Cloutier McCann Principal T. Podobnik Vice-Principal D. Crook Head Secretary T. Lariviere Superintendent Of Schools M. Pascucci Trustee Wards 1&3 R. Chambers / C. van Broekhoven School Council Chairs Fr. P. Jones Pastor St. Dominic Church (905) 278-7762 My soul magnifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour, for he has looked with favour on the lowliness of his servant. Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed; for the Mighty One has done great things for me, and Holy is His name. His mercy is for those who fear Him from generation to generation. He has shown strength with His arm; he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts. He has brought down the powerful from their thrones, and lifted up the lowly; He has filled the hungry with good things, and sent the rich away empty. Luke 1, 46 - 53 ADMINISTRATORS’ MESSAGE During the month of May, spend some time talking to your children about our Blessed Mother. Pray the rosary together as a family. Saints have acclaimed its effectiveness and Popes have recognized it as a rich source of divine blessing. Catholic schools are Catholic communities. Catholic schools are faith communities. We parents, students, teachers, administrators, and support staff, walk and grow together in the faith which we received at our Baptism. And it is the ‘together’ that we grow. Our growth is primarily a relationship with God, who at our Baptism, called us by name. But the response of each of us to that growth is both personal and communal. We grow in our faith in the nurturing atmosphere of our Catholic community be that of our local parish, our home, or our Catholic school community. We would also like to say Happy Mother’s Day to all of our special mothers, grandmothers and aunts in our Community. We wish you a day filled with love, happiness and family. May God continue to bless all of our mothers. Together in Christ, M. Cloutier McCann T. Podobnik Our Shared Beliefs: CREATING CATHOLIC CONDITIONS FOR WELL-BEING, LEARNING AND LEADING We believe that we are called to create a Catholic learning and working environment that is safe, inclusive, and welcoming. SCHOOL HOURS Queen of Heaven School hours remain the same for the 2015-2016 school year. School Begins Recess (a.m.) Lunch Recess (p.m.) Dismissal 8:30 a.m. 10:35 - 10:50 a.m. 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. 1:55 - 2:10 p.m. 3:00 p.m. STUDENT ABSENCES As in the past, we ask that you call the school on the days that your child will be absent. This is a safety precaution that can save precious moments should there ever be an emergency situation. We thank you for your continued support in following this procedure. Upon reaching the school answering service please leave the following information: Date of absence Student's full name Grade level and teacher Reason for absence Date of return (905) 278-9771 Please continue to call each day that your child is absent. When your child returns to school, please provide the teacher with a note regarding the specific reason for the absence. ENTRY AND EXIT Teachers will be reviewing with their students which doors to enter and exit. Students are asked to use the assigned doors for their entry and exit and to proceed to the front of the school to meet their parents. We ask that parents who do not make use of the Kiss and Ride drop off, meet their children at the sidewalk areas located at the front of the school at the start and end of the day. Parents are not to be in the yard with the children. THE VIRTUE OF THE MONTH During the month of May we will focus on the virtue of Acceptance. One of the great wonders of the world we live in is that no two people are exactly alike. We may share biological families or national identity or cultural and ethnic identity, but we are all very unique and distinct creations. God breaks the mold every time! And that is a fantastic fact of life! It can also be a challenging fact of life if it makes us afraid. Sometimes differences are scary – especially if we haven’t learned about or don’t understand how people are different. The virtue of acceptance describes our ability to look at the attitudes and actions of those around us and then just stop and consider without judging them. The virtue of acceptance means that we look beyond what we see – a person’s skin colour, ethnic background, religion, age, gender, sexual orientation and see a person created and loved by God. As a loving Father, God teaches us to treat each other with dignity and respect. This is the way we build God’s kingdom here on earth. An accepting person … • is friendly and open to all God’s people, regardless of age, beliefs, gender, culture or ability • sees positive traits in others even when disagreeing with them • avoids judging or stereotyping others • understands that there may be more than one way to do things • sticks up for the “underdog” Let us pray this month for the grace and courage to be people of acceptance – to have the strength to trust that God is at work in everyone’s life despite any misgivings we may have. Our Shared Beliefs: BUILDING COLLABORATIVE PRACTICES THROUGH INQUIRY We believe that we are called to live and work in relationship within communities modelled after Christ. EMERGENCY PLAN EVACUATION THE ONTARIO CATHOLIC SCHOOL GRADUATE EXPECTATIONS In the unforeseen event that we should have an emergency at our school, we will evacuate to: St Paul Catholic Secondary School 815 Atwater Dr. 905.278.3994 Safety regulations and Board Policy require us to have this contingency plan in place. In the event of an evacuation to our alternate site, your child will remain at St. Paul Secondary School until we are able to contact you and make arrangements for pick up. VISITORS IN THE SCHOOL In order to insure the safety of students and staff, the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board requires ALL visitors (including parents, guardians, volunteers) to use the front doors located near the main office and report to the office upon entering the building. Anyone not wearing an identification sticker will be asked by staff to return to the office. This procedure helps students and staff in recognizing our many visitors at Queen of Heaven School. If you are picking up your child at school at a time other than regular dismissal, we ask that you report to the office to sign them out. Arrangements will be made for your child to be sent to the office. If you intend to send someone else to pick up your children, please write a note to the classroom teacher or inform the office. THE LUNCH TABLE Once again, a table has been placed in the foyer for lunches. Please ensure that your child’s name is on the lunch bag/ container. We are encouraging nutritious lunches. Classes are not to be interrupted for students to pick up lunches. Please let students know in the morning if they should expect to have a lunch dropped off. They should be responsible to come down and pick up their lunch. We cannot be responsible if a lunch goes missing. We stress that there are students with food allergies and therefore students are not to share food. Please check with your child’s teacher if you have any questions. MEDICAL ALERT – ANAPHYLACTIC REACTIONNUT ALLERGIES Please be aware that there are students in our school with a severe life-threatening food allergy (anaphylaxis) to NUTs and PEANUTs. This is a medical condition that causes a severe reaction to certain allergens and can result in death within minutes. Although this may or may not affect your child’s class directly, please send lunches and snacks to school with your children that are free from peanuts or nut products. We ask that you do not send in food products for the whole class to celebrate birthdays or social occasions. A donation of a book or game to the classroom is a safe alternative to food products and will be enjoyed so much longer by the children. Please feel free to contact your child’s teacher if you have any concerns or questions. We thank you for your co-operation and attention to this health watch. NO CHILD WITHOUT MEDIC ALERT PROGRAM The No Child Without program offers a free MedicAlert membership to students who attend our school and are between the ages of 4 to 14. SCHOOL AGENDAS As you know organizational skills are imperative in the success of a child in school. To assist in this process, school agendas have been given to the children in Grades 1-8. Your child is responsible to record their homework, upcoming projects/assignments, important dates, and teacher notices in their agenda. We are asking that you, as a parent, check your child’s agenda on a daily basis and initial it. The teachers will be reviewing the importance of the agenda with their students and we ask that parents take the time to go over it with their child(ren). NEWSLETTER DISTRIBUTION The school Newsletter is sent out via email to parents/guardians and is also posted on our website. HEALTHY EATING AND ECOSCHOOLS CHILD ILLNESS Please keep your child home if he/she is sick. We discourage children who have a fever, are coughing, vomiting or have a runny nose, from coming to school. They will recover from their illness quicker if they are resting at home. We promote Healthy Eating throughout the school year by encouraging our students to bring in healthy snacks and lunches. Students will be able to participate in activities in their classrooms and projects that encourage healthy eating. Our Shared Beliefs: KNOWING THE LEARNER THROUGH ASSESSMENT We believe that we are called to use fair, equitable and transparent assessment practices, informed by our Christ-centred approach to professional judgement, to create hope, engagement, and growth for all to realize their full potential. PEDICULOSIS Head Lice is a common problem which occurs at some time in most schools at least once every year. Head lice are parasites which have been common among human beings for centuries. They are not connected in any way with dirt or neglect. If a case is found in our schools, we shall inform parents of the students in that classroom in a letter. We have had a number of cases so we ask that you also check your own children regularly. If you find them to be infested, please notify the office. For more information check out FIRE DRILLS/LOCKDOWN We are required to conduct three fire drills in the fall and three in the spring. We are also required to practice two lock down drills during the year. Lock down drills involve students moving away from the classroom door to a location within the classroom away from windows. Lights are turned off and the doors are locked. These practices are to ensure that students and staff are prepared in case we should need to go into lock down. Lock down would be initiated by police and Board security personnel. REPORTING HEAD INJURIES http://www.peelregion.ca/health/topics/ headlice/. Even when it appears to be insignificant, we try to inform parents of all reported head injuries at school. We do this in recognition of the potential danger of any injury involving the head area. Our intent is not to alarm you, but to keep you informed. Please remind your child to let a staff member know if they bump their head or if they get hurt at school. UNITED WAY and SHARELIFE OUR CATHOLIC SCHOOL HERITAGE How was the corporation tax issue solved? In 1962, the Ontario Separate School Trustees’ Association presented Premier John Robarts a brief which outlined the probable bankruptcy of some separate school boards and the inferior salaries, teacher qualifications, school accommodation and programs compared with those of the public schools. The government began providing to the separate school boards grants which compensated for their lack of corporate assessment. Separate school boards were able to erect new schools and additions with gymnasiums, libraries, kindergarten rooms, and special education facilities. CATHOLIC EDUCATION WEEK 2016 Theme: Opening the Doors of Mercy / Ouvrir des portes de miséricorde JUBILEE YEAR OF MERCY officially proclaimed by Pope Francis, began on December 8, 2015 when the Holy Doors were opened at St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. “The Motto, ‘Merciful Like the Father’ serves as an invitation to follow the merciful example of the Father who asks us not to judge or condemn but to forgive and to give love and forgiveness without measure.” (Pope Francis) All staff has contributed to the United Way and ShareLife. The funds will allow staff to dress down on Fridays. We are very pleased to be participating in such a worthy cause. Our Shared Beliefs: RESPONDING THROUGH EFFECTIVE INSTRUCTION We believe that we are called to design and implement effective instruction that is Christ-centred, purposeful, engaging, inclusive, responsive, and which reflects success for all.
