Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, the King of creation!
O my soul, praise him, for he is your health and salvation!
Come, all who hear; brothers and sisters, draw near, join me in glad adoration!
Praise to the Lord, who o’er all things is wondrously reigning, sheltering you under his wings, oh, so gently sustaining.
Have you not seen all that is needful has been sent by his gracious ordaining?
Praise to the Lord, who will prosper your work and defend you; surely his goodness and mercy shall daily attend you.
Ponder anew what the Almighty can do as with his love he befriends you.
Praise to the Lord! O let all that is in me adore him!
All that has life and breath, come now with praises before him!
Let the amen sound from his people again.
Gladly forever adore him!

This is my Father’s world, and to my listening ears all nature sings and round me rings the music of the spheres.
This is my Father’s world; I rest me in the thought of rocks and trees, of skies and seas
– his hand the wonders wrought.
This is our Father’s world: O let us not forget that though the wrong is great and strong, God is the ruler yet.
He trusts us with his world, to keep it clean and fair— all earth and trees, all skies and seas, all creatures everywhere.
This is my Father’s world: he shines in all that’s fair; in rustling grass I hear him pass—he speaks to me everywhere.
This is my Father’s world: why should my heart be sad?
The Lord is King, let heaven ring! God reigns; let earth be glad.

George W. Bush, President of the United States of America
George W. Bush is the 43rd president of the United
States. He was sworn into offi ce on January 20, 2001, reelected on November 2, 2004, and sworn in for a second term on January 20, 2005. Prior to his presidency, President Bush served for six years as the 46th governor of the state of Texas.
President Bush was born on July 6, 1946, in New
Haven, Connecticut, and grew up in Midland and Houston,
Texas. He received a bachelor’s degree in history from Yale
University in 1968 and then served as an F-102 fi ghter pilot in the Texas Air National Guard. President Bush received a Master of Business Administration degree from Harvard
Business School in 1975. Following graduation, he moved back to Midland and began a career in the energy business.
After working on his father’s successful 1988 presidential campaign, he assembled the group of partners who purchased the Texas Rangers baseball franchise in 1989.
On November 8, 1994, President Bush was elected governor of Texas, and he was re-elected on November 3, 1998.
Since becoming President of the United States in 2001,
President Bush has worked with the Congress to develop a variety of important initiatives, including tax relief and a comprehensive education reform, the No Child Left Behind
Act of 2001. President Bush has also worked to improve healthcare and modernize Medicare, providing a prescription drug benefi t for seniors; to increase homeownership, especially among minorities; to manage the environment; and to increase military effectiveness. He has also supported programs that encourage citizens to help their neighbors in need.
Since the morning of September 11, 2001, President
Bush has taken unprecedented steps to combat terrorism at home and abroad. He is particularly grateful for the service and sacrifi ce of our brave men and women in uniform and their families.
President Bush is married to Laura Welch Bush, a former teacher and librarian, and they have twin daughters,
Barbara and Jenna. The Bush family also includes two dogs,
Barney and Miss Beazley, and a cat, Willie.
Greetings from the Calvin College Class of 1955 and congratulations to each new graduate as you receive your degree from Calvin College.
Fifty years ago, 223 senior students were featured in a photograph taken under the stately pillars of the Administration Building on the old Franklin Street Calvin Campus.
We came together to celebrate our Calvin experience.
We paused to refl ect on our spiritual maturity nourished by disciplined study, faithful and committed faculty, and loving family and friends.
Calvin today is considerably different from the institution we attended. The relocated campus is beautiful; modern buildings grace the landscape; curricular offerings are varied and impressive. Calvin has established academic chairs for deserving faculty and institutes to enrich the college’s intellectual community and extend its scholarly reach. Increased international student participation has enriched campus life and activity. Gender parity in athletics is evident by national attention and recognition for both men’s and women’s teams.
Yet some things have not changed at all. Calvin continues to value and teach the integration of intellect and faith.
Calvin’s nationally recognized faculty continues to share its scholarly and creative gifts with the students. We trust that you have seized their vision to be motivated to use your talents and gifts to further God’s transformational work in the world. We encourage you to pursue all that has made your education at Calvin a stronghold of careful, faith-fi lled thought and action.
Pick the golden moments, the precious experiences and incidents that made Calvin meaningful. Then take a moment to thank those who have made a difference in your life. Thank God for allowing you to be an infl uence on others. Pray diligently daily. Lash yourself to the Bible.
Continue to be inspired by the resurrection power of
Christ. His victory will make your life journey splendid.
Measure your days, that each may be lived in the perfect understanding that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. His grace and love will be suffi cient for all your needs, giving your future abiding signifi cance.
Your Calvin degree is a priceless treasure. Cherish it.
You join thousands of Calvin Alumni around the globe.
God grant that in our journey of life we use our gifts to be the salt and light into the small corners of the world to which we are called.
Finally, with a life sharpened by faith and practice, convey our thoughts to another gathering of graduates when you stand in our place in 2055.
Roger B. Boerema, for the Class of 1955
The Calvin Alumni Association is proud to present three alumni with the Distinguished Alumni Award. Persons honored in such a way have been chosen by an independent selection committee comprised of alumni, faculty, and staff and are endorsed by the Calvin Alumni Association Board.

Edwin J. Bos, B.S.L.M.T., Class of 1968, and
Carol J. Younkers Bos, B.S.L.M.T., Class of 1968
Ed ’68 and Carol Yonkers Bos ’68 and their staff spend much of their time traveling to exotic-sounding locales— such as Afghanistan, Armenia, and Zimbabwe—to do very, very practical work. Ed and Carol supply the laboratories of mission hospitals and clinics in emerging countries with equipment, supplies, training, and methodology consulting.
“People think of what we do as travel. But that’s only ten percent of what we do,” Ed said.
“It’s not glitzy, believe me,” added Carol. “We’re really committed to being there to walk alongside the mission hospitals, no matter what they need—whether it’s new equipment and training or repair of old equipment or the supplies that they constantly need.”
In 2004, Worldwide Lab Improvement (WWLAB), a nonprofi t ministry founded by Ed and Carol, assisted 153 missions in fi fty-nine countries. And WWLAB has aided nearly 300 missions in eighty-eight countries since 1995.
That’s the year Ed quit his job as a medical technologist at Bronson Medical Center in Kalamazoo, Michigan, where he had worked for twenty-fi ve years as a laboratory manager. During those years, Ed and Carol, who is also trained as a medical technologist, had joined missions groups in short trips to emerging countries and saw in the hospitals and clinics of those places the obvious shortage of lab equipment and staff trained to do crucial medical tests.
“I saw the same problem every place I went. They did maybe thirty to thirty-fi ve tests,” Ed said. “They had nobody to get stuff for them and nobody to train them or deliver any new equipment. And physicians in these mission hospitals were doing without simple, simple lab tests.”
The couple had been waiting for God’s direction for many years, and Carol was challenged at a conference to pray specifi cally. “In 1994, she started to pray that I would start to do this before I died. It was always something that
I was going to do. And then she got convicted that she would do it too,” Ed said.
And for ten years, the couple has brought a world of medical technology — enabling missionary physicians to diagnose such things as hepatitis, HIV, diabetes, and malaria — to a world that is still developing. Occasionally this means that WWLAB representatives must fl y into miniscule airports in single-engine planes. (In one remote village in the Congo, which had received no visitors since
1991, the residents had to cut down the grass and trees that had grown on and alongside the airstrip to allow Ed’s plane to land.) Carol usually — though not always — coordinates staff operations in the Kalamazoo facility, ordering supplies, tracking equipment, developing projects, and answering questions from the fi eld.
“It’s not measurable,” Ed says of Carol’s contribution to the ministry. “She understands what we do, so there’s never a confl ict with my time away. I fall down at her feet and call her blessed.”
Over the years, WWLAB has grown to its present staff of eleven, four of them medical technologists and all of them either volunteers or missionaries who raise their own support. The professional staff has more than ninety years of collective experience in laboratory administration, mission fi eld service, and research. God has assembled a staff with varied backgrounds, such as business, pharmacology, government relations, and equipment repair — even volunteers who come each week to clean the facility.
“Theirs is a life of faith,” said Calvin biology professor
Dr. David DeHeer in his nomination of Ed and Carol Bos for the Calvin College Distinguished Alumni Award: “Will
they receive the equipment they need? Will they receive the funds to restore, service, and ship the equipment? How can scores of boxes be shipped to a distant rural location?
Can Ed or someone from Worldwide Lab safely get to the distant location? Will they remain healthy, especially working in areas of the world where almost every communicable disease known to man exists? Will foreign governments support their work? The list goes on and on.”
“I trust God more,” says Ed about the effect of his mission work on his life. “In the Bible it talks about great faith
— people with great faith. That was always vague to me. I believe now that as you trust God in bigger areas of your life, he grows more real to you.”
And Carol talked about the rewards of the work: “A doctor we talked to in Papua, New Guinea, said, ‘We pray for you guys all the time.’ I was so moved. I said, ‘You do?’
And he said, ‘Yes, if you are broken, I am broken. And if I am broken, people die.’ That provided the motivation to keep going.”
While they enjoy spending time with their two sons,
Steven and Jeffrey, and ten grandchildren, the couple has no plans for a conventional retirement. “There’s no retirement in the Bible,” Ed maintains.
“They are strong Christians and stellar examples of alumni who have seen a need, dedicated their lives to meeting that need, and, in so doing, are God’s agents of grace and renewal throughout the world,” DeHeer said.
Richard J. Katte, M.A., Class of 1958
As basketball coach at Denver Christian High School,
Dick Katte ‘58 won his fi rst state championship more than three decades ago. Since then he has added fi ve more titles to his record, not to mention numerous other state title runs and Metro Denver League championships. Yet one of
Katte’s most memorable moments occurred off the court just a few years ago when one of his state championship teams held a reunion.
“Every player from that 1978 team came back, and they all testifi ed as to how basketball had played a signifi cant part in their lives, in their being able to deal with situations and hardships,” said Katte. “That was one of the most special times in my life. You see, coaching and teaching and mentoring kids is not like painting a house, where you can step back and say, ‘Man, that looks nice.’ It takes a while to see the impact.”
But that impact is evident among the forty-six years’ worth of Denver Christian graduates whose lives Katte has touched.
“Dick Katte has been a part of my life since about fourth grade, when I fi rst encountered him at Katte’s Kamp, his summer basketball clinic for elementary- and middleschool-aged boys,” explained Josh Vriesman, a Calvin College senior, in a letter of recommendation for Katte.
“At that time the gym was fi lled with blue conference championship and state championship banners. He talked about the many great experiences he had had over the years but then stopped abruptly and said, ‘These accomplishments don’t mean anything. The only banner in this entire gym that has any signifi cance is the one right above me.’ Hanging directly over the middle of the court was a white banner that read ‘To God Be the Glory.’”
That message is one that Katte has spread across Colorado and beyond, through his numerous award acceptance speeches and his interaction with the media.
The winningest coach in Colorado history, with a career record of 748-183, Katte was recently inducted into both the National High School Hall of Fame and the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame. In 1999, the Denver Christian gymnasium was named in his honor.
“I was deeply humbled about being selected for those honors,” said Katte. “I always try, though, to take the opportunity to talk about the qualities that I strive to teach my players — things like respect, discipline, relationships, faith — things that mean a lot more than basketball.”
In fact, one of the things Katte tells his players all the time is that he is more concerned about life after basketball than he is about basketball as life.
“I feel very strongly that as coaches it is our responsibility to serve as models and mentors for students, who are at very impressionable ages,” he said. “I feel like I am making an impact that way. That’s probably why I continue to stay in it.”
Katte has also been recognized for his efforts in this regard; he was named the fi rst Dave Sanders Award recipient in 2000. This award is given in honor of the teacher-coach killed in the Columbine High School tragedy of 1999.
“Receiving that award was a real honor because it embodies Sanders’ qualities of commitment, integrity, and courage, qualities I really like to emphasize,” he said.
The legendary coach began his career at Denver Christian in 1960, after completing his master’s degree in education at Indiana University. Originally from Sheboygan,
Wisconsin, he moved to Denver with his wife, Lorraine
Stap Katte ’58, to take a teaching position in math.
A baseball player while at Calvin, Katte began his
Denver Christian coaching career in that sport. His career also includes stints as the school’s football and track coach, athletic director, and assistant principal (a position he still holds today).
His four children all graduated from Denver Christian.
His son, Keith, played on the undefeated 1978 Crusader team. Katte continues in the classroom, teaching two math classes.
In fact, despite all of the coaching accolades, Katte considers himself fi rst and foremost a teacher. “Dick Katte is a master teacher, and it is his math classroom in which he takes most pride,” said Denver Christian principal Mark
Swalley. “Denver Christian students know well Mr. Katte’s equal enthusiasm for a basketball game and a math lesson.”
On the court and off, it is all about teaching for Katte.
Disappointing losses, calls that don’t go your way, incredible victories — all present “teachable moments.” And in forty-six years in the classroom and in the gym, Katte and his students have experienced many of those moments.
In his life, he tries to live out his motto: Bloom where you are planted.
“My original plan was to take the job, stay for maybe fi ve years and then move back to the Midwest,” he said. “I never thought I would stay in one place for this long of a time, but being able to minister to young people in Denver and to see the faithfulness of God has been very fulfi lling.”
Katte’s life has not been without some physical trials and infi rmities. In 1984 he suffered a life-threatening brain aneurysm. In 1993 he had a malignant tumor of the small intestine removed and underwent weekly chemotherapy for a full year. He has recovered fully both times and testifi es openly that “God is good.”
Winning a state championship with his most recent basketball team prompted reporters to ask Katte about his retirement plans. “Many of them said, ‘Boy this is a good way to go out — on top.’” Katte, who is 68, said, “Right now I’m committed to coming back for another year. I still have the energy, and I still think I can help young people.
Besides, I’m not really good at anything else.”

Throughout history, colorful banners have been used to mark important religious and civic events and to celebrate the vision and spirit of the participants in such events. The departmental banners displayed at this occasion arise from an awareness of this tradition and are meant to continue it. Besides symbolically revealing the richness of the various disciplines at Calvin College, the banners graphically represent their distinctiveness. Although their colors are mostly in keeping with traditional associations—scarlet for religion and theology, blue for education, orange for engineering—their forms combine the traditional, the contemporary, and the abstract.

Art Department
An abstract eye and hand symbolize artistic expression through the artist’s sense of sight and touch. Bright colors against black suggest creative boldness.
Biology Department
Dominating the Biology banner is a symbol representing the structure of the DNA molecule, deoxyribonucleic acid. The structure of this fundamental material of life, the chemical basis of heredity, was revealed in 1953 and actually photographed in 1969.
Chemistry and Biochemistry Department
The main symbol used in this banner is the electron distribution for tetrahedral hybrid orbitals, which represents the chemical activity of the elements and their compounds. Two segments of a crystal structure are included in the design, which are also the fl oor- plan shape of the science building. The shaft of pale yellow symbolizes the light of investigation. Yellow is the traditional color associated with science.
Classical Languages Department
While the lyre and the wolf may be taken individually as symbols of Greece and Rome, together they portray the unity of the two civilizations and its cultural achievement, the union of art and nature, and of poetry and myth. Horace has given this continuity and fusion of the two traditions of Greece and Rome its classical literary expression in his odes, of which none better, perhaps, than the “Integer vitae” ode conveys the intention of this banner.
Communication Arts and Sciences Department
Sound waves emanating from a central core symbolize communication through speech and drama. The reversal of the outward movement suggests feedback in communication. Silver gray is the color traditionally assigned to speech and drama.
Computer Science Department
The banner of the Computer Science Department features a Turing machine, the foundational model of digital computation. The zeroes and ones on its tape refl ect the binary logic by which digital computation is implemented. The changing colors and order of the numbers express the transition as data move from input through processing to output. The white shaft and its golden sheath symbolize the light and energy of education and the sciences. The fl owing wind symbolizes the transforming work of the Holy Spirit as it infuses the discipline of computing.

Economics and Business Department
Shapes and lines express the charting and planning of economic budgets. Subtly appearing among other symbols is a cross expressing the Christ-centered teaching of economics at Calvin College. Copper is the color associated with economics.
Education Department
The relationship of teacher and student in the educational process is represented by the forceful interaction of shapes in this design. The white shaft symbolizes the light of learning in the Holy Spirit. Blue is traditionally linked with education.
Engineering Department
The Engineering banner illustrates the key activity of engineers, namely, their involvement with the design process, an iterative, decision-making sequence.
Steps in the sequence, represented by circles and rectangles, are connected by arrows to indicate the movement from the initial problem statement to fi nal solution. Two-way arrows suggest the possibility of sequence reversal. Orange traditionally designates engineering.
English Department
The two main symbols, the lion and the eagle, represent England and the United
States of America. The lozenge pattern in the background expresses the pageantry of England during the development of the English language.
French Department
The banner of the Department of French features the Coq Gaulois, long a national emblem of France, and the Arch of Triumph, a symbol of French patriotism. The cock, traditionally the Christian symbol for watchfulness, has been adopted as its symbol by a nation which since its inception has been one of the important cradles of Christian thought and practice. The colors of the national fl ag are represented by the Coq Gaulois.
Geology, Geography, and Environmental Studies Department
Earthkeeping, the human community’s care for God’s earth, is symbolized in the representations of atmosphere, mountains, cities, water, and the various levels of the earth’s interior. The white shaft symbolizes the light and energy of learning stimulated by the Holy Spirit.
Germanic and Asian Languages and Literatures Department
The study of the Dutch and German languages is represented by symbols taken from emblems of the countries associated with these languages. The traditional black eagle represents Germany, and the orange lion is from the seal of the
Netherlands. The white shaft symbolizes the light of learning.
Health, Physical Education, Recreation, Dance, and Sport Department
Engaged in exercise, sports, and dance, a person in motion is suggested by the movement of rhythmical shapes and lines. Sage green is the color associated with physical fi tness.

History Department
Jagged horizontal bands, representing both the rise and fall of civilizations and the four kingdoms as described in the Book of Daniel, move across vertical time lines, which also symbolize the dramatic infl uence of Christ on history.
Library
The library as a gatherer, receptacle, and distributor of information, ideas, and learning is represented by the abstract book shape, while the white, fl owing shaft itself symbolizes the light and energy of learning in the Holy Spirit of God. The fl ame is the traditional symbol of learning and discovery through research.
Mathematics and Statistics Department
Mathematicians have always saved time and effort by substituting symbols for words.
The basic arithmetical steps of adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing are depicted on this banner by some of the earliest ways of writing them down.
The Renaissance calculator Tartaglia used the fi rst letter of the Italian word for plus to signify adding. Diophantus favored this minus sign in Greek times. Leibniz employed this multiplication symbol in seventeenth-century Germany. J. E. Gallimard used this reverse D for division in eighteenth-century France.
Music Department
The design of the Music banner emphasizes the rhythms of musical sounds. Shapes and lines suggest strings, valves, keys, horn bell, drum, and other musical forms.
Radiating circles suggest sound waves. The colors express the various moods of music.
Nursing Department
The traditional emblem of nursing, Florence Nightingale’s lamp, is featured in the banner for the Department of Nursing. The fl ame of the lamp symbolizes the light of Christian compassion and education. The gold of the lamp is the traditional color for science. The background apricot color is the academic regalia color for nursing, while the white shaft represents peace through the Holy Spirit.
Philosophy Department
Light refracted through a transparent prism symbolizes the many-faceted investigations of fact and of principles of reality and of human nature and conduct.
Physics and Astronomy Department
The construction of elements is symbolized in the Physics banner by the simplest atom, hydrogen, with its single proton and electron. Also included in the design are a tracing of the paths of particles from an atom and a segment of a crystal structure, which is also the fl oor-plan shape of the science building. The yellow shaft symbolizes the light of investigation.
Political
Science
Psychology
Spanish
Political Science Department
The banner of the Department of Political Science features a representation of the fasces, a symbol of the authority of the state, and arrows that express the direction and fl ow of the analytical and holistic nature of the process of law. The fasces, a bundle of rods bound about by an ax with projecting blade, was carried before ancient Roman magistrates as a symbol of authority. The white shaft of seven rods also symbolizes peace and enlightenment through the Holy Spirit.
Psychology Department
The Greek letter psi , the fi rst letter of the Greek word psyche (the mind), traditionally signifi es the discipline of psychology. The color red symbolizes emotion; blue, rationality; and white, peace through the Holy Spirit.
Religion Department
Three symbols of the Trinity—circle, cross, and dove—express the fullness of
God as He reveals Himself as Creator, Savior, and Counselor. These symbols are interlocked to depict the oneness of God. The shaft of white is the light of learning in Christian education guided by the Holy Spirit. Scarlet is traditionally associated with theology.
Sociology and Social Work Department
The central concept of sociology, represented by the inner circle, is a person interacting with other people to form groups. Total human society, represented by the broken circle, is composed of many small units forming a larger interrelated structure. All groups, from the family to society itself, exist within a framework of social norms. This normative or cultural framework, represented by the unbroken outer circle, promotes conformity, as suggested by the arrows directed from it toward the inner circles of society and the smaller group.
Spanish Department
The banner of the Spanish Department features the traditional symbols of the historical kingdoms of Castilla (castle), León (lion), and Aragón (red and yellow bars). These Christian kingdoms emerged during the eight-hundred-year-long reconquest of the Iberian Peninsula from domination by Muslim rulers. The separate kingdoms were joined through the marriage of Ferdinand and Isabella, and eventually coalesced into the modern nation of Spain.
