marriage Proposal is Chekhov’s classic comedy about marriage starring Adam Dekundy,
Joanna Lewandowska and Joelle Skaf
Over the course of this school year,
EcoSource is assisting us in improving our waste audit results. They are
a great help in informing the student
body and community of proper waste
management techniques; running
workshops and assisting us in our
attempt to lower our ecological
and carbon footprints. Through this
relationship, St. Paul hopes that over
the next few years, we will be able
to create a green roof and build a
greenhouse on the school property.
We have been awarded a $1500 grant
to build a composter for use with our
cafeteria food waste.
Also, with EcoSource, St. Paul has
been honoured by being accepted
to present at the 5th World Environmental Education Congress in
Montreal this May. Ms. Caldarelli
will represent St. Paul and DufferinPeel, showing the world how we are
moving toward true sustainability
and how we are a model for other
schools.
Congratulations St. Paul! Keep
Thinking Green!
We look forward to next semester when Drama students will create similar Showcases, the
focus piece for Holy Thursday’s April 9 assembly and a special project to commemorate St.
Paul in our June Liturgy.
Clearly, our Drama graduates are gifted with far different skills than can be provided by other
courses and we urge students to consider the opportunities afforded by taking this special
subject in the future.
