You will then present your topic to the class using a PowerPoint presentation and also be responsible for producing a two-page handout summarizing the key concepts of your topic. Network Topologies for LANs (how networks are designed) - definition of topology, hub and router - description of the Bus, Star, Ring and Mesh (or Hybrid) topology - factors determining type of topology to be used - advantages and disadvantages for each topology structure 2. Network Hardware (the physical devices required for a network) - definition and description of servers (including memory, storage capacity and speed) - definition and description of printers, print-servers, Network Interface Card (NIC), hubs, switching devices, bridges, routers, brouters, modems and gateways 3. Transmission Media (how information is physically transferred on networks) - definition of media, transmission media, bandwidth - types of transmission media including cable (coaxial, twisted-pair, fiber-optic) and wireless (infrared, radio waves, microwave and satellite systems) - advantages/disadvantages to each media type with regards to cost, installation and interference 4. Network Architecture (how information travels through the physical network structure) - definition of Network Architecture - description of architecture considerations including information transfer, network size and cost - description of Ethernet, Token-Ring, and ARCnet 5. Network Operating Systems (software used to control the overall activity of a network) - definition of network operating systems and network administrator - brief description of peer-to-peer OS including Windows 95, Win 98 and Win Me - description of client/server OS including NetWare, Windows NT, Win 2000, Unix and Linux - discuss advantages/disadvantages for each client/server Operating System 6. Network Certifications (certification requirements to work in the computer network industry) - discuss the importance of being certified as a network professional - outline the following certification programs including Novell, Microsoft (MCSE), and Oracle including focus of study, and exam requirements - discuss job opportunities/descriptions in the Computer Networking field Assignment Instructions 1.
