Student Success Center University of South Carolina National Student Exchange Go from cold to hot, mountains to beach, and everything in between! The National Student Exchange (NSE) provides opportunities for students to study for a semester or a year at another NSE in the United States, its territories, and Canada. With nearly 200 universities from which to choose, students should be able to find a campus with just the right combination of courses, facilities, and environment to meet their personal and academic needs and interests. Students participate in NSE in order to: • Explore new cultures • Broaden perspectives • Explore new areas of study • Access new courses • Break out of their comfort zones • Meet new people • Live in a different area • Investigate graduate schools • Seek future employment • Internship opportunities Each year, more than 3,000 students participate in NSE. They continue to make progress toward home campus degree programs while studying in new places, and exploring a different part of North America. Eligibility Exchange participation is a privilege, not a right. Listed below are the minimum requirements for NSE participation. • Full-time enrollment • Cumulative 2.75 GPA • Good standing (academic, judicial, and financial) • Permission from major There may be additional requirements and/or restrictions on exchange participation. Students can learn of these from the Student Success Center. www.nse.org The University of South Carolina is an equal opportunity institution. Length of Exchange Placement Students may participate in NSE for a single term or a full academic year. Some campuses can accommodate summer exchange. The maximum cumulative total for exchange participation may not exceed one calendar year. Most placements are made through the negotiation of home and host coordinators at NSE’s annual conference in early March. Annually, 97% of the applicants are placed at one of their campus choices. Placement probabilities are governed by the number of openings at an institution and the number of students seeking that location. Application Process Apply for exchange through the Student Success Center. The process includes a résumé, a transcript, recommendations, statement of goals, biographical data, and a personal interview. There is a $250 nonrefundable application fee. Priority application deadline for fall, spring, or summer 2016-2017 is February 1st, 2016. Financial Aid More often than not, all financial aid and scholarships a student is currently receiving from USC can apply to NSE. Ask the Financial Aid Office for further information. Cost There are two tuition payment plans utilized by NSE: Plan A & Plan B. the state of South Carolina only allows for Plan B Exchanges. Under Plan B, students pay their normal tuition/fees to their home university. On both tuition payment plans, fees assessed as a condition of enrollment (e.g., fees for laboratory courses, general service, computer, technology, art and photography supplies) are always paid to your host campus. Room and meals are always paid to host campus. Students will also be responsible for transportation, personal expenses, and sightseeing opportunities while on exchange.
